The hyoid bone exhibits potential sex-based variations and is implicated in the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Sex-specific comparisons are lacking. The present meta-analysis aimed to address this gap.The Embase, MEDLINE and Web of Science databases were searched. The inclusion criteria were as follows: studies that reported the measurements of the hyoid bone-mandibular plane distance (HMP), demonstrated in cephalometric imaging (CEPH) in patients with OSA of both sexes, involving a polysomnography (PSG) examination with the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), as well as information on the

Hyoid bone-related carotid injury is a rare cause of neurovascular events. This report describes a case of a young, healthy male presenting with neck pain followed by left-sided hemiparesis. The patient was diagnosed with a transient ischaemic attack attributed to structural damage of the vascular surface of the right internal carotid artery as a direct result of continuous compression by an elongated hyoid bone. We describe a successful diagnosis using a series of manoeuvres during a six-vessel cerebral angiogram. Genetic testing later confirmed the diagnosis of vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrom

The holotypes of euharamiyidan Arboroharamiya allinhopsoni and Arboroharamiya jenkinsi preserve the auditory and hyoid bones, respectively. With additional structures revealed by micro-computerized tomography (CT) and X-ray micro-computed laminography (CL), we provide a detailed description of these minuscule bones. The stapes in the two species of Arboroharamiya are similar in having a strong process for insertion of the stapedius muscle. The incus is similar in having an almond-shaped body and a slim short process, in addition to a robust stapedial process with a short lenticular process pre

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Animal studies suggest a pivotal role of the hyoid bone in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We aimed to explore the role of the hyoid bone in humans by testing the hypotheses that muscle paralysis and lung volume (LV) changes displace the hyoid bone position particularly in people with obesity and/or OSA.
METHODS: Fifty patients undergoing general anesthesia participated in this study (20 participants with nonobese, non-OSA; 8 people with nonobese OSA; and 22 people with obese OSA). Three lateral neck radiographs to assess the hyoid position (primary variable) and craniofacial

Important aspects of orthognathic surgery are the effects of skeletal movement and changes in the position of the hyoid bone, tongue, soft palate, and dimensions of the pharyngeal airway. Our aims were to evaluate the 3-dimensional changes in the pharyngeal airway and in the position of the hyoid bone after mandibular setback in 30 patients who were diagnosed with mandibular prognathism and were treated by intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO). Three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomographic (CT) images were obtained preoperatively, one month postoperatively, and one year postoperatively.

Caudal tracheal displacement (TD) leads to improvements in upper airway (UA) function and decreased collapsibility. To better understand the mechanisms underlying these changes, we examined effects of TD on peripharyngeal tissue stress distributions [i.e., extraluminal tissue pressure (ETP)], deformation of its topographical surface (UA lumen geometry), and hyoid bone position. We studied 13 supine, anesthetized, tracheostomized, spontaneously breathing, adult male New Zealand white rabbits. Graded TD was applied to the cranial tracheal segment from 0 to ∼ 10 mm. ETP was measured at six locati

This study was aimed at measuring the changes in the hyoid bone position, tongue position, and hypopharyngeal airway space in subjects with mandibular setback osteotomies. Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 15 patients were taken preoperatively, 6 weeks postoperatively, and at the follow-up with a mean of 1.5 +/- 0.4 years. A significant decrease in the hypopharyngeal airway space following mandibular setback surgery was found (P < .01). This change sustained during the follow-up period. The hyoid bone moved down (P < .001), and the lower tongue point also moved down (P < .05) postoperativel

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the relationship between the three phases of hyoid bone movement and pharyngeal residue using the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data from 66 patients who underwent VFSS between April 2019 and December 2019. Hyoid bone movement was classified into three phases: upward, forward, and downward. We measured the velocity and distance of hyoid bone movement in each phase, as well as the pharyngeal residue after swallowing. The correlation between hyoid bone movement and the amount of pharyngeal residue was anal

BACKGROUND: Post-Stroke Dysphagia (PSD) is a common complication after stroke. An efficient, noninvasive assessment method is especially crucial for dysphagia. Submental ultrasound is an emerging noninvasive method for evaluating swallowing, enabling dynamic, real-time monitoring of the movements of the tongue and hyoid bone methods.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, single-center, observational study involving 213 stroke patients admitted to the department of rehabilitation between June 2023 and June 2024. All patients underwent assessment using the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS) via

OBJECTIVE: Hyoid bone movement is potentially related to aspiration risk in post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) patients but is difficult to assess quantitatively. This study aimed to measure the distance of hyoid bone movement more efficiently and accurately using a deep learning model and determine the clinical usefulness of the model in PSD patients.
METHODS: This study included 85 patients with PSD within 6 months from onset. Patients were grouped into an aspiration group (n = 35) and a non-aspiration group (n = 50) according to the results of a videofluoroscopic swallowing study. Hyoid bone move

BACKGROUND: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) is a major cause of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), potentially impacting craniofacial growth and development. Currently, whether children with ATH exhibit distinctive hyoid bone position and upper airway morphology remains uncertain. This research aimed to compare the hyoid bone position and upper airway morphology of children with and without ATH.
METHODS: A total of 199 children aged 6-8 years were recruited for the study, and their pre-treatment lateral cephalograms were obtained. The size of the adenoids and tonsils on the lateral cep
