Gravitactic signal transduction elements in Astasia longa investigated during parabolic flights.

Euglena gracilis and its close relative Astasia longa show a pronounced negative gravitactic behavior. Many experiments revealed that gravitaxis is most likely mediated by an active physiological mechanism. The goal of the present study was to examine elements in the sensory transduction by means of inhibitors of gravitaxis and the intracellular calcium concentration during short microgravity periods. During the course of six parabolic flights (ESA 31th parabolic flight campaign and DLR 6th parabolic flight campaign) the effects of trifluoperazine (calmodulin inhibitor), caffeine (phosphodiest

Space adaptation syndrome: multiple etiological factors and individual differences.

Space motion sickness is a significant operational concern in the American and Soviet space programs. Nearly 70% of all astronauts and cosmonauts are affected to some degree during their first several days of flight. It is now beginning to appear that space motion sickness like terrestrial motion sickness is the consequence of multiple etiological factors. As we come to understand basic mechanisms of spatial orientation and sensory-motor adaptation we can begin to predict etiological factors in different motion environments. Individuals vary greatly in the extent to which they are susceptible

Neck muscle strength and endurance in fighter pilots: effects of a supervised training program.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical discomfort is common among pilots of high performance aircraft. An exercise program was introduced to increase the strength and endurance of the neck muscles. The purpose of this study was to analyze whether coaching or reinforcement strategies by a physical therapist was associated with improvement in neck muscle strength, endurance, and neck complaints in two cohorts of fighter pilots performing regular neck muscle exercises. METHODS: A reinforced group (RG) of 20 pilots (24-40 yr) at an Air Force base received weekly encouragement to perform their standardized exerci

Female acceleration tolerance: effects of menstrual state and physical condition.

INTRODUCTION: The literature contains a paucity of information on female tolerance to high sustained acceleration. With women now flying high-performance aircraft, gender-specific factors that may affect female acceleration tolerance have become increasingly important. The purpose of this investigation was to determine how menstrual state and physical condition affect acceleration tolerance. We hypothesized the menstrual cycle would have no effect on acceleration tolerance and that a positive correlation would exist between physical fitness level and tolerance to high sustained acceleration.

A sustained hyper-g load as a tool to simulate space sickness.

In April 1989 the three European scientist astronauts of the D1 Spacelab Mission were exposed to a 1.5 hours +3G centrifuge run in supine position, resulting in a linear acceleration along the subjects' x-axis. Afterwards, severe motion sickness symptoms were provoked by head movements (Sickness Induced by Centrifugation: SIC). The astronauts mentioned close similarities with what they experienced in space during the D1-Spacelab Mission in 1985, where head movements also provoked motion sickness symptoms (Space Adaptation Syndrome: SAS). Moreover, the astronauts agreed that the rank order of t

Biological clocks and blood clots in space: circadian disruption-induced modulation of thrombosis risk.

Long-duration space missions expose astronauts to microgravity, radiation, confinement, fluid redistribution, and circadian disruption, which together induce physiological adaptations, including cardiovascular hemodynamics. Emerging evidence suggests that spaceflight may modulate hemostasis and potentially increase thrombotic risk in the head/neck; however, the association of circadian disruption and hemostasis in space, and its ground-based analogs, has yet to be systematically evaluated. This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence from real-spaceflight missions and ground-based analo

Cerebral hypoperfusion precedes nausea during centrifugation.

INTRODUCTION: Nausea and motion sickness are important operational concerns for aviators and astronauts. Understanding the underlying mechanisms associated with motion sickness may lead to new treatments. The goal of this work was to determine if changes in cerebral blood flow precede the development of nausea in subjects susceptible to motion sickness. METHODS: Cerebral flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery (transcranial Doppler), BP, and end-tidal CO2 were measured while subjects were rotated on a centrifuge (250 degrees x s(-1)). Following 5 min of rotation, subjects were translated

A Medical Review of Fatal High-G U.S. Aerobatic Accidents.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to high G force is a known safety hazard in military aviation as well as civilian aerobatic flight. Tolerance to high G forces has been well studied in military pilots, but there is little research directed at civilian pilots who may have medications or medical conditions not permitted in military pilots.METHODS: In this case-control study, we identified 89 fatal high-G aerobatic accidents and 4000 fatal control accidents from 1995 through 2018 from the NTSB accident database and the FAA autopsy database. We retrieved medications and medical conditions from the FAA's pil

Effects of positive acceleration (+Gz stress) on liver enzymes, energy metabolism, and liver histology in rats.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to high sustained +Gz (head-to-foot inertial load) is known to have harmful effects on pilots' body in flight. Although clinical data have shown that liver dysfunction occurs in pilots, the precise cause has not been well defined. AIM: To investigate rat liver function changes in response to repeated +Gz exposure. METHODS: Ninety male Wistar rats were randomly divided into a blank control group (BC group, n = 30), a +6 Gz/5 min stress group (6GS group, n = 30), and a +10 Gz/5min stress group (10GS group, n = 30). The 6GS and 10GS groups were exposed to +6 Gz and +10 Gz,

+Gz Exposure and Cervical Spine Degeneration on MRI Among Fighter Pilots: A 10-Year Follow-Up Study.

INTRODUCTION: Fighter pilots are exposed to high +Gz forces, helmet-mounted equipment, and extreme head positions that potentially cause cervical spine degeneration and pain. This study aimed to investigate whether individual +Gz exposure, quantified by Fatigue Index (FI), predicts cervical spine degenerative changes and neck pain over a 10-yr follow-up. METHODS: A total of 56 Finnish Air Force fighter pilots were followed prospectively for 10 yr. +Gz exposure was recorded using flight hours and FI recordings. Cervical MRI was performed at the baseline and during the follow-up and evaluated b

Differential contributions to the interception of occluded ballistic trajectories by the temporoparietal junction, area hMT/V5+, and the intraparietal cortex.

The ability to catch objects when transiently occluded from view suggests their motion can be extrapolated. Intraparietal cortex (IPS) plays a major role in this process along with other brain structures, depending on the task. For example, interception of objects under Earth's gravity effects may depend on time-to-contact predictions derived from integration of visual signals processed by hMT/V5+ with a priori knowledge of gravity residing in the temporoparietal junction (TPJ). To investigate this issue further, we disrupted TPJ, hMT/V5+, and IPS activities with transcranial magnetic stimulat

Simulation of Space-Adaptation Syndrome on Earth.

The three Spacelab D-1 Scientist Astronauts were exposed to a 1.5 h centrifuge run in the supine position, resulting in a linear 3 g acceleration. They used their space experience to evaluate their readaptation to normal gravity and compared their observations with 'Space Adaptation Syndrome'. After the centrifuge runs, the vestibular visual system appeared to be modified in a very specific and reproducible manner. Readaptation to the normal 1 g environment took at least 6 h. During this period there was a striking similarity to the astronauts' experience during adaptation to weightlessness in

Neurophysiology of developing fish at altered gravity: background--facts--perspectives.

During the entire evolution of life on Earth, the phylogenetic as well as the individual development of all organisms took place under constant gravity conditions, against which they achieved specific countermeasures for compensation and adaptation. On the one side, gravity represents a factor of physical restriction, which compelled the ancestors of all extant living beings to develop basic achievements to counter the gravitational force (e.g., elements of statics like any kind of skeleton--from actin to bone--to overcome gravity enforced size limits or to keep form). On the other side, alrea

Repetitive high G exposure is associated with increased occurrence of cardiac valvular regurgitation.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to repeated high +Gz loads and the methods to prevent loss of consciousness cause unique stresses on the cardiovascular system. The purpose of this study was to determine if the +Gz environment is associated with an increased occurrence of valvular regurgitation in pilots of high performance aircraft. METHODS: There were 247 subjects who were divided into pilot (n = 46) and non-pilot (n = 201) groups. Pilots were defined as those individuals who had flown at least 1000 h in high performance aircraft. The echocardiographic data of these subjects were examined retrospective
