The effect of temperature and humidity on dengue virus propagation in Aedes aegypti mosquitos.

The effect of temperature and relative humidity on dengue virus propagation in the mosquito as one of the possible contributing factors to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) outbreaks was studied. Ae. aegypti mosquitos were reared under standard conditions and inoculated intrathoracically with dengue virus. Virus propagation in the mosquitos was determined at the temperature and relative humidity of all 3 seasons of Yangon and for the simulated temperature and relative humidity of Singapore. The virus propagation was detected by direct fluorescent antibody technique (DFAT) with mosquito head squas

Effects of heat and humidity on the responses of exercising asthmatics to sulfur dioxide exposure.

Twenty-two asthmatic young adult volunteers, predetermined to be reactive to sulfur dioxide (SO2) with exercise at normal room temperature, were studied to document short-term effects of SO2 exposure under hot conditions, both humid and dry. For comparison, similar exposures were conducted at mild temperatures. All subjects were exposed in an environmental control chamber to all possible combinations of 2 atmospheric conditions (purified air and 0.6 ppm SO2), 2 temperatures (near 21 and 38 degrees C), and 2 levels of relative humidity (near 20 and 80%). Exposures involved 5 min of heavy exerci

[Work in a humid environment as a conditioning factor in the genesis of occupation-induced dermatoses].

In a prospective study undertaken from 1980-1983 the risk of developing occupational eczemas among apprentices usually working in a wet environment was analysed. Investigations involving 305 volunteers from technical colleges revealed a marked increase of dermatoses in subjects occupationally exposed to wet conditions. The influence of water and detergents on the barrier function of the horny layer of the epidermis is discussed.

Hierarchically Engineered MXene/CMC-Na Composites with Acetaminophen Modification for Self-Powered Humidity Sensing.

Humidity sensors have demonstrated significant potential for applications in wearable electronics, physiological monitoring, and environmental sensing. However, the practical implementation of humidity sensors is often limited by reliance on external power sources, making the development of self-powered humidity sensing systems a considerable challenge. This work presents a hierarchical multi-step modification strategy to fabricate an acetaminophen (AP)-modified hydroxylated MXene/carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC-Na) hybrid gel ink (AHMC) with integrated humidity sensing and self-powered fun

Confined nanopores and hydrogen bonds of polyoxometalates for continuous electricity generation from fluctuating humidity.

Environmental humidity power generation technology is an important strategy to reduce the use of fossil fuels and solve the energy crisis. However, it remains a challenge to maintain a water adsorption gradient for the long-term output of continuous electrical energy when environmental humidity fluctuates. Herein, porous polyoxometalate (POM) nanomaterial [CuII(2,2'-bipy)(H2O)2Cl] n [CuII-(2,2'-bipy)(H2O)2Al(OH)6Mo6O18] n (Cu-CuAlMo6) was used to assemble thin-film devices, which achieved continuous power generation in fluctuating humidity. The device generated stable electrical output (0.203

Interfacial Charge-Transfer Engineering in Borophene-MWCNT Heterostructures for Multifunctional Humidity and Physiological Sensing.

Humidity sensing is essential in medical fields such as respiratory support, neonatal care, sterilization, and pharmaceutical storage. However, current sensors face limitations, including slow response/recovery, low sensitivity, and poor long-term stability. To address these challenges, we developed borophene-multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) heterostructures using a stepwise in situ thermal decomposition method. The resulting humidity sensor exhibits an ultrabroad detection range (11-97% RH), ultra-high sensitivity (55,000% at 97% RH), and fast response/recovery times (10.04 s/4.8 s). Throu

Humidity-Resistant Hydrogen Sulfide Sensor Based on Dense Tangled Gel Armor in Dynamic Environments.

Accurate detection of hydrogen sulfide in high-humidity environments is critical for applications ranging from oral pathology via breath analysis to industrial safety monitoring. However, conventional sensors suffer severe signal drift and electrode degradation under humidity above 90%, impeding reliable operation in real-world scenarios. Here, we present a self-powered, humidity-resistant sensor using a primary battery architecture coupled with a densely tangled hydrogel electrolyte. The sensing principle relies on non-faradaic adsorption-induced modulation of the Ag electrode potential. By p

Humidity-dependent benzene adsorption in indoor environments: The critical transition between competition and cooperation.

Benzene, a prevalent indoor air pollutant, poses significant health risks. While carbonaceous materials are widely used for benzene removal, their performance under humid conditions remains controversial, with reports showing both detrimental and beneficial effects of moisture. The underlying mechanisms governing these seemingly contradictory observations remain poorly understood, impeding the rational design of adsorbents that can maintain consistent performance across varying humidity levels. To address this knowledge gap, we combined molecular simulations with experimental measurements to i

A Wearable AI-Driven Mask with Humidity-Sensing Respiratory Microphone for Non-Vocal Communication.

Hoarseness and dysphonia caused by vocal cord conditions or laryngeal surgeries significantly hinder communication and quality of life. This study presents a plug-and-play humidity-sensing respiratory microphone (HSRM) with generalized features for individual users. Leveraging gold nanoparticle-based humidity sensors integrated into commercially available wearable face masks, the system enables patients to produce verbal communication without relying on vocal cord activity. By integrating nanoparticle-enhanced humidity sensors with advanced convolutional neural networks, the HSRM system accura

Humidity-responsive pectin/AgNPs/ZnO composite films with high antimicrobial and UV-proof functions.

ZnO nanoparticles and Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) tend to agglomerate when used individually, and high Ag+concentrations can cause cytotoxicity. To address these issues, we synthesized carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based antimicrobial mimetic peptides (AMPMs) by introducing amphiphilic cations on the surface of CMC using a chemical grafting method. Bis-formaldehyde-formylated AMPMs were prepared through the directional oxidation of AMPMs with periodate and used as the reducing agent to synthesize AgNPs on the surface of pectin in situ for the preparation of a pectin/AgNPs/ZnO composite film. The

High air humidity dampens salicylic acid pathway and NPR1 function to promote plant disease.

The occurrence of plant disease is determined by interactions among host, pathogen, and environment. Air humidity shapes various aspects of plant physiology and high humidity has long been known to promote numerous phyllosphere diseases. However, the molecular basis of how high humidity interferes with plant immunity to favor disease has remained elusive. Here we show that high humidity is associated with an "immuno-compromised" status in Arabidopsis plants. Furthermore, accumulation and signaling of salicylic acid (SA), an important defense hormone, are significantly inhibited under high humi

Humidity Reduces Rapid and Distant Airborne Dispersal of Viable Viral Particles in Classroom Settings.

The transmission of airborne pathogens is considered to be the main route through which a number of known and emerging respiratory diseases infect their hosts. While physical distancing and mask wearing may help mitigate short-range transmission, the extent of long-range transmission in closed spaces where a pathogen remains suspended in the air remains unknown. We have developed a method to detect viable virus particles by using an aerosolized bacteriophage Phi6 in combination with its host Pseudomonas phaseolicola, which when seeded on agar plates acts as a virus detector that can be placed

Effect of water scarcity during thermal-humidity exposure on the mineral footprint of sheep.

OBJECTIVE: Combination of two stressors on alteration of mineral footprints in animals needs due attention to meet maximum production and welfare, particularly in grazing sheep. This study tested whether ewes (Ovis aries) exposed to water deprivation and thermal-humidity stressors had altered mineral footprints in their wool, serum, urine, and feces. METHODS: Nine ewes (age = 3 years; mean body weight = 41±3.5 kg) were divided among a control group with free access to water, and treatment groups with water deprivation lasting either 2 h (2hWD) or 3 h (3hWD) after feeding. Impacts of air pollution, temperature, and relative humidity on leukocyte distribution: An epigenetic perspective.

BACKGROUND: Exploring the associations of air pollution and weather variables with blood leukocyte distribution is critical to understand the impacts of environmental exposures on the human immune system. OBJECTIVES: As previous analyses have been mainly based on data from cell counters, which might not be feasible in epidemiologic studies including large populations of long-stored blood samples, we aimed to expand the understanding of this topic by employing the leukocyte distribution estimated by DNA methylation profiles. METHODS: We measured DNA methylation profiles in blood samples using

Effect of feed-gas humidity on nitrogen atmospheric-pressure plasma jet for biological applications.

OBJECTIVE: We investigate the effect of feed-gas humidity on the oxidative properties of an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet using nitrogen gas. BACKGROUND: Plasma jets operating at atmospheric pressure are finding uses in medical and biological settings for sterilization and other applications involving oxidative stress applied to organisms. Most jets use noble gases, but some researchers use less expensive nitrogen gas. The feed-gas water content (humidity) has been found to influence the performance of noble-gas plasma jets, but has not yet been systematically investigated for jets using ni

Relative Effects of Temperature, Light, and Humidity on Clinging Behavior of Metacercariae-Infected Ants.

The lancet fluke, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, is perhaps the best-known example of parasite manipulation of host behavior, which is manifested by a radically changed behavior that leaves infected ants attached to vegetation at times when transmission to an herbivore host is optimal. Despite the publicity surrounding this parasite, curiously little is known about factors inducing and maintaining behavioral changes in its ant intermediate host. This study examined the importance of 3 environmental factors on the clinging behavior of red wood ants, Formica polyctena , infected with D. dendriticum .
