BACKGROUND: Housing insecurity resulting from multiple, involuntary residential moves is detrimental to the health and wellbeing of families with children. Policy makers seeking to mitigate these negative effects require a measure of risk of housing insecurity. Here we present the development of a novel risk index for England. METHODS: We undertook a literature review to select drivers of housing insecurity and identify relevant metrics. We recruited a practitioner panel to rank and weight these metrics using a Likert survey. The weighted metrics were summed for each small area (Lower Super Ou

Emerging evidence suggests that psychosocial stress ages the immune system. Accordingly, immune aging may be an important potential mechanism linking psychosocial stress to aging-related decline and disease. Incarceration and housing insecurity represent severe and complex experiences of a multitude of psychosocial stressors, including discrimination, violence, and poverty. In this study, we investigated the association between incarceration and/or housing insecurity and advanced immune age in adults aged 55 and older. Our sample was derived from the Health and Retirement Survey (HRS), with n

INTRODUCTION: The rate of infectious syphilis continues to increase among females in British Columbia (BC) and Canada, raising concerns of increased incidence of congenital syphilis. We characterized syphilis cases among females in BC to identify opportunities to prevent syphilis and optimize its care.
METHODS: All cases of infectious syphilis diagnosed in BC between March 13, 2018 and December 31, 2020 and reported as female gender were reviewed. Demographics, risk factors and concurrent conditions were collected from a provincial surveillance system. Subgroup analyses comparing cases with a

BACKGROUND: Housing instability is a modifiable determinant of health outcomes among people with HIV. Reproductive-age women face unique challenges and are underrepresented in HIV research. We characterized housing status among reproductive-age women with and without HIV (WWH/WWoH) and evaluated its associations with health outcomes.
SETTING: The Study of Treatment and Reproductive Outcomes (STAR) examines women ages 18-45 years with and without HIV in 6 Southern US sites.
METHODS: We analyzed baseline data from March 2021-August 2023. We compared demographic, psychosocial, and clinical char

BACKGROUND: While pregnant women in treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) face considerable challenges, common material hardships- food insecurity and housing instability, known to negatively impact maternal-child health, have been inadequately researched within this population. This study describes food/housing hardships and evaluates associations with key psychosocial factors.
METHODS: A single-site prospective study, 100 3rd trimester women receiving prenatal care and medication-assisted treatment for OUD were interviewed, including screening for food/housing hardships, depressive sympto

Housing instability and drug misuse are two of the United States' most pressing challenges, each bearing profound health and societal consequences. A crucial yet largely underexplored question is the extent to which the opioid crisis has intensified housing instability. Our study ventures into this relatively uncharted nexus, investigating how the OxyContin reformulation, a pivotal moment in the U.S. opioid epidemic, impacted eviction rates. Employing a dose-response Difference-in-Differences model and analyzing eviction data from 2004 to 2016, we demonstrate that the OxyContin reformulation p

Latinxs are vulnerable to experiencing housing insecurity and less likely to receive public benefits, such as health insurance, which can impact a household's economic resources. We inform homelessness prevention by examining the association of social risks and healthcare access with housing insecurity for Latinxs. Our sample consisted of 120,362 participants under the age of 65, of which 17.3% were Latinx. Weighted chi-squared tests and logistic regression were used to examine predictors of housing insecurity. Housing insecurity was measured as worry about paying for housing. Latinxs were alm

People who use drugs are highly marginalized communities and are disproportionately affected by environmental changes-e.g., neighborhood gentrification-that affect housing availability and stability, particularly in urban locations. These changes could negatively affect individuals' access to and utilization of health care and social services, resulting in poorer health outcomes. This study examined the impact of gentrification and housing instability on drug users' access to harm reduction and other health services. Data were collected from 139 clients of a large harm reduction organization.

INTRODUCTION: Homelessness during pregnancy is a significant public health issue in the US that increases the risk of adverse maternal and infant mental and physical health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these risks through disruptions in health and social services, employment, and housing stability. Our study aimed to explore how early and cumulative adverse life experiences, mental health challenges, and the pandemic shaped the experience of homelessness during pregnancy.
METHODS: We used an action-oriented approach for this qualitative exploratory study. We conducted 20 in-de

Homelessness and intimate partner violence (IPV) do not impact all communities equally. Survivors from marginalized communities-that is communities that have been historically and structurally excluded from social, economic, and political resources-face additional challenges weathering IPV and housing crises. Understanding the housing experiences of marginalized survivors is necessary to achieve housing equity for all survivors. Community-based participatory research methods were utilized to convene 14 listening sessions (7 primary/7 validation) with Black and Latinx IPV survivors with interse

Objective: Despite increasing efforts to improve housing stability, research has largely defined housing stability in a narrow sense and heavily relied on objective measures, such as housing types and housing duration. The present study constructed a conceptual framework for a subjective housing stability definition from the perspectives of individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders and their behavioral health service providers. Methods: Following the principles of grounded theory, we collected and analyzed qualitative data through semistructured interviews with 24

Increased neighborhood flood risk predicts lower odds of households moving out of their neighborhood. This association is largest for renters, low-income homeowners, and Black homeowners. This pattern may reflect housing insecurity, which can manifest as both immobility and instability. Studies of climate and population should disaggregate by race and ethnicity, income, and housing tenure.

Housing instability is prevalent among intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors and a source of biopsychosocial stress among this population. Eviction policies play an important role in determining housing instability of IPV survivors. However, few studies have investigated whether state-level policies that prevent evictions lessen vulnerability to biopsychosocial stress among IPV survivors. This study examined the relationship between state eviction defense policy and indicators of biopsychosocial stress among 6577 IPV survivors. State-level data on IPV-related housing policies were from a c

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) risks persistent pain and long-term opioid use (LTO). The role of social determinants of health (SDoH) in LTO is not well established. We hypothesized that SDoH would be associated with postsurgical LTO after controlling for relevant demographic and clinical variables. This study utilized data from the Veterans Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program, VA Corporate Data Warehouse, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, including Veterans aged ≥ 65 who underwent elective TKA between 2013 and 2019 with no postsurgical complications or history of signifi

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with increased maternal morbidity and mortality, with racially minoritized women having worse outcomes than other women in the United States. However, there is little understanding of pandemic-specific stressors that may contribute to disparate outcomes. Thus, this analysis provides descriptive statistics of COVID-19 pandemic related factors among a sample of women who recently gave birth in the United States that can inform future public health disaster preparedness.

Former foster youth are at increased risk of housing instability and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) during the transitional period following foster care. We measured housing stability using sequence analysis and assessed whether a supportive housing program in New York, New York, was effective in improving housing stability and reducing STIs among former foster youth. Matched administrative records identified 895 former foster youth who were eligible for the housing program during 2007-2010. The main outcomes included housing stability (as determined from episodes of homelessness, inca

Research on the experiences of youth leaving foster care as they enter adulthood has identified their risk for homelessness and housing instability. Although this finding has been consistent, it has not received sufficient empirical or conceptual attention. In this article, we (a) review the recent findings on housing outcomes for former foster youth; (b) identify relevant theoretical frameworks to examine housing outcomes for these youth, with specific attention to the concept of housing career; (c) describe existing policy; and (d) propose further strategies for understanding and, therefore,

From March-June 2020, Rhode Island utilized a 209-room hotel as a quarantine/isolation (Q/I) facility for COVID-positive individuals experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to explore experiences of key stakeholders in designing and implementing the intervention. Four major themes emerged from the data analysis: 1) the isolative nature of Q/I housing tended to negatively affect residents' mental health, 2) the addition of medical oversight was a key positive development for the intervention, 3) the security presence involved in th

INTRODUCTION: Housing insecure veterans are aging, but the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) in the population is unknown.
METHODS: We calculated the prevalence of AD/ADRD diagnoses in 2018 among veterans that experienced homelessness, were at-risk for homelessness, or were stably housed. We determined acute care (emergency department, hospitalizations, psychiatric hospitalizations), and any long-term care (nursing home, and community-based) use by housing status among veterans with an AD/ADRD diagnosis.
RESULTS: The overall prevalence of AD/ADRD diagnoses for

A large body of literature shows the link between inadequate housing conditions and poor physical and mental health. The aim of this paper is to summarize the research on the impact of local housing policies on health inequalities, focusing on the issues of access to housing and fuel poverty as studied in the SOPHIE project. Our case studies in Spain showed that people facing housing insecurity, experienced intense levels of mental distress. We found that access to secure and adequate housing can improve the health of these populations, therefore, public policies that address housing instabili
