Incidence and health risk assessment of hydrogen cyanide and multi-mycotoxins in Nigerian garri.

Garri is a granular, starchy food prepared by the fermentation of mashed cassava. Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and mycotoxins are contaminants in certain foods at different points along the food value chain. The incidence and contamination levels of HCN and multi-mycotoxins in garri from five agroecological zones of Nigeria were determined using a spectrophotometric method and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy (UHPLC-MS/MS), respectively. The health risk associated with the consumption of contaminated garri was assessed. The health risk assessment model was used t

Hydrogen Cyanide and Aromatic Amine Yields in the Mainstream Smoke of 60 Little Cigars.

Mainstream smoke yields of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and three aromatic amines, 1-aminonaphthalene, 2-aminonaphthalene, and 4-aminobiphenyl, from 60 little cigar brands currently on the US market were measured for both International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Canadian Intense (CI) smoking regimens. The smoke yields are compared with those from 50 cigarette products measured by Counts et al. of Philip Morris USA (PMUSA) in 2005 [Counts et al. Regul. Toxicol. Pharmacol. 2005 41, 185-227] and 50 cigarette products measured by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in co

Removal of cyanide in aqueous solution by oxidation with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by copper oxide.

This work is dedicated to the removal of free cyanide from aqueous solution through oxidation with hydrogen peroxide H2O2 catalyzed by copper oxide nanoparticles. Effects of initial molar ratio [H2O2]0/[CN-]0, catalyst dose, temperature, pH and the catalyst stability on cyanide removal have been investigated. The use of copper oxide has improved the reaction rate showing catalytic activity. The cyanide removal efficiency was increased from 60% to 94% by increasing in the dose of catalyst from 0.5 g/L to 5.0 g/L. Increasing the temperature from 20 °C to 35 °C promotes cyanide removal and the fo

Hydrogen Cyanide in the Rhizosphere: Not Suppressing Plant Pathogens, but Rather Regulating Availability of Phosphate.

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria produce chemical compounds with different benefits for the plant. Among them, HCN is recognized as a biocontrol agent, based on its ascribed toxicity against plant pathogens. Based on several past studies questioning the validity of this hypothesis, we have re-addressed the issue by designing a new set of in vitro experiments, to test if HCN-producing rhizobacteria could inhibit the growth of phytopathogens. The level of HCN produced by the rhizobacteria in vitro does not correlate with the observed biocontrol effects, thus disproving the biocontrol hypothe

In vitro absorption of atmospheric carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide in undisturbed pooled blood.

Blood samples from aircraft accident victims are analyzed for carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and cyanide ion (CN(-)). Such victims often suffer open wounds near the autopsy blood collection sites. Many aircraft crashes result in fires that fill the victim's atmosphere with smoke that is rich in carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN). It is important to determine whether pooled blood in those wounds may have absorbed these gases after death, which could lead one to erroneously conclude that the presence of COHb and CN(-) in blood was the result of breathing in these gases. A laboratory desic

Background levels and diurnal variations of hydrogen cyanide in breath and emitted from skin.

The hydrogen cyanide (HCN) concentration in exhaled human breath and skin gas samples collected with different sampling techniques was measured using near-infrared cavity ring-down spectroscopy. The median baseline HCN concentrations in samples provided by 19 healthy volunteers 2-4 h after the last meal depended on the employed sampling technique: 6.5 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) in mixed (dead space and end-tidal) mouth-exhaled breath collected to a gas sampling bag, 3.9 ppbv in end-tidal mouth-exhaled breath, 1.3 ppbv in end-tidal nose-exhaled breath, 1.0 ppbv in unwashed skin and 0.6

The cold origin of life: A. Implications based on the hydrolytic stabilities of hydrogen cyanide and formamide.

It has been suggested that hydrogen cyanide (HCN) would not have been present in sufficient concentration to polymerize in the primitive ocean to produce nucleic acid bases and amino acids. We have measured the hydrolysis rates of HCN and formamide over the range of 30-150 degrees C and pH 0-14, and estimated the steady state concentrations in the primitive ocean. At 100 degrees C and pH 8, the steady state concentration of HCN and formamide were calculated to be 7 x 10(-13) M and 1 x 10(-15) M, respectively. Thus, it seems unlikely that HCN could have polymerized in a warm primitive ocean. It

Chronic poisoning by hydrogen cyanide in cassava and its prevention in Africa and Latin America.

Africa produces more than 30 million tons of cassava on about 5 million hectares (6 tons per hectare). Approximately 80% of the root production and 70% of the harvested area are from Western Africa. Recent reports suggest that the ingestion of poorly processed cassava roots is associated with the incidence of an ataxic neuropathy (konzo) in African countries. When cassava-based diets are not supplemented with good sources of protein and iodine, goiter and rickets are also prevalent. In certain countries of Africa where the rate of ataxic neuropathy is high, the incidence of thyroid disorders i

Effects of pulse exposure to sublethal levels of hydrogen cyanide on reproduction of American flagfish.

American flagfish (Jordanella floridae) were exposed to intermittent cyanide concentrations ranging from 0.065 to 0.15 mg/L hydrogen cyanide to determine the effects upon the embryonic, juvenile, and adult stages of development along with hatching success and fry survival of the subsequent F1 generation. The most significant effect was observed following embryonic exposure to levels as low as 0.075 mg/L hydrogen cyanide from fertilization to hatching. Hatching success was reduced to 37% when compared with controls while egg production among those embryos which successfully completed hatching a

Efficient purification of hydrogen cyanide by synergistic effects of electrochemical and liquid phase catalysis.

In this study, Co, Cu, Pd, and Pd/Cu composite metal ions were used to synthesize metal nanoparticles with high efficiency in purifying hydrogen cyanide gas. The pure liquid phase catalytic purification of hydrogen cyanide gas was studied. According to the removal rate, the Pd/Cu composite metal ions had the best purification efficiency among the nanoparticles of different metal types. The removal rate order was Pd/Cu>Pd>Cu>Co. The gas after reaction were analyzed by gas chromatography, and it was found that HCN was converted into CO2, N2 and NH3 by nanoparticles. Then, Pd/Cu composite metal i

Contribution of Hydrogen Cyanide to the Antagonistic Activity of Pseudomonas Strains Against Phytophthora infestans.

Plants face many biotic and abiotic challenges in nature; one of them is attack by disease-causing microbes. Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of late blight is one of the most prominent pathogens of the potato responsible for multi-billion-dollar losses every year. We have previously reported that potato-associated Pseudomonas strains inhibited P. infestans at various developmental stages. A comparative genomics approach identified several factors putatively involved in this anti-oomycete activity, among which was the production of hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Here, we report the relative c

Volatile-mediated killing of Arabidopsis thaliana by bacteria is mainly due to hydrogen cyanide.

The volatile-mediated impact of bacteria on plant growth is well documented, and contrasting effects have been reported ranging from 6-fold plant promotion to plant killing. However, very little is known about the identity of the compounds responsible for these effects or the mechanisms involved in plant growth alteration. We hypothesized that hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a major factor accounting for the observed volatile-mediated toxicity of some strains. Using a collection of environmental and clinical strains differing in cyanogenesis, as well as a defined HCN-negative mutant, we demonstrate

[The role of ethanol in complex poisonings with carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide in fire victims].

A total of 230 cases of deaths in burning spaces dating from the years 1995-2003 were investigated in Forensic Medicine Department, Silesian University of Medicine, Katowice. HbCO and HCN found in 177 blood samples ranged from 4-95 % (mean, 31,5 %) and 0,5-40,3 microg/ml (mean, 9,98 microg/ml), respectively. Moreover, ethanol was found in 122 blood samples. Its concentration ranged from 0,89-5,0 per thousand (mean, 1,45 per thousand). A comparative analysis of HbCO and HCN levels in the groups with and without ethanol showed that the range and the mean concentration of both these xenobiotics w

Carboxyhemoglobin and thiocyanate as biomarkers of exposure to carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide in tobacco smoke.

The determination of biomarkers in human body fluids is a useful tool, which allows the quantitative assessment of the exposure to chemicals or complex mixtures of chemicals and of early biological effects as a result of the exposure. Biomarkers require validation before their successful application in human studies. This review describes some general purposes of human biomonitoring and biomarkers including the requirements for validation. Risk assessment and harm reduction of smoking and tobacco products, respectively, is a very suitable field for the application of biomarkers. A brief histor

Potentiation of noise-induced hearing loss by low concentrations of hydrogen cyanide in rats.

Noise-induced hearing loss is the most prevalent occupational injury in the United States despite the adoption of clear permissible exposure limits and protocols for hearing conservation. This study identifies low-level chemical asphyxiant exposure as a risk factor capable of potentiating noise-induced hearing loss. Rats were exposed to 10, 30, and 50 ppm hydrogen cyanide (HCN) alone for 3.5 h (n = 28) or in combination with 2 h octave band noise exposure (100 dB(lin); n = 28). Additional groups received noise exposure alone (n = 16) and no treatment other than placement in an inhalation chamb
