Once upon a time: Narrative storytelling, hypnosis, and the brain.

The article explores the nature of narrative, its impact on key neural circuits in the brain, and the role of those activated circuits as drivers of hypnotically guided personal change. The author views clinical hypnosis as a form of interactive reciprocity that engages clients' neuroplastic potential (i.e. trance). This emergent potential is evoked during the therapeutic interaction between a client and clinician. Furthermore, the author describes clinical hypnosis as using forms of suggestion to facilitate change to the self-reinforcing narratives to which clients subscribe. Suggestions them

Eight Modules of Psychotherapy for Chronic Pain Informed by Hypnosis.

Chronic pain is a health issue for millions of people and costs billions of dollars in health care and work productivity. Medical interventions, while sometimes beneficial, often fail, and issues surrounding opioid analgesics constitute a significant concern. Hypnosis has shown great promise in reducing suffering from chronic pain, but it is often applied incorrectly or insufficiently to address this problem. This article discusses using a biopsychosocial model for managing pain centered on hypnosis, based on recent publications. We present eight modules of psychotherapy informed by hypnosis,

Research on Recognition of Road Hypnosis in the Typical Monotonous Scene.

Road traffic safety can be influenced by road hypnosis. Accurate detection of the driver's road hypnosis is a very important function urgently required in the driver assistance system. Road hypnosis recurs frequently in a certain period, and it tends to occur in a typical monotonous scene such as a tunnel or a highway. Taking the scene of a tunnel or a highway as a typical example, road hypnosis was studied through simulated driving experiments and vehicle driving experiments. A road hypnosis recognition model based on principal component analysis (PCA) and a long short-term memory network (LS

Reconsidering Hypnosis and Psychoanalysis: Toward Creating a Context for Understanding.

Sigmund Freud developed what became psychoanalysis in the context of his experiences with hypnosis and the treatment of the grand hysterics of his era, conditions largely classified among the dissociative disorders in contemporary systems of diagnosis. He rapidly constructed understandings of the human mind and human distress that replaced the concept of dissociation and a model of pathology that was passive (associated with reduced psychic cohesion), with the paradigm of an active defensive process he termed repression, and an understanding that psychological discomfort was the outcome of int

Hypnosis for Asthma and Vocal Cord Dysfunction in a Patient With Autism.

Wheezing in children often is the result of asthma, but vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) may cause stridor or sounds that sometimes are misattributed to the wheezing of asthma. The frequent comorbidity of asthma and VCD also adds to the difficulty in making a clear diagnosis. The challenges of evaluating and treating wheezing are complicated further in children with developmental disorders, such as autism, because of the difficulties of obtaining an adequate history and assessing the clinical response to treatment. This article presents a patient with multiple psychiatric problems, including autis

Hypnosis to alleviate the symptoms of ciguatera toxicity: a case study.

Ciguatera toxicity is a poisoning from consuming reef fish that had fed on dinoflagellates such as Gambierdiscus toxicus found along coral reefs. The toxin is oil soluble, odorless, colorless, tasteless, heat stable, and is concentrated in larger carnivorous fish such as amberjack, barracuda, eel, grouper, red snapper, sea bass, and Spanish mackerel. Onset of symptoms is usually within 6-12 hours after ingestion. Gastrointestinal symptoms lasting 1-2 days include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Neurological symptoms may persist for weeks or several months or--rarely--years and

Hypnosis and acupuncture (hypnopuncture) for prurigo nodularis: a case report.

Prurigo Nodularis (PN) is a chronic pruritic skin condition for which current conventional therapies are of limited benefit and with potentially toxic effects. Acupuncture--the insertion of thin needles at specific points on the skin--has been shown to alleviate itching through a number of itch-associated mediator effects. Hypnosis has been shown to modify and reduce the intensity of itching as well. A 44 year-old woman presented with a 30-year history of a diffuse itchy rash diagnosed as PN. She had tried various antihistamine and corticosteroid medications, to no avail. A treatment regimen u

Hypnosis in the treatment of depression: considerations in research design and methods.

Depressive disorders constitute a serious problem in the United States and around the world. The appearance of practice guidelines and lists of evidenced-based therapies suggests that adequate treatments for depression exist. However, a careful consideration of what is known and not known about the treatment of depression leaves plenty of room for improved approaches to addressing this condition. Although there has been a dearth of research on the treatment of depression using hypnosis, there are several compelling arguments for the inclusion of hypnotic approaches in the array of current stra

Integration of hypnosis with acupuncture: possible benefits and case examples.

Acupuncture treatment uses ultrafine needles which are inserted into specified points on the skin (acupoints). Acupuncture can help alleviate pain and inflammation, possibly through the increased release of pituitary beta-endorphins and ACTH. Hypnosis can also help alleviate pain syndromes, and may have centrally mediated immunomodulatory effects. The use of these 2 treatments simultaneously may potentially assist and augment the effects of each another. Two case reports where both treatments are used together are presented: One showing how hypnosis can help in the treatment of painful acupoin

Self-hypnosis for management of chronic dyspnea in pediatric patients.

INTRODUCTION: Hypnotherapy can be useful in the management of anxiety, discomfort, and psychosomatic symptoms, all of which may contribute to a complaint of dyspnea. Therefore, instruction in self-hypnosis was offered to 17 children and adolescents with chronic dyspnea, which had not resolved despite medical therapy, and who were documented to have normal lung function at rest. This report documents the result of this intervention. METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified all patients followed by a single pediatric pulmonologist (R.D.A.), with a chief complaint of chronic dyspnea from
