Viral etiology of sporadic cases of parotitis among children in Korea during 2013-2014.

Recent years have seen a high incidence of mumps, which is generally diagnosed based on clinical features, especially parotitis, without laboratory confirmation in Korea. To better understand the epidemiology of mumps in Korean children, we investigated sporadic suspected mumps cases with parotitis. In total, 237 buccal swabs or throat swabs collected from children with parotitis who had been clinically diagnosed with mumps were tested using real-time PCR for the detection of six viruses (Epstein-Barr virus, Human herpesvirus 6, Mumps virus, Human parainfluenza virus-1, -2, -3, Human adenoviru

A novel bocavirus associated with acute gastroenteritis in Australian children.

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a common illness affecting all age groups worldwide, causing an estimated three million deaths annually. Viruses such as rotavirus, adenovirus, and caliciviruses are a major cause of AGE, but in many patients a causal agent cannot be found despite extensive diagnostic testing. Proposing that novel viruses are the reason for this diagnostic gap, we used molecular screening to investigate a cluster of undiagnosed cases that were part of a larger case control study into the etiology of pediatric AGE. Degenerate oligonucleotide primed (DOP) PCR was used to non-specif

Prevalence of Eleven Infectious Viruses Causing Diarrhea in Korea.

Rotavirus and norovirus are well-known causes of viral infectious diarrhea. There are few reports on diarrhea caused by other viruses in Korea, although cases of gastroenteritis attributable to other viruses are increasing worldwide. The aims of this study were to detect various causes of viral diarrhea and to investigate their prevalence. A total of 801 fecal specimens submitted to a clinical microbiology laboratory for the detection of diarrheal viruses were included. We sought to detect rotavirus A/B/C, adenovirus, astrovirus, norovirus GI/GII, sapovirus, Aichi virus, human parechovirus, en

Emerging viruses in transplantation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Several viruses have recently gained importance for the transplant recipient. The purpose of this review is to give an update on emerging viruses in transplantation. RECENT FINDINGS: BK virus-associated nephropathy (BKVAN) causes graft loss after kidney transplantation. Immunosuppression lowering strategies have now been shown to have benefit in decreasing the incidence of BKVAN. Guidelines for screening, prevention, and therapy have also been developed. Another polyomavirus, JC virus, is a cause of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and has also gained prominence d

Insights into the panorama of multiple DNA viruses in municipal wastewater and recycled sludge in Tianjin, China.

Environmental viruses in wastewater and sludge are widely recognized for their roles in waterborne diseases. However, previous studies mainly focused on RNA viruses, and little is known about the diversity of DNA viral communities and their driving factors in municipal wastewater treatment environments. Herein, we conducted a pilot study to explore DNA virus profiles in municipal wastewater and recycled sludge by metagenomics method, and track their temporal changes in northern China. Results showed that 467 viral species were co-shared among all the samples. We identified six families of huma

Beyond Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Rhinovirus in the Pathogenesis and Exacerbation of Asthma: The Role of Metapneumovirus, Bocavirus and Influenza Virus.

Respiratory viruses other than rhinovirus or respiratory syncytial virus, including human metapneumovirus, influenza virus, and human bocavirus, are important pathogens in acute wheezing illness and asthma exacerbations in young children. Whether infection with these viruses in early life is associated with recurrent wheezing and/or asthma is not fully investigated, although there are data to suggest children with human metapneumovirus lower respiratory tract infection may have a higher likelihood of subsequent and recurrent wheezing several years after initial infection.

Detection of bocavirus in children suffering from acute respiratory tract infections in Saudi Arabia.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) was recently discovered in children with respiratory distress and/or diarrhea. To our knowledge, no previous study has reported the existence of bocavirus in Saudi Arabia. Swabs samples from 80 children with respiratory tract infections were examined for the presence of HBoV. Real-time polymerase chain reaction was used as a sensitive method to detect the HBoV. Direct gene sequencing was used to determine the genotype of the detected virus isolates. HBoV was detected in 22.5% of the examined patients. The NP1 partial gene sequence from all patients showed that the circul

Detection of bocavirus DNA in nasopharyngeal aspirates of a child with bronchiolitis.

We describe a case of bronchiolitis associated with the newly detected human bocavirus (hBoV) in a child with a suspected Noonan syndrome. This is the first report of a bronchiolitis probably linked to hBoV that required intensive care while being accompanied by a congenital heart disease and a history of several episodes of severe respiratory symptoms.

Metagenomic sequencing identifies potential respiratory pathogens in PCR-negative subset of surveillance samples.

Respiratory pathogens are a significant source of global morbidity, mortality, and economic burden, with the COVID-19 pandemic driving increased interest in and funding for respiratory disease surveillance. Syndromic panel multiplex nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) such as the BioFire Respiratory Panel (RP) are designed to identify the most common etiologic agents of respiratory illness. Untargeted metagenomic sequencing is a powerful tool for pathogen-agnostic detection, enabling the recovery of complete genomes for genomic epidemiology and variant tracking. In this study, we performe

Presence and Significance of Multiple Respiratory Viral Infections in Children Admitted to a Tertiary Pediatric Hospital in Italy.

Viral co-infections are frequently observed among children, but whether specific viral interactions enhance or diminish the severity of respiratory disease is still controversial. This study aimed to investigate the type of viral mono- and co-infections by also evaluating viral correlations in 3525 respiratory samples from 3525 pediatric in/outpatients screened by the Allplex Respiratory Panel Assays and with a Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-COronaVirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) test available. Overall, viral co-infections were detected in 37.8% of patients and were more frequently observed in specime

Prevalence of human metapneumovirus in children with acute lower respiratory infection in Changsha, China.

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) causes acute respiratory infections in children. The prevalence and clinical characteristics of hMPV were determined in nasopharyngeal aspirates of children in Changsha, China. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or PCR was employed to screen for both hMPV and other common respiratory viruses in 1,165 nasopharyngeal aspirate specimens collected from children with lower respiratory tract infections from September 2007 to August 2008. All PCR products were sequenced, and demographic and clinical data were collected from all patients. Seventy-six

Beyond respiratory syncytial virus and rhinovirus: The other viral respiratory bandits.

Asthma affects approximately 25 million people in the United States, with respiratory viruses playing a significant role in both the onset and exacerbations of the condition. Although rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are the most well-known triggers, other iratory viruses playing a significant role in both the on, human parainfluenza virus, human bocavirus, enterovirus D68, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2 are increasingly recognized for their significant impact on asthma. These viruses contribute to both the development of asthma and exacerbations by inducing airway inflammation, dis

High prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A virus (H1N1) coinfection in dead patients in Northeastern Iran.

In the last months of 2019, an outbreak of fatal respiratory disease started in Wuhan, China, and quickly spread to other parts of the world. It was named COVID-19, and to date, thousands of cases of infection and death are reported worldwide. This disease is associated with a wide range of symptoms, which makes accurate diagnosis of it difficult. During previous severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) pandemic in 2003, researchers found that the patients with fever, cough, or sore throat had a 5% influenza virus-positive rate. This finding made us think that the wide range of symptoms and al

Clinical characteristics and risk factors of severe bocavirus-positive pneumonia in children and a literature review.

Increasing evidence suggests that human bocavirus (HBoV) is associated with respiratory symptoms in the absence of other identifiable pathogens and may even precipitate severe lower respiratory tract infections. However, only a few studies of severe human bocavirus infections in pediatric patients have been reported. The aim of the current study was to collect and analyze clinical data from children diagnosed with mild pneumonia and severe pneumonia, with an emphasis on those testing positive for HBoV from June 2009 to June 2019. Among the 799 HBoV-positive children included in the study, appr
