Common MFRP sequence variants are not associated with moderate to high hyperopia, isolated microphthalmia, and high myopia.

PURPOSE: The membrane-type frizzled-related protein (MFRP) gene is selectively expressed in the retinal pigment epithelium and ciliary body, and mutations of this gene cause nanophthalmos. The MFRP gene may not be essential for retinal function but has been hypothesized to play a role in ocular axial length regulation. The involvement of the MFRP gene in moderate to high hyperopic, isolated microphthalmic/anophthalmic, and high myopic patients was tested in two phases: a mutation screening/sequence variant discovery phase and a genetic association study phase. METHODS: Eleven hyperopic, ten m

The effects of intensity, spectral purity and duty cycle on red light-induced hyperopia in tree shrews.

INTRODUCTION: There have recently been several clinical studies suggesting that brief periods of exposure to red light (repeated low-level red light, 'RLRL') may produce a dramatic anti-myopia effect, calling for further investigations into its therapeutic parameters. Unfortunately, many experimental species used in refractive studies develop myopia in response to this wavelength. Tree shrews are the only animal model other than rhesus monkeys that consistently exhibit hyperopic responses to ambient red light. Here, tree shrews were used to study the influence of the spectral purity, duty cycl

Gap junction Delta-2b (gjd2b/Cx35.1) depletion causes hyperopia and visual-motor deficiencies in the zebrafish.

The zebrafish is a powerful model to investigate the developmental roles of electrical synapses because many signaling pathways that regulate the development of the nervous system are highly conserved from fish to humans. Here, we provide evidence linking the mammalian connexin-36 (Cx36) ortholog gjd2b/Cx35.1, a major component of electrical synapses in the zebrafish, with a refractive error in the context of morphological, molecular, and behavioral changes of zebrafish larvae. Two abnormalities were identified. The optical coherence tomography analysis of the adult retina confirmed changes to

Spherical equivalent pre- and post-implantable collamer lens implantation in patients with myopia, hyperopia, and stable keratoconus.

PURPOSE: Refractive errors are common in Saudi Arabia and keratorefractive surgeries are usually done to correct them. However, not all patients are fit and complications postoperatively are a concern. Implantable collamer lens (ICL) implantation can be used for patients who are not fit for keratorefractive surgeries. ICL can also be used for keratoconus. We elected to evaluate the outcomes of patients who had ICL implantation for refractive errors or keratoconus. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients aged between 21 and 45 years old, who attended the anterior segment clinic at King K
