Chorea-ballismus with nonketotic hyperglycemia in primary diabetes mellitus.

PURPOSE: To describe the neuroimaging (Ct, MR, and single-photon emission CT [SPECT]) findings in a series of patients with chorea-ballismus associated with nonketotic hyperglycemia in primary diabetes mellitus and to correlate the imaging findings with the clinical presentation. METHODS: The neuroimaging and clinical data from 10 patients with chorea-ballismus associated with nonketotic hyperglycemia in primary diabetes mellitus were evaluated. Family and drug histories, as well as other causes of chorea, were excluded. All 10 patients had CT, 5 also had MR imaging, and 3 had SPECT examinati

Some characteristics of hyperglycaemic crisis differ between patients with and without COVID-19 at a safety-net hospital in a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare patients with DKA, hyperglycaemic hyperosmolar syndrome (HHS), or mixed DKA-HHS and COVID-19 [COVID (+)] to COVID-19-negative (-) [COVID (-)] patients with DKA/HHS from a low-income, racially/ethnically diverse catchment area. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with patients admitted to an urban academic medical center between 1 March and 30 July 2020. Eligible patients met lab criteria for either DKA or HHS. Mixed DKA-HHS was defined as meeting all criteria for either DKA or HHS with at least 1 criterion for the other diagnosis. RESULTS: A total of 82 parti

Diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state in diabetes patients with heart failure: insight from the National inpatient sample.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) and Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State (HHS) are acute, life-threatening hyperglycemic conditions in diabetes. We aim to assess in-hospital cardiovascular outcomes of DKA and HHS in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with heart failure (HF) and compare both complications. METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample database was used to gather data on T2D patients admitted for HF (primary diagnosis) from 2008 to 2019. The secondary diagnoses were DKA or HHS. The outcomes investigated were mortality, ischemic stroke, acute renal failure, and cardiogenic shock. RESU

A standard set of person-centred outcomes for diabetes mellitus: results of an international and unified approach.

AIMS: To select a core list of standard outcomes for diabetes to be routinely applied internationally, including patient-reported outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a structured systematic review of outcome measures, focusing on adults with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. This process was followed by a consensus-driven modified Delphi panel, including a multidisciplinary group of academics, health professionals and people with diabetes. External feedback to validate the set of outcome measures was sought from people with diabetes and health professionals. RESULTS: The panel identified an esse

Predialysis glycemic control is an independent predictor of clinical outcome in type II diabetics on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between predialysis glycemic control and clinical outcomes for type II diabetic patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). DESIGN: Sixty type II diabetic patients on CAPD were classified into 2 groups according to the status of glycemic control. In group G (good glycemic control), more than 50% of blood glucose determinations were within 3.3-11 mmol/L and the glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) level was within 5-10% at all times. In group P (poor glycemic control), fewer than 50% of blood glucose determinations were within 3.3-11 mmol/L o

Diabetic and Nondiabetic Endocrine Emergencies: Clinical Spectrum and Outcomes From a Tertiary Care Center in North India.

ObjectiveEndocrine emergencies, although uncommon, are potentially life-threatening and require prompt diagnosis and timely intervention. Although diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) are well described, data on nondiabetic endocrine emergencies remain limited, particularly from low-resource settings. This study aimed to evaluate spectrum, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of endocrine emergencies presenting to a tertiary care hospital in North India.MethodsA prospective observational study was conducted over 18 months at a tertiary care academic hospital
