Culturally appropriate, human rights compliant police custody monitoring expectations for detained Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

To support effective implementation of the United Nations Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT) in Australia, Culturally appropriate, human rights compliant police custody monitoring expectations for detained Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people have been developed. It is anticipated that these Expectations (standards) will have relevance to other jurisdictions with overrepresentation of Indigenous (or other marginalised/racialised groups) in their domestic criminal legal system. The Expectations can

Dignity in mental health care in East Africa: A critical synthesis of human rights, autonomy, participation, and equity.

BACKGROUND: Dignity is central to ethical, person-centred, and rights-based mental health care, yet evidence from East Africa remains fragmented. This review synthesised evidence on dignity and related dimensions of mental health care. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, African Journals Online, and Google Scholar were searched for studies published between 2010 and 2025. Eligible studies examined mental health services in East Africa and dignity or related constructs. Comparative evidence from Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, and Malawi was also considered.

Ensuring equitable access to cancer medicine and care in Australia: A human-rights lens, including people experiencing homelessness.

UNLABELLED: Australia has strong cancer survival. Yet many people still struggle to get timely diagnosis, medicines, and supportive care. Gaps are widest for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, rural and remote communities, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, people with disability, temporary visa holders, and people experiencing homelessness. OBJECTIVE: To set out practical, rights-aligned actions that turn universal coverage into universal access. APPROACH: This short communication applies a rights-based analytic framing, distinct from a checklist, to reinterpret polic

Is Virtually Everything Possible? The Relevance of Ethics and Human Rights for Introducing Extended Reality in Forensic Psychiatry.

Extended Reality (XR) systems, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), provide a digital simulation either of a complete environment, or of particular objects within the real world. Today, XR is used in a wide variety of settings, including gaming, design, engineering, and the military. In addition, XR has been introduced into psychology, cognitive sciences and biomedicine for both basic research as well as diagnosing or treating neurological and psychiatric disorders. In the context of XR, the simulated 'reality' can be controlled and people may safely learn to cope with thei

When a virus (Covid-19) attacks human rights: The situation of asylum seekers in the medico-legal setting.

The Covid-19 pandemic is a global health emergency that requires immediate, effective action by governments to protect the health and basic human rights of everyone's life. Refugees and migrants are potentially at increased risk because they typically live in overcrowded conditions often without access to basic sanitation. Since the beginning of the official lockdown for Covid-19, the medico-legal assessment of physical violence related to obtaining status or other forms of human protection has been frozen.

The Stakeholder Model of voice research: Acknowledging barriers to human rights of all stakeholders in a communicative exchange.

The act of communication is a complex, transient and often abstract phenomenon that involves many stakeholders, each of whom has their own perspective: the speaker, the listener, the observer and the researcher. Current research practices in voice disorder are frequently framed through a single lens - that of the researcher/clinician or their participant/patient. This single lens approach risks overlooking significant barriers to the basic human right of freedom of expression for those with a voice disorder as it omits consideration of the impact of voice disorder on the listener, and consider

Restoring a reputation: invoking the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights to bear on pharmaceutical pricing.

In public health, the issue of pharmaceutical pricing is a perennial problem. Recent high-profile examples, such as the September 2015 debacle involving Martin Shkreli and Turing Pharmaceuticals, are indicative of larger, systemic difficulties that plague the pharmaceutical industry in regards to drug pricing and the impact it yields on their reputation in the eyes of the public. For public health ethics, the issue of pharmaceutical pricing is rather crucial. Simply, individuals within a population require pharmaceuticals for disease prevention and management. In order to be effective, these p

Chiari anomalies in the human right atrium.

Chiari anomalies in the human right atrium ostensibly are encountered rarely. There is only sporadic mention in the literature of these fenestrated, net-like valves of the inferior vena cava, coronary sinus, or various strands connecting these with other right atrial structures. The effects of such structural anomalies on heart function are unknown. We report here gross observations of the right atrial net from among 213 cadavers, 38 autopsied, and 11 fetal hearts. Histological and ultrastructural examination of inferior vena cava and coronary sinus valves demonstrated that only the anomalous

Personal relevance and the human right hemisphere.

Brain damage can selectively disrupt or distort information and ability across the range of human behaviors. One domain that has not been considered as an independent attribute consists of acquisition and maintenance of personal relevant entities such as "familiar" faces, persons, voices, names, linguistic expressions, handwriting, topography, and so on. In experimental studies of normal mentation, personal relevance is revealed in studies of emotion, arousal, affect, preference and familiarity judgments, and memory. Following focal brain damage, deficits and distortions in the experience of p

Gender Identity: The Human Right of Depathologization.

Background: Transgender people have a gender identity different from the one allocated to them at birth. In many countries, transsexualism and transgenderism are considered mental illnesses under the diagnosis of gender dysphoria. This pathologization impacts on human rights. Maincontent: The United Nations (UN) has denounced violations against trans-people, including attacks, forced medical treatments, lack of legal gender recognition, and discrimination in the areas of education, employment, access to healthcare, and justice. The UN has linked these violations directly with discriminatory di

Knowledge and exercise of human rights, and barriers and facilitators to claiming rights: a cross-sectional study of female sex workers and high-risk men who have sex with men in Andhra Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: HIV prevention interventions recognize the need to protect the rights of key populations and support them to claim their rights as a vulnerability reduction strategy. This study explores knowledge of human rights, and barriers and facilitators to claiming rights, among female sex workers (FSWs) and high-risk men who have sex with men (HR-MSM) who are beneficiaries of a community mobilization intervention in Andhra Pradesh, India. METHODS: Data are drawn from a cross-sectional survey (2014) among 2400 FSWs and 1200 HR-MSM. Human rights awareness was assessed by asking respondents i

Human Rights Accountability in Global Health Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships: The Case of the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development promotes multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) to achieve sustainable development, including global health-related goals. MSPs typically involve three or more types of actors, including states, corporations, philanthropic organizations, civil society, and multilateral institutions. While MSPs often operate in sectors that are crucial for the realization of health-related rights, they are seldom analyzed through a human rights lens. This paper will advance knowledge in this field through an exploration of the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-

Building Trust through Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination: A Platform to Address Social Exclusion and Human Rights in the Dominican Republic.

Hispaniola, the Caribbean island that includes the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic (DR), accounts for 90% of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in the Americas. Both countries have committed to LF elimination by 2020. In the DR, LF occurs mainly in bateyes, or company towns that historically hosted migrant laborers from Haiti. A legacy of anti-Haitian discrimination as well as the 2013 Sentencia, which stripped generations of Haitian-descended Dominicans of their citizenship, ensure that this population remains legally, economically, and socially marginalized. Despite this context, the co

Detention of People Lost to Follow-Up on TB Treatment in Kenya: The Need for Human Rights-Based Alternatives.

Adherence to treatment is a key element for global TB control. Public health laws can be used to enforce isolation, adherence, and completion of TB treatment. However, the practical application of public health laws can potentially range from voluntary measures to involuntary detention approaches. This paper explores the potential risks and impacts of using detention approaches to enforce TB treatment adherence. In August 2015, we conducted a literature search regarding the application of public health laws to enforce adherence to TB treatment globally, and specifically in Kenya. Texts were an

Imprisoned and imperiled: access to HIV and TB prevention and treatment, and denial of human rights, in Zambian prisons.

BACKGROUND: Although HIV and tuberculosis (TB) prevalence are high in prisons throughout sub-Saharan Africa, little research has been conducted on factors related to prevention, testing and treatment services. METHODS: To better understand the relationship between prison conditions, the criminal justice system, and HIV and TB in Zambian prisons, we conducted a mixed-method study, including: facility assessments and in-depth interviews with 246 prisoners and 30 prison officers at six Zambian prisons; a review of Zambian legislation and policy governing prisons and the criminal justice system;
