Immunofixation electrophoresis image interpretation using transfer learning method.

INTRODUCTION: Immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) is the gold standard for identifying monoclonal proteins in plasma cell disorders, but its interpretation is complex, time-consuming, and prone to inter-observer variability. This study aimed to develop deep learning models that can rapidly and accurately interpret IFE images and reduce subjectivity in diagnostic evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A dataset of 5226 IFE images from University Hospital was labeled by experts and divided into training (80 %) and testing (20 %) sets. Two classification strategies were explored: a two-stage model

BCL-Former: Localized Transformer Fusion with Balanced Constraint for polyp image segmentation.

Polyp segmentation remains challenging for two reasons: (a) the size and shape of colon polyps are variable and diverse; (b) the distinction between polyps and mucosa is not obvious. To solve the above two challenging problems and enhance the generalization ability of segmentation method, we propose the Localized Transformer Fusion with Balanced Constraint (BCL-Former) for Polyp Segmentation. In BCL-Former, the Strip Local Enhancement module (SLE module) is proposed to capture the enhanced local features. The Progressive Feature Fusion module (PFF module) is presented to make the feature aggre

SGCL: Spatial guided contrastive learning on whole-slide pathological images.

Self-supervised representation learning (SSL) has achieved remarkable success in its application to natural images while falling behind in performance when applied to whole-slide pathological images (WSIs). This is because the inherent characteristics of WSIs in terms of gigapixel resolution and multiple objects in training patches are fundamentally different from natural images. Directly transferring the state-of-the-art (SOTA) SSL methods designed for natural images to WSIs will inevitably compromise their performance. We present a novel scheme SGCL: Spatial Guided Contrastive Learning, to f

Accuracy of automatic structure propagation for daily magnetic resonance image-guided head and neck radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Deformable image registration (DIR) and contour propagation are used in daily online adaptation for hybrid MRI linac (MRL) treatments. The accuracy of the propagated contours may vary depending on the chosen workflow (WF), affecting the amount of required manual corrections. This study investigated the impact of three different WFs of contour propagations produced by a clinical treatment planning system for a high-field MRL on head and neck cancer patients. METHODS: Seventeen patients referred for curative radiotherapy for oropharyngeal cancer underwent standard CT-bas

Evaluation of k-Space Acquisition Strategies in Nonuniform B0 (NuBo) MRI.

PURPOSE: To evaluate k-space acquisition strategies for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a nonuniform B0 (NuBo) field-cycling system, focusing on image quality, scan-time efficiency, robustness to B0 inhomogeneity, and RF coil bandwidth constraints. METHODS: Three acquisition strategies were compared: single-shot turbo spin echo (SS-TSE), multi-echo spin echo (MESE) with repeated phase encoding, and spin echo single-point imaging (SE-SPI) without applied readout (RO) gradients. Experiments were performed on an open, low-field, field-cycling MRI system using a nonuniform electromagnet. Imag

Phase Image Display Settings for Paramagnetic Rim Lesion Detection in Multiple Sclerosis: A Practical Guide.

The 2024 revisions of the McDonald criteria incorporate the paramagnetic rim lesion (PRL) into the diagnostic framework of multiple sclerosis, and PRL evolution is increasingly recognized as a marker of disease progression. PRLs are detected on phase images of susceptibility-sensitive sequences, but their visibility depends critically on display settings. Current consensus recommendations provide detailed guidance on acquisition parameters yet do not address the phase-image window/level applied at the reading workstation; an inappropriate phase window can render rims invisible. We discuss prac

PANTHER Challenge Report: Cross-Domain Pancreatic Tumor Segmentation in Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Accurate delineation of pancreatic tumors on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is important for diagnosis, radiotherapy treatment planning, and outcome assessment, but remains challenging due to complex anatomy and subtle tumor appearance. In routine practice, tumor contours on MRI are produced manually, which is time-consuming and subject to inter-observer variability. Radiotherapy on MRI-Linear Accelerator (MRI-Linac) systems further requires fast and consistent Gross Tumor Volume (GTV) contours for online adaptation, yet most public pancreas tumor segmentation benchmarks focus on Computed To

Fusion and pure feature extraction framework for intraoperative hyperspectral of thyroid lesion.

Thyroid cancer has remained one of the most prevalent endocrine malignancies. In routine surgery, thyroid cancer analysis involves two time-consuming steps: intraoperative frozen section preparation and manual microscopic examination. Recently, info-rich hyperspectral intelligence analysis has been studied, reducing subjective bias but only optimizing the intraoperative second step and the model complexity, ignoring the independent features that possess substance fingerprints. To bridge the gaps, we developed a hyperspectral recognition algorithm called PS4EM-SN for intraoperatively ex-vivo ma

Improving the SIENA performance using BEaST brain extraction.

We present an improved image analysis pipeline to detect the percent brain volume change (PBVC) using SIENA (Structural Image Evaluation, using Normalization, of Atrophy) in populations with Alzheimer's dementia. Our proposed approach uses the improved brain extraction mask from BEaST (Brain Extraction based on nonlocal Segmentation Technique) instead of the conventional BET (Brain Extraction Tool) for SIENA. We compared four varying options of BET as well as BEaST and applied these five methods to analyze scan-rescan MRIs in ADNI from 332 subjects, longitudinal ADNI MRIs from the same 332 sub

Breathing chest radiography using a dynamic flat-panel detector combined with computer analysis.

Kinetic information is crucial when evaluating certain pulmonary diseases. When a dynamic flat-panel detector (FPD) can be used for a chest examination, kinetic information can be obtained simply and cost-effectively. The purpose of this study was to develop methods for analyzing respiratory kinetics, such as movement of the diaphragm and lung structures, and the respiratory changes in x-ray translucency in local lung fields. Postero-anterior dynamic chest radiographs during respiration were obtained with a modified FPD, which provided dynamic chest radiographs at a rate of 3 frames/s. Image r

Comparison of human and automatic segmentations of kidneys from CT images.

PURPOSE: A controlled observer study was conducted to compare a method for automatic image segmentation with conventional user-guided segmentation of right and left kidneys from planning computerized tomographic (CT) images. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Deformable shape models called m-reps were used to automatically segment right and left kidneys from 12 target CT images, and the results were compared with careful manual segmentations performed by two human experts. M-rep models were trained based on manual segmentations from a collection of images that did not include the targets. Segmentation us

Accelerated Abdominal MRI: A Review of Current Methods and Applications.

MRI is widely used for the diagnosis and management of various abdominal diseases involving organs such as the liver, pancreas, and kidneys. However, one major limitation of MRI is its relatively slow imaging speed compared to other modalities. In addition, respiratory motion poses a significant challenge in abdominal MRI, often requiring patients to hold their breath multiple times during an exam. This requirement can be particularly challenging for sick, elderly, and pediatric patients, who may have reduced breath-holding capacity. As a result, rapid imaging plays an important role in routin

M2KD-Net: A multimodal multi-domain knowledge-driven framework for Parkinson's disease diagnosis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a challenging neurodegenerative condition often prone to diagnostic errors, where early and accurate diagnosis is critical for effective clinical management. However, existing diagnostic methods often fail to fully exploit multimodal data or systematically incorporate expert domain knowledge. To address these limitations, we propose M2KD-Net, a multimodal and knowledge-driven diagnostic framework that integrates imaging and non-imaging clinical data with structured expert insights to enhance diagnostic performance. The framework consists of three key modules: (1) a

Liver elastography: what it is, how it is done, and how it is interpreted.

Liver elastography is a noninvasive method for diagnosing fibrosis that has been developed over the last decade in response to the limitations of liver biopsies, blood markers, and traditional imaging modalities. There are different methods of measuring tissue stiffness through ultrasound; thus far, shear wave elastography has proven superior for diagnosing clinically significant liver fibrosis, where early detection modifies the approach to treatment and improves prognosis. This article aims to provide a brief review of the different methods for performing elastography with ultrasound, focusi

Image reconstruction from truncated fan-beam projections along a circular trajectory using the virtual fan-beam method.

Objective. In this paper, we investigate how the virtual fan-beam (VFB) method can be used to perform mathematically correct 2D reconstruction in a region-of-interest (ROI), using truncated fan-beam projections acquired on a circular scan, for truncation that only occurs on one side of the object.Approach.We start by choosing a virtual fan-beam trajectory and specifying how to obtain the corresponding virtual projections. Then, three VFB formulas are obtained by applying known super-short-scan (SSS) formulas to this virtual trajectory. Two of them perform the backprojection in a virtual paralle

Multi-window scanning method for region-of-interest selection in pancreatic endoscopic ultrasound images.

This study presents a method for semantic segmentation of pancreatic endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) images. We developed a hybrid method to automatically select relevant frames from EUS video sequences, employing two nested dynamic windows: a smaller window scans local regions of each frame, while a larger window defines the overall scanning area, capturing spatial context. Texture features, including mode, mean, and standard deviation, are extracted from both windows to construct a feature vector for a fully connected neural network classifier (NNC), which predicts the class of each pixel. Leveraging commonality across multiple tissue slices for enhanced whole slide image classification using graph convolutional networks.

BACKGROUND: Accurate classification of histopathological whole slide images (WSIs) is essential for cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. Conventional WSI creation involves slicing a biopsy tissue into multiple slices, placing them on a single glass slide, and digitally scanning them. While deep learning approaches have shown promise in WSI analysis, they mostly overlook potential common patterns across different slices of the original tissue. METHODS: We propose a novel technique that leverages inter-slice commonality to enhance classification performance. Our method constructs graphs for

ToBaFu: Topology-based fusion model for classification of two-dimensional cancer images.

Medical images play a pivotal role in disease diagnosis. Numerous studies on cancer image analysis focus on end-to-end deep neural networks, neglecting the analysis of global topological features in images. In cancer diagnosis, pathological images frequently display structures like holes or loops that are absent in healthy images, highlighting the benefits of topological analysis of images. In our study, we employ persistent homology (PH) to extract topological features from two-dimensional cancer images. Then, we propose a topology-based model (Topo) for image classification by implementing a
