Cyanide determination in whole blood can be performed by spectrophotometry after using diffusion coupled with coloration by hydroxocobalamin in a Conway dish. The technique may be accelerated by the use of a heating sheet at 45 degrees C. The method proved to be specific, sensitive, and fast, thus permitting measurements in emergency situations.

The aim of this study was to investigate the antihypertensive properties of cis-[Ru(bpy)2ImN(NO)]3+ (FOR0811) in normotensive and in Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced hypertensive rats. Vasorelaxant effects were analyzed by performing concentration response curve to FOR0811 in rat aortic rings in the absence or presence of 1H-[1,2,4]-oxadiazolo-[4,3,-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ), L-cysteine or hydroxocobalamin. Normotensive and L-NAME-hypertensive rats were treated with FOR0811 and the effects in blood pressure and heart rate variability in the frequency domain (HRV) were followed.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is traditionally treated with intramuscular injections of cobalamin, which are stressful events for children. In adults, studies have shown adequate absorption of intranasally administered vitamin B12. To date, data concerning efficacy of intranasal administration of vitamin B12 in children are lacking. The infusion of sodium nitroprusside during surgical operations produced plasma levels of cyanide of up to four times the control value. Plasma thiocyanate showed little change except during prolonged infusion of the drug, but total plasma B(12) tended to fall, as did methylcobalamin. Other cobalamins showed little change after nitroprusside infusion for short periods. During longer infusions the ratio of methylcobalamin to adenosyl + hydroxocobalamin fell and cyanocobalamin concentrations were high.
