Attenuation of polychlorinated biphenyl sorption to charcoal by humic acids.

Strong sorption to black carbon may limit the environmental risks of organic pollutants, but interactions with cosorbing humic acid (HA) may interfere. We studied the attenuative effect of HA additions on the sorption of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to a charcoal. "Intrinsic" sorption to HA-amended charcoal was calculated by subtracting the sorption contribution of HA from the total sorption to charcoal and HA. Association of PCBs with HA was proportional to hydrophobicity. However, the planar PCBs 77 and 126 had an additional 2-4 times stronger association than expected from hydrophobicit

Kinetically inert Cu in coastal waters.

Many studies have shown that Cu and other metals in natural waters are mostly bound by unidentified compounds interpreted to be strong ligands reversibly complexing a given metal. However, commonly applied analytical techniques are not capable of distinguishing strongly but reversibly complexed metal from metal bound in kinetically inert compounds. In this work, we use a modified competitive ligand exchange adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry method combined with size fractionation to show that most if not all of the apparently very strongly (log K > or = 13) bound Cu in samples from fiv

Biodegradation of poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/poly (lactic acid) under food waste composting: CO2 emissions and compost maturity characteristics.

Substituting conventional plastics with biodegradable plastics represents a promising mitigation strategy for plastic pollution. However, the non-degraded bioplastics can partially result in a heterogeneous, diffusion-limited, and metabolically suppressed state in the compost, thus leading to the composting unstability. This study employed three levels of additions (2, 8 and 16%) of poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/poly (lactic acid) (PBAT/PLA) bioplastics to canteen food waste to investigate the impact of biodegradable plastics addition on bioplastic degradation efficiency and compost

Changes in anaerobic digestion performance and microbial community by increasing SRT through sludge recycling in food waste leachate treatment.

This study investigates the effects of sludge recycling on anaerobic digestion (AD) performance and microbial community dynamics during food waste leachate treatment. Three reactors with varying solid retention times (SRTs) were operated: a control without sludge recycling (SRT = 20 days) and two experimental setups with SRTs of 40 and 80 days achieved through sludge return. Increasing SRT improved methane production and volatile solids reduction compared to the control, with reductions of 81.0-90.2% at the highest SRT. However, extended SRTs resulted in the accumulation of recalcitrant compou

Characteristics and phytotoxicity of hydrochar-derived dissolved organic matter: Effects of feedstock type and hydrothermal temperature.

The dissolved organic matter (DOM) with high mobility and reactivity plays a crucial role in soil. In this study, the characteristics and phytotoxicity of DOM released from the hydrochars prepared from different feedstocks (cow manure, corn stalk and Myriophyllum aquaticum) under three hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) temperatures (180, 200 and 220°C) were evaluated. The results showed that the hydrochars had high dissolved organic carbon content (20.15 to 37.65 mg/g) and its content showed a gradual reduction as HTC temperature increased. Three fluorescent components including mixed substance

Characterization of Dissolved Organic Matter Released from Aged Biochar: A Comparative Study of Two Feedstocks and Multiple Aging Approaches.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays important roles in environmental ecosystems. While many studies have explored the characteristics of aged biochar, limited information is available about the properties of DOM derived from aged biochar. In this study, biochar obtained from maize stalk and soybean straw were aged using farmland or vegetable-soil solution, as well as soil solution containing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Chemical composition of the extracted DOM from the aged biochar was analyzed via excitation-emission matrix coupled with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) and parallel fact

Pore size-matched adsorption of organic pollutants and its pilot application in advanced wastewater treatment.

Activated carbon adsorption is a key technology for advanced wastewater treatment, yet the mechanisms governing the removal of macromolecular organics, such as humic substances, remain unclear under long-term full-scale operation. To elucidate the structure-performance relationship governing large molecule adsorption, we proposed a pore size-matching strategy by systematically investigating humic substance adsorption on activated carbons with varying pore structures. Results show that mesopore volume and average pore diameter, rather than specific surface area or iodine number, are the primary

Role of membrane fouling substances on the rejection of N-nitrosamines by reverse osmosis.

The impact of fouling substances on the rejection of four N-nitrosamines by a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane was evaluated by characterizing individual organic fractions in a secondary wastewater effluent and deploying a novel high-performance liquid chromatography-photochemical reaction-chemiluminescence (HPLC-PR-CL) analytical technique. The HPLC-PR-CL analytical technique allowed for a systematic examination of the correlation between the fouling level and the permeation of N-nitrosamines in the secondary wastewater effluent and synthetic wastewaters through an RO membrane. Membrane fouling

Revealing the impact of pyrolysis temperature on dissolved organic matter released from the biochar prepared from Typha orientalis.

Biochars derived from wetland biomass have been extensively applied in water and wastewater treatments. This study investigated the quantity and chemical quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from the biochar prepared from the typical wetland plant (Typha orientalis) at different pyrolysis temperatures (300-700 °C) by using fluorescence excitation-emission (EEM) spectrophotometry with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The results showed that the content of DOM released from biochars at low pyrolysis temperatures (300-500 °C) was higher than that obser

Isolation of high molecular weight and humic acid-free metagenomic DNA from lignocellulose-rich samples compatible for direct fosmid cloning.

Activity-based screening of metagenomic DNA libraries is a promising approach to fish out genes encoding novel bioactive compounds/enzymes of industrial importance. The starting point of such functional screening in fosmid vectors is isolation of high molecular weight (HMW) DNA of sufficient purity from diverse environments. Metagenomic DNA isolation protocols mostly employ mechanical cell lysis that yields fragmented DNA. Those established for HMW DNA using enzymatic lysis have not considered samples with high lignocellulose or humic acid content. Enzymes from such environments are in great d

Improving qPCR efficiency in environmental samples by selective removal of humic acids with DAX-8.

Quantitative PCR is becoming the method of choice for the detection of pathogenic microorganisms and other targets in the environment. A major obstacle when amplifying DNA is the presence of inhibiting substances like humic acids that decrease the efficiency of PCR. We combined the polymeric adsorbent Supelite™ DAX-8 with a large-volume (10 mL) nucleic acid extraction method to decrease the humic acid content prior to qPCR quantification in water samples. The method was tested by spiking with humic acid standards and the bacterial surrogate Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1. Improvements in qPCR detec

Response of anammox to organics with different degradation characteristics and exposure time: Performance, sludge characteristics and bacterial community.

The effects of typical organic compounds including easily degradable organic matters sodium acetate, yeast and methanol, and refractory organic matter (ROM) humic acid on anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) systems in short-term and medium-term exposure time were studied. During short-term experiments, nitrogen removal activity (NRA) was inhibited at sodium acetate level of 150 mg L-1 total organic carbon (TOC) and methanol level of 30-150 mg L-1 TOC, but humic acid and yeast (≤150 mg L-1 TOC) enhanced nitrogen removal in anammox systems. The greatest NRA of 30.10 mg TN g-1 VSS h-1 was reco

Sorptive stabilization and fractionation of dissolved organic matter by Al and Fe oxyhydroxide-rich water treatment residuals.

Sorption of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by mineral oxides is a key process for preserving organic matter (OM) against rapid microbial degradation and leaching. While this mechanism is well studied in natural soils, the use of water treatment residuals (WTRs) rich in metal oxyhydroxides remains underexplored. This study investigated the potential of aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) WTRs to stabilize DOC in batch sorption experiments. DOC, derived from anaerobically digested sludge, was added at concentrations of 0 - 120 ppm. Sorption capacity was assessed using distribution coefficient (Kd) deriv

Characteristics of extracellular organic matters and the formation potential of disinfection by-products during the growth phases of M. aeruginosa and Synedra sp.

Extracellular organic matter (EOM) is an important precursor of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Nowadays, little is known about changes in molecular weight (MW) and hydrophilic (HPI)/hydrophobic (HPO) fractions of EOM during the entire algal growth phase. In this study, a combined approach of fractionation procedure and parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis was applied to characterize the EOM during the entire growth phase of two algal species (M. aeruginosa and Synedra sp.), and investigated the relationships between fluorescent component and the DBP formation potential (FP) in MW and HPI/HPO f

Metal complexation properties of freshwater dissolved organic matter are explained by its aromaticity and by anthropogenic ligands.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters affects the fate and environmental effects of trace metals. We measured variability in the Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn affinity of 23 DOM samples isolated by reverse osmosis from freshwaters in natural, agricultural, and urban areas. Affinities at uniform pH and ionic composition were assayed at low, environmentally relevant free Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn activities. The C-normalized metal binding of DOM varied 4-fold (Cu) or about 10-fold (Cd, Ni, Zn) among samples. The dissolved organic carbon concentration ranged only 9-fold in the waters, illustrating that

Heavy metals trigger distinct molecular transformations in microplastic-versus natural-derived dissolved organic matter.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a key determinant of heavy metal fate in aquatic environments, influencing their mobility, toxicity, and bioavailability. Derived from natural sources such as soil and vegetation decomposition, natural DOM (N-DOM) typically features humic-like substances with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups that stabilize heavy metals through complexation. However, microplastic-derived DOM (MP-DOM), increasingly prevalent due to plastic degradation, may interact differently with heavy metals, potentially exacerbating environmental risks amid rising plastic polluti

Application potential of biochar in environment: Insight from degradation of biochar-derived DOM and complexation of DOM with heavy metals.

Biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important for determining the application potential of biochar in soil remediation. However, little is known about the degradation behavior of biochar-derived DOM and its interaction with heavy metals. Here, incubation experiments combined with quenching titration experiments, which analyzed by spectroscopic technology and chemometric method, were conducted to reveal such behaviors and mechanisms. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra showed that high aromatic and hydrophobic fractions were enriched in biochar-derived DOM and enhanced during the

Enhancing crop resilience by harnessing the synergistic effects of biostimulants against abiotic stress.

Plants experience constant exposed to diverse abiotic stresses throughout their growth and development stages. Given the burgeoning world population, abiotic stresses pose significant challenges to food and nutritional security. These stresses are complex and influenced by both genetic networks and environmental factors, often resulting in significant crop losses, which can reach as high as fifty percent. To mitigate the effects of abiotic stresses on crops, various strategies rooted in crop improvement and genomics are being explored. In particular, the utilization of biostimulants, including

[The effect of a soil extract on the development of Bacillus thuringiensis and on its synthesis of an insecticidal endotoxin].

Selection of effective and inexpensive nutrient medium for cultivation of entomopathogenic bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis was carried out. The medium with molasses [correction of patoka], corn extract and mineral salts has been chosen. Addition of a soil extract to the medium enhanced growth of microorganisms, increased the rate of culture development, the yield of spore-crystalline material and quantity of synthesized endotoxin. Apparently the strengthening effect belongs to humic substances contained in the soil extract.

Membrane-covered composting systems with microbial inoculation enhance humification by shifting regulation toward microbially mediated transformation.

Membrane-covered composting systems have been increasingly used to enhance humification, yet the microbial-metabolic mechanisms of humic substance (HS) transformation under inoculated conditions remain unclear. This study compared membrane-covered and uncovered composting systems under identical microbial inoculation conditions by integrating excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM-PARAFAC), untargeted metabolomics, and high-throughput microbial community profiling. Under microbial inoculation conditions, membrane covering increased humic-like components by 7.8% while reducin
