Domains of Housing Instability and Intimate Partner Violence Risk Among U.S. Tenants.

While IPV is often studied as a predictor of housing insecurity, few U.S. studies explore how different forms of housing instability may contribute to intimate partner violence (IPV) risk. Using a mixed-methods approach and a cross-sectional design, this study examined the association between four housing instability domains and IPV among a sample of tenants that had either experienced eviction or were at high risk for eviction. Tenants in Harris and Travis counties (Texas, USA) completed an online survey (n = 1085; March-July 2024). Housing instability was assessed across four domains: homele

Housing Risk Factors of Four Tropical Neglected Diseases: A Brief Review of the Recent Literature.

Alongside peace, education, food, income, a stable ecosystem, sustainable resources and social justice, shelter is a prerequisite for health. According to international human rights law, everyone is entitled to an adequate standard of living, which includes adequate housing. Adequate housing, including access to water and sanitation, plays a critical role in the prevention and management of neglected tropical diseases, which affect over 1 billion people worldwide. Inadequate housing conditions represent a risk factor for many of them, e.g., Chagas disease that affects 6-8 million people worldw

Exploring the Housing and Household Energy Pathways to Stress: A Mixed Methods Study.

Chronic stress, known to contribute to negative physical and mental health outcomes, is closely associated with broader issues of material hardship, poor neighborhood conditions, residential instability, and inadequate housing conditions. However, few studies have comprehensively explored pathways to stress in a low-income housing environment. A mixed-methods pilot study investigated the concept of energy insecurity by looking at the impacts of weatherization and energy efficiency interventions on low-income households in the South Bronx neighborhood of New York City. In-depth interviews were

Housing materials as predictors of under-five mortality in Nigeria: evidence from 2013 demographic and health survey.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria is among countries with high Under-Five Mortality (U5M) rates worldwide. Both maternal and childhood factors have been linked to U5M in the country. However, despite the growing global recognition of the association between housing and quality of life, the role of housing materials as predictors of U5M remain largely unexplored in Nigeria. This study, therefore, investigated the relationship between housing materials and U5M in Nigeria. METHODS: The study utilised the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey data. A representative sample of 40,680 households was selected

Solving the housing crisis in Nunavut, Canada.

In Canada, there are vast differences between the state of accommodation/housing, health, social inequalities, education and economic conditions for people in the northern and southern regions of the country. Overcrowding in Inuit Nunangat is a direct result of the promises made by past government policy that led to Inuit people settling in sedentary communities in the North on the understanding that they would be provided with social welfare. However, these welfare programmes proved to be either insufficient or non-existent for Inuit people. Therefore, Inuit are living in overcrowded homes in

Health-Related Social Needs Are Associated with Lower Self-Reported Quality of Life in Patients on Hemodialysis.

KEY POINTS: Health-related social needs are common in patients on in-center hemodialysis. All quality of life subscores are significantly lower in patients with at least one unmet health-related social needs. BACKGROUND: People on hemodialysis often report lower quality of life (QoL) compared with people not on hemodialysis. People with kidney disease have a high prevalence of health-related social needs (HRSN). The association of HRSN and QoL in people on hemodialysis remains understudied. Although some groups of patients treated with hemodialysis tend to have lower QoL, there exists minimal

Health-promoting housing policy in a changing climate: integrating affordability, security, and resilience.

Housing is a fundamental determinant of health, yet many housing systems fail to promote well-being or address growing challenges such as climate change, inequality, and urbanization. It is increasingly treated as an investment vehicle and as a commercial product supporting the construction industry, with substantial interactions with climate change, rather than its fundamental role providing shelter. This perspective addresses this gap by proposing an integrated framework for health-promoting housing policy that combines affordability, security, and quality, paying particular attention to the

Housing instability and mental health among renters in the michigan recession and recovery study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether housing instability-inclusive of eviction, homelessness, moving in with others, moving for cost reasons, or frequent moves-is associated with mental health among renters in the aftermath of the Great Recession of 2007-09. STUDY DESIGN: A panel survey study. METHODS: We used data from the Michigan Recession and Recovery Study (2009-10, 2011 and 2013), a population-representative sample of working-aged adults, and logistic regression with propensity score weights to examine the association between housing instability over a year and a half and anxiety attack or de

Substance use disorder service use and experiences among Veterans in permanent supportive housing.

BACKGROUND: Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are prevalent among homeless persons and affect housing stability. Little is known about SUD service use and experiences among Veterans housed through the Department of Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, which provides housing subsidies and supportive services. We aimed to examine SUD service use and treatment experiences among HUD-VASH Veterans with SUDs. METHODS: We analyzed VA Electronic Health Records of HUD-VASH Veterans with SUDs housed between 10/1/2017-9/30/2021 (n = 42,182). We examined sociodemographic a

Unseen struggles, unmet needs: A qualitative study of housing and health disparities among newly arrived migrants and refugees in Greater Western Sydney, Australia.

Housing is a fundamental social determinant of health and wellbeing for migrant and refugee populations and serves as a critical pathway through which health disparities emerge and persist over time. However, evidence on how housing disparities shape health outcomes among newly arrived migrants and refugees remains limited, particularly evidence attentive to how these experiences vary by visa and migration pathway. This qualitative study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the housing and health disparities faced by newly arrived migrants and refugees in Greater Western Sydney, Australi

How housing burden damages residents' health: evidence from Chinese cities.

BACKGROUND: Currently, China is steadily pursuing high-quality development and promoting common prosperity, for which residents' health is a precondition. However, high housing-price-to-income ratios and rent-to-income ratios have already triggered many social problems and have substantially affected people's work and life. It is of practical significance to examine the relationship between housing burden and residents' health. METHODS: Combining city-level housing price-to-income ratio data and residents' health data from the China Family Panel Studies, this study employs a binary logit mode

Older adults experiences of transitioning to housing following homelessness from a perspective of ontological security: A secondary analysis.

Older adults are increasingly becoming unhoused. Once homeless, older adults are forced to navigate the transition to housing, an area which requires further research. We conducted a secondary analysis of qualitative research data using the theory of ontological security to explore the question: How do older adults experience trauma across the transition to housing following homelessness? During the analysis, we created a central essence 'When your entire world is upended you have to learn to live in a new reality', with three underlying themes: 1) My life got "pulled out from under me" and I

The impact of the low-income housing tax credit on children's health and wellbeing in Georgia.

Housing instability is a risk factor for child abuse and neglect (CAN). Thus, policies that increase availability of affordable housing may reduce CAN rates. The Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program is the largest affordable housing policy initiative in the country. This study used fixed-effects models to estimate the relationship between LIHTC units and county-level CAN reports in Georgia from 2005 to 2015, controlling for county demographic characteristics. One-way fixed-effects models (including only county fixed-effects) demonstrated significant negative associations between numbe

Permanent supportive housing: addressing homelessness and health disparities?

Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is an intervention to address long-term homelessness. Evidence has resulted in a shift in US policy toward using PSH rather than shelters and transitional housing. Despite recognizing that individuals transitioning from homelessness to PSH experience a high burden of disease and health disparities, public health research has not considered whether and how PSH improves physical health outcomes. Based on diverse areas of research, we argue that in addition to improved access to quality health care, social determinants of health (including housing itself, neighb

Supporting Vulnerable People During Challenging Transitions: A Systematic Review of Critical Time Intervention.

Critical Time Intervention (CTI) is designed to reduce the risk of homelessness and other adverse outcomes by providing support to individuals during challenging life course transitions. While several narrative reviews suggest the benefit of CTI, the evidence on the model's effectiveness has not been systematically reviewed. This article systematically reviews studies of CTI applied to a variety of populations and transition types. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis for protocols (PRISMA-P) guidelines, we reviewed 13 eligible experimental and quasi-

A longitudinal analysis of peer-delivered permanent supportive housing: Impact of housing on mental and overall health in an ethnically diverse population.

Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is an evidence-based health intervention for persons experiencing homelessness, but the impact of individual mechanisms within this intervention on health requires further research. This study examines the longitudinal impact of the mechanism of supportive housing within a peer-delivered PSH model on overall health and mental health (as measured by psychological distress and self-report of bothersome symptoms) outcomes in an ethnically diverse population. The 237 participants in the study included persons who were homeless or at risk of homelessness and who a
