Prenatal diagnosis of fetal hydrometrocolpos secondary to a cloacal anomaly by magnetic resonance imaging.

Fetal female urogenital anomalies are often difficult to evaluate by ultrasonography, especially in late gestation. We report a case of fetal hydrometrocolpos detected at 35 weeks of gestation. Ultrasonography revealed a large retrovesical septate hypoechogenic mass in the fetal abdomen, however the sonographic findings were inconclusive. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed that the abdominal mass was fluid-filled with a mid-plane septum in the midline posterior to the bladder, and showed a connection to the dilated uterus that was duplicated. These findings were consistent with a diagn

Congenital Hydrometrocolpos as a Diagnostic Dilemma: A Report of Two Cases From Benin City, Nigeria.

Congenital hydrocolpos/hydrometrocolpos is a rare condition affecting the upper vagina/uterus and upper vagina, respectively, characterized by uterine and vagina dilation as a result of a distal obstruction to the flow of accumulated cervical mucus and secretions. The presentation of this condition may vary from abdominal pain with or without symptoms of urinary or gastrointestinal obstruction. These varied presentations may often confound and delay diagnosis. We present two cases of congenital hydrometrocolpos to highlight the diagnostic dilemma and increase the high index of suspicion. Cases

New Consideration of Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich Syndrome Diagnosed by Ultrasound.

OBJECTIVES: As a rare malformation of the female reproductive system, Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) was categorized into 3 classifications. It was recommended recently that, on the basis of the past classification, cervicovaginal atresia without communicating uteri should be newly added as classification 4. The surgical intervention will differ by type. To better optimize patient counseling as well as the preoperative evaluation and planning, our objective was to describe the ultrasound characteristics of each type of HWWS, including the new type. METHODS: From January 1995 to Nove

Molecular diagnosis reveals genetic heterogeneity for the overlapping MKKS and BBS phenotypes.

Hydrometrocolpos and polydactyly diagnosed in the prenatal period or early childhood may raise diagnostic dilemmas especially in distinguishing McKusick-Kaufman syndrome (MKKS) and the Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS). These two conditions can initially overlap. With time, the additional features of BBS appearing in childhood, such as retinitis pigmentosa, obesity, learning disabilities and progressive renal dysfunction allow clear differentiation between BBS and MKKS. Genotype overlap also exists, as mutations in the MKKS-BBS6 gene are found in both syndromes. We report 7 patients diagnosed in the

Prenatal diagnosis of McKusick-Kaufman/Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

A 24-year-old primigravid women with no remarkable history and antenatal follow-up was referred to our clinic with the diagnosis of fetal megacystis. Ultrasound examination revealed an oval shaped hypoechoic cystic mass measuring 80×55×50 mm occupying the fetal pelvis in a female fetus. The fluid inside the cyst was heterogeneous giving a two level appearance. A normal looking urinary bladder was visualised separately which was located in normal position. Further sonographic evaluation revealed postaxial polydactyly in both hands. The fetal echocardiography and amniotic fluid index was normal.

Transperitoneal and retroperitoneal robot-assisted urology in infants ≤ 10 kg: A FRUCT multi-centre study.

OBJECTIVE: Robot-assisted surgery is now established in pediatric urology; however, data on indications and morbidity in children weighing less than 10 kg remain limited. This study evaluates the feasibility and outcomes of robotic surgery in infants. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected multicentric data was performed over nine years (2015-2024) including infants weighing less than 10 kg who underwent robot-assisted urological surgery. Demographic data, perioperative characteristics, and complications were collected from seven university hospitals. RESULTS: 83 i

Persistent cloaca without vaginal-common channel fistula: A Case series characterizing a rare phenotype.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent cloaca occurs in approximately 1 in 25,000 live births. Among patients with cloaca, the absence of a vaginal connection to the common channel represents a rare phenotype with distinct anatomic and management considerations. We describe the urologic, gynecologic, and surgical characteristics of this patient subset. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of a single-institution cohort of patients with persistent cloaca managed at a quaternary-care children's hospital between 2019 and 2025. Patients were eligible if they underwent primary cloacal repair by our mu

Giant fetal hydrometrocolpos associated with cloacal anomaly causing postnatal respiratory distress.

Persistent cloaca is a rare presentation wherein the urethra, vagina, and rectum converge into a common channel with a single perineal opening. Fetal hydrometrocolpos can result if fluid accumulates behind an obstruction of this common channel. A 29-year-old woman (G4P1021) was referred at 36 2/7 weeks of gestation for evaluation of a fetal abdominal cystic mass. Detailed ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging showed two symmetric cystic masses, bilateral hydronephrosis, and oligohydramnios. Elective cesarean delivery was performed at 37 0/7 weeks; the baby weighed 4043 g with Apgar sc

Hydrometrocolpos Presenting as a Huge Abdominal Swelling and Obstructive Uropathy in a 4 Day Old Newborn: A Diagnostic Challenge.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal swelling is an uncommon presentation in newborn babies. A combination of huge abdominal swelling, obstructive uropathy and imperforate hymen in newborns has not been reported in the medical literature. CASE DETAILS: We report a 4 days old newborn with a rare presentation of hydrometrocolpos which posed a diagnostic challenge and consequently resulted in delays in diagnosis and treatment. CONCLUSION: Hydrometrocolpos should be considered as a differential diagnosis in neonates who present with huge abdominal swelling.

Fetal ascites and hydrometrocolpos due to persistent urogenital sinus and cloaca: a rare congenital anomaly and review of literature.

Fetal ascites can occur due to many heterogeneous disorders. Its association with hydrometrocolpos because of persistent urogenital sinus and cloaca is extremely rare. A 29-year-old primigravida presented at 32 weeks of gestation with ultrasonographic evidence of fetal ascites, a cystic pelvic mass, hydronephrosis and oligohydramnios. Fetal ascites in this case was due to fetal urine draining through fallopian tubes into the abdomen as a result of vesicovaginal fistula and distal vaginal atresia. The antenatal ultrasound results along with autopsy findings are discussed. Though rare, a persist

A case of McKusick-Kaufman Syndrome.

We are reporting a rare case of McKusick- Kaufman Syndrome in a ten-month old female infant from Addis Ababa with difficulty of urination often days duration. Clinical exam revealed supra-pubic mass with tenderness and had left hand postaxial polydactily. Ultrasound and CT scans showed the mass to be hydrometrocolpos posterior to the bladder. Intravenous urography revealed a lower abdomen-pelvic mass displacing and compressing the ureters with bilateral hydronephrosis. Further pelvic exam under anaesthesia revealed hydrometrocolpos with vaginal agenesis. This, to the best knowledge of the auth

Posterior cloaca--further experience and guidelines for the treatment of an unusual anorectal malformation.

INTRODUCTION: The term posterior cloaca refers to a malformation in which the urethra and vagina are fused, forming a urogenital sinus that deviates posteriorly to open in the anterior rectal wall or immediately anterior to the anus. METHODS: A retrospective review of 411 patients diagnosed with cloaca was performed to identify the ones with a posterior cloaca. Special emphasis was placed on anatomy, diagnosis, associated anomalies, and outcome in terms of urinary and fecal continence. Surgical treatment was a total urogenital mobilization with a transrectal approach. RESULTS: Twenty-nine pa

Prenatal diagnosis of anterior sacral meningocele.

Anterior sacral meningocele is an extremely rare condition and there has been only one previous report of a prenatal diagnosis. We report the case of a 36-year-old primigravida who was referred following detection of a huge fetal pelvic cyst on routine ultrasound examination at 19 + 4 weeks' gestation. Neither fetal ultrasound nor magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 20 + 5 weeks' gestation could detect communication between the cyst and the spinal cord. Because extension of the pear-shaped cyst through the pelvic diaphragm down to the perineum was reminiscent of dilated vagina and uterine cerv

Early abdomino-perineal pull-through vaginoplasty.

Vaginal agenesis is known as one of the Müllerian anomalies. Müllerian anomalies occur during gonadal development and differentiation, and may lead to complex outcomes. McKusick-Kaufman syndrome (MKS) is an autosomal recessive multiple malformation syndrome characterized by Müllerian anomalies with hydrometrocolpos (HMC) and postaxial polydactyly (PAP). We report a case of a female newborn that developed hydronephrosis and respiratory distress due to compression of the cystic mass and underwent surgery on postpartum day 3. Pull-through vaginoplasty was performed with an abdomino-perineal appro
