Breast pathology image segmentation based on DESB-net: a fusion strategy of detail enhancement, edge focus, and cross-layer connections.

Breast cancer poses a significant threat to women's health, and early diagnosis is crucial for reducing mortality rates. Automatic breast tumor segmentation is important in medical image processing, but existing methods face challenges with breast pathology images due to sample scarcity, image degradation after data augmentation, and limitations in feature extraction. Traditional networks like U-Net often lose small lesions and edge details during downsampling and struggle with complex images and class imbalance. To address these issues, this study proposes DetailEdgeSkipBalance-Net (DESB-Net)

Frequency-aware Vision Mamba With Deformable Windowed Selective Scan for Ultrasound Image Segmentation.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate segmentation of ultrasound images is crucial for medical diagnosis and treatment. However, achieving precise lesion segmentation is challenging owing to inter-class indistinction caused by low contrast, high speckle noise and blurred boundaries, as well as intra-class inconsistency resulting from variations in lesion size, shape and location. METHODS: To address these challenges, we propose a frequency-aware vision mamba network with deformable windowed selective scan. Specifically, we introduce the frequency-aware selective state space layer, which uses fast Fourier trans

crossMoDA challenge: Evolution of cross-modality domain adaptation techniques for vestibular schwannoma and cochlea segmentation from 2021 to 2023.

The cross-Modality Domain Adaptation (crossMoDA) challenge series, initiated in 2021 in conjunction with the International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI), focuses on unsupervised cross-modality segmentation, learning from contrast-enhanced T1 (ceT1) and transferring to T2 MRI. The task is an extreme example of domain shift chosen to serve as a meaningful and illustrative benchmark. From a clinical application perspective, it aims to automate Vestibular Schwannoma (VS) and cochlea segmentation on T2 scans for more cost-effective VS management.

Universal Vessel Segmentation for Multi-Modality Retinal Images.

We identify two major limitations in the existing studies on retinal vessel segmentation: 1) Most existing works are restricted to one modality, i.e., the Color Fundus (CF). However, multi-modality retinal images are used every day in the study of the retina and diagnosis of retinal diseases, and the study of vessel segmentation on other modalities is scarce; 2) Even though a few works extended their experiments to new modalities such as the Multi-Color Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy (MC), these works still require fine-tuning a separate model for the new modality. The fine-tuning will require

Anatomy-aware transformer-based model for precise rectal cancer detection and localization in MRI scans.

Rectal cancer is a major cause of cancer-related mortality, requiring accurate diagnosis via MRI scans. However, detecting rectal cancer in MRI scans is challenging due to image complexity and the need for precise localization. While transformer-based object detection has excelled in natural images, applying these models to medical data is hindered by limited medical imaging resources. To address this, we propose the Spatially Prioritized Detection Transformer (SP DETR), which incorporates a Spatially Prioritized (SP) Decoder to constrain anchor boxes to regions of interest (ROI) based on anat

DiffMIC-v2: Medical Image Classification via Improved Diffusion Network.

Recently, Denoising Diffusion Models have achieved outstanding success in generative image modeling and attracted significant attention in the computer vision community. Although a substantial amount of diffusion-based research has focused on generative tasks, few studies apply diffusion models to medical diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a diffusion-based network (named DiffMIC-v2) to address general medical image classification by eliminating unexpected noise and perturbations in image representations. To achieve this goal, we first devise an improved dual-conditional guidance strategy th

Ceusia-Breast: computer-aided diagnosis with contrast enhanced ultrasound image analysis for breast lesions.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) has been used for various applications in breast diagnosis. The superiority of CEUS over conventional B-mode imaging in the ultrasound diagnosis of the breast lesions in clinical practice has been widely confirmed. On the other hand, there have been many proposals for computer-aided diagnosis of breast lesions on B-mode ultrasound images, but few for CEUS. We propose a semi-automatic classification method based on machine learning in CEUS of breast lesions. METHODS: The proposed method extracts spatial and temporal features

High-contrast ultrafast ultrasound power doppler imaging using subarray adaptive temporal autocorrelation with phase compensation.

Compared to the conventional zero-lag autocorrelation (R(0)) estimation which directly accumulates the power of Doppler ensembles for ultrafast ultrasound power Doppler (PD) imaging, first-lag autocorrelation (R(1)) enhances the noise suppression in PD imaging by exploiting the temporal coherence among ensembles. The temporal multiply-and-sum (TMAS) algorithm can further reduce the noise level by multiplying the correlation pairs in R(1) estimation before summation. Nonetheless, TMAS estimation often suffers from noticeable signal loss due to blood flow decorrelation in the presence of tempora

MR imaging of the liver at 1.5 T: value of signal averaging in suppressing motion artifacts.

OBJECTIVE: Prior reports have suggested that signal averaging is not as effective as phase reordering for suppressing motion-related artifacts on T1-weighted spin-echo MR imaging of the liver at high field strengths. We hypothesized that with shorter TEs, signal averaging could be effective, and therefore undertook this study to compare signal averaging with phase reordering at 1.5T. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirty consecutive patients underwent MR imaging of the liver at 1.5 T with two T1-weighted spin-echo pulse sequences. In one sequence we used signal averaging and in the other we used phase

Frequency-Domain Reconstruction of the Speed of Sound in Ring-Array Ultrasound Computed Tomography With Stochastic Phase Encoding.

The framework of ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) has recently reemerged as a powerful, safe, and operator-independent way to image the breast. State-of-the-art image reconstruction methods are performed with iterative techniques based on deterministic optimization algorithms in the frequency domain in the 300 kHz - 1 MHz bandwidth. Alternative algorithms with deterministic and stochastic optimization have been considered in the time domain. In this article, we present the equivalent stochastic inversion in the frequency domain [phase encoding (PE)], with a focus on reconstructing the spe

A stochastic alternative technique for Compton Maximum Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) reconstruction.

Even though iterative methods and particularly Maximum Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) algorithms have been established in reconstruction with Compton data, their detailed design with respect to physical rules and processes dominate their plain implementation in the form of a system matrix. A new elementary but efficient alternative for the well-known system matrix with respect to Compton Camera image reconstruction is presented in this work. For each detected event there is a weighting factor inserted as an accumulated probability which carries all the necessary information. This p

U-MLP: MLP-based ultralight refinement network for medical image segmentation.

The convolutional neural network (CNN) and Transformer play an important role in computer-aided diagnosis and intelligent medicine. However, CNN cannot obtain long-range dependence, and Transformer has shortcomings in computational complexity and a large number of parameters. Recently, compared with CNN and Transformer, the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP)-based medical image processing network can achieve higher accuracy with smaller computational and parametric quantities. Hence, in this work, we propose an encoder-decoder network, U-MLP, based on the ReMLP block. The ReMLP block contains an ove

CAHA-Net: A novel MR image classification model based on DenseNet incorporating coordinate attention and hybrid augmentation.

Traditional diagnostic approaches are time-consuming and labor-intensive, and the field currently lacks a comprehensive evaluation of mainstream models that addresses their complementary strengths. Computer-aided diagnosis methods can significantly increase the accuracy and efficiency of MRI-based image classification, thereby providing useful support for brain tumor computer-aided diagnosis research. To address these challenges, this study utilizes a brain tumor MRI dataset comprising 4,264 images from 333 subjects to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of various mainstream Convolutional Neur

Enhancing lumbar disc herniation classification through region-of-interest guidance and geometric shape features.

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is one of the most common degenerative diseases of the spine. Magnetic resonance image is the most effective way to detect LDH. The variety of shapes and blurred boundaries of diseased discs, along with the unclear classification basis of existing methods and their poor ability to differentiate between lesion types, make computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of LDH challenging. We propose an enhanced classification of LDH through region-of-interest guidance and geometric shape features (RGGS-Net) to address these challenges. RGCG-Net establishes the connection between the

Exploring transformer reliability in clinically significant prostate cancer segmentation: A comprehensive in-depth investigation.

Despite the growing prominence of transformers in medical image segmentation, their application to clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) has been overlooked. Minimal attention has been paid to domain shift analysis and uncertainty assessment, critical for safely implementing computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. Domain shift in medical imagery refers to differences between the data used to train a model and the data evaluated later, arising from variations in imaging equipment, protocols, patient populations, and acquisition noise. While recent models enhance in-domain performance,

MRI-compatible device for examining brain activation related to stepping.

Repetitive and alternating lower limb movements are a specific component of human gait. Due to technical challenges, the neural mechanisms underlying such movements have not been previously studied with functional magnetic resonance imaging. In this study, we present a novel treadmill device employed to investigate the kinematics and the brain activation patterns involved in alternating and repetitive movements of the lower limbs. Once inside the scanner, 19 healthy subjects were guided by two visual cues and instructed to perform a motor task which involved repetitive and alternating movement

Source-detector trajectory optimization in cone-beam computed tomography: a comprehensive review on today's state-of-the-art.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging is becoming increasingly important for a wide range of applications such as image-guided surgery, image-guided radiation therapy as well as diagnostic imaging such as breast and orthopaedic imaging. The potential benefits of non-circular source-detector trajectories was recognized in early work to improve the completeness of CBCT sampling and extend the field of view (FOV). Another important feature of interventional imaging is that prior knowledge of patient anatomy such as a preoperative CBCT or prior CT is commonly available. This provides the op

A ResNet-ViT classification model for thyroid nodules using ultrasound images and clinical information.

The incidence of thyroid nodules is relatively high. Doctors typically distinguish the benign and malignant nodules based on ultrasound images, but this method has the risk of misdiagnosis, causing serious consequences for patients. Therefore, improving diagnostic accuracy through Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) is crucial. In this study, we propose a novel feature fusion network ResNet-ViT, based on ResNet18 and ViT-l-16, to predict the benign and malignant nature of thyroid nodules. This model adopts the conv layer, layer1 and layer2 of ResNet18 to extract local features, and uses ViT-l-16 wi

Atlas selection methods for multi-atlas-based segmentation in breast cancer radiotherapy planning.

We evaluated atlas selection methods for multi-atlas-based segmentation (MABS) in breast cancer radiotherapy planning. Forty-five patients were divided into 30 atlas and 15 test cases. The 30 atlases were stratified into three groups based on breast separation, height, and volume. Firstly, MABS was performed on each of the 30 atlas cases using the remaining 29 atlases. Secondly, MABS was performed on 15 test cases using the 30 atlases. The Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) was calculated to assess the agreement between MABS and manual segmentation. The DSC was found to increase as more atlases
