The relationship between transliminality, hypnotic and imaginative suggestibility, and other personality traits.

To our knowledge, no study has directly examined the link between hypnotic response and the personality trait of transliminality (which is underpinned, for example, by magical ideation, mystical experience, fantasy proneness, absorption, hyperaesthesia). In order to further understand the correlates of suggestibility, the aim of the current project was to investigate whether transliminality is associated with hypnotic and imaginative suggestibility (considering: objective response, subjective response and involuntariness). Another aim was to assess the contribution of transliminality as a pred

Examining Community Clinicians Use of Imaginal Exposure with Childhood Anxiety Disorders.

Although community therapists rarely use exposure when treating youth with anxiety disorders, they are more likely to endorse the use of imaginal exposure, relative to in vivo or interoceptive exposure. Such use of imaginal exposure could reflect a sub-optimal replacement for in vivo exposure or a targeted intervention to address anxiety-provoking thoughts, such as in generalized anxiety disorder. The current study used the survey responses of 178 community-based clinicians to examine these competing hypotheses. The results indicated that therapist endorsement of more clearly defined imaginal

Comparison of clinical and magnetic resonance imagining data of patients with temporomandibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: There are important criteria in the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). These become significant if supported by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Otherwise, these findings alone may not be sufficient to diagnose TMD. AIM: This study compared the relationship between clinical findings indicated by patient and physician and MRI results in the diagnosis of TMD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical examinations were performed in patients suspected of TMD for pain, difficulty in mouth opening, masticatory muscle tenderness, deviation (during mouth opening), normal mouth openi

The Architect Who Lost the Ability to Imagine: The Cerebral Basis of Visual Imagery.

While the loss of mental imagery following brain lesions was first described more than a century ago, the key cerebral areas involved remain elusive. Here we report neuropsychological data from an architect (PL518) who lost his ability for visual imagery following a bilateral posterior cerebral artery (PCA) stroke. We compare his profile to three other patients with bilateral PCA stroke and another architect with a large PCA lesion confined to the right hemisphere. We also compare structural images of their lesions, aiming to delineate cerebral areas selectively lesioned in acquired aphantasia

A shift in perspective: Decentering through mindful attention to imagined stressful events.

Ruminative thoughts about a stressful event can seem subjectively real, as if the imagined event were happening in the moment. One possibility is that this subjective realism results from simulating the self as engaged in the stressful event (immersion). If so, then the process of decentering--disengaging the self from the event--should reduce the subjective realism associated with immersion, and therefore perceived stressfulness. To assess this account of decentering, we taught non-meditators a strategy for disengaging from imagined events, simply viewing these events as transient mental stat

Testing a procedural variant of written imaginal exposure for generalized anxiety disorder.

This experiment examined the degree to which it is more beneficial for individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) to engage in repeated exposure to mental imagery of the same feared scenario versus varying the exposure content. On three consecutive days, individuals with GAD (N=57) spent 20min writing about: (1) the same worst case scenario (consistent exposure; CE), (2) variations of their worst case scenario (varied exposure; VE), or (3) a neutral topic (neutral control; NC). Participants in the CE condition displayed significant decreases in worry, acute cognitive avoidance, and in

Behavioral and neural correlates of imagined walking and walking-while-talking in the elderly.

Cognition is important for locomotion and gait decline increases the risk for morbidity, mortality, cognitive decline, and dementia. Yet, the neural correlates of gait are not well established, because most neuroimaging methods cannot image the brain during locomotion. Imagined gait protocols overcome this limitation. This study examined the behavioral and neural correlates of a new imagined gait protocol that involved imagined walking (iW), imagined talking (iT), and imagined walking-while-talking (iWWT). In Experiment 1, 82 cognitively-healthy older adults (M=80.45) walked (W), iW, walked wh

Ranking fluctuating asymmetry in a dot figure and the significant impact of imagining a face.

Fluctuating asymmetry and averageness is correlated with our perception of beauty in human faces. Yet, whether deviations of centrality in the positioning of the eyes, the nose, and the mouth have different effects on our perception of asymmetry in a holistic human face, is still uncertain. In this study we aimed to test the relative effect of decentralising the horizontal position of three sets of paired dots representing eyes, nostrils, or mouth from the vertical midline of ambiguous dot figures, vaguely resembling a face. The figures were ranked according to perceived asymmetry by human obs

Anger suppression after imagined rejection among individuals with social anxiety.

Individuals experiencing high levels of social anxiety report frequent and intense anger. Yet, little is known about how they manage this emotion. Despite general tendencies towards anger suppression, subsets of individuals with social anxiety regulate anger through outward expression. In this study, we investigated rejection as an antecedent to anger, examined how and when individuals with high social anxiety suppress anger, and evaluated experiential avoidance (EA) as a moderator of the relationship between social anxiety and anger suppression. 170 undergraduate students described their resp

What Bizzozero never could imagine - Helicobacter pylori today and tomorrow.

With the observation of spiral organism in the stomach about one hundred years ago a long history of a bacterium started ending up in a worldwide research programs, studies and consensuses. With this bacterium rediscovered by Marshall and Warren and later named Helicobacter pylori, a milestone of research was laid nearly twenty years ago. Helicobacter pylori is now recognized as the main cause of most cases of gastritis and ulcer disease in the stomach and the duodenum. In the course of the Helicobacter pylori research, Helicobacter pylori was found to trigger neoplastic alterations on the gro

Two distinct Do-Not-Resuscitate protocols leaving less to the imagination: an observational study using propensity score matching.

BACKGROUND: Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) patients tend to receive less medical care after the order is written. To provide a clearer approach, the Ohio Department of Health adopted the Do-Not-Resuscitate law in 1998, indicating two distinct protocols of DNR orders that allow DNR patients to choose the medical care: DNR Comfort Care (DNRCC), implying DNRCC patients receive only comfort care after the order is written; and DNR Comfort Care-Arrest (DNRCC-Arrest), implying that DNRCC-Arrest patients are eligible to receive aggressive interventions until cardiac or respiratory arrest. The aim of this s

From Imagination to Immersion: The Impact of Augmented Reality Instruction on Musical Emotion Processing: An fNIRS Hyperscanning Study.

Background: This study addresses a common challenge in music education: students' limited emotional engagement during music listening. Objectives: This study compared two teaching methods-externally guided augmented reality (AR) integration and internally generated simulation-in terms of their neural and behavioral differences in guiding students' visual mental imagery and influencing their musical affect processing. Methods: Using Chinese Pipa music appreciation as our experimental paradigm, we employed fNIRS hyperscanning to record inter-brain synchronization (IBS) during teacher-student int

The symbol in the body: the un-doing of a dissociation through Embodied Active Imagination in Jungian analysis.

Jung understood dissociation as a natural state of the psyche, capable of turning defensive through development. Based on this premise, and its conception on the equivalence between psyche and matter, the present work describes the un-doing of a dissociation expressed through a chronic enterocolitis disorder. When the symbol remains closer to the body and its most instinctive manifestations, we need to descend to that level in order to let the vertical axis connection be gradually restored through the therapeutic relationship - the horizontal axis. In other words, this un-doing requires that p

The thin line between reality and imagination: attachment orientations and the effects of relationship threats on sexual fantasies.

The authors examined the effects of relationship threats on sexual fantasies. In two studies, participants described a sexual fantasy following an imagination task and reported their attachment orientations. In Study 1, participants imagined relationship or nonrelationship threat scenes. Results indicated that relationship threat led to fantasies that involved interpersonal distance and hostility themes. Furthermore, following relational threat, women and more anxiously attached individuals were most likely to use relationship-maintaining strategies in their fantasies. More anxiously attached

Changes in corticospinal and spinal reflex excitability through functional electrical stimulation with and without observation and imagination of walking.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES), a method for inducing muscle contraction, has been successfully used in gait rehabilitation for patients with deficits after neurological disorders and several clinical studies have found that it can improve gait function after stroke and spinal cord injury. However, FES gait training is not suitable for patients with walking difficulty, such as those with severe motor paralysis of the lower limbs. We have previously shown that action observation combined with motor imagery (AO + MI) of walking induces walking-related cortical activity. Therefore, we co

Pupil dilation as an index of episodic processing when remembering, imagining, and thinking creatively.

Prior research indicates that the cognitive and neural systems supporting the recall of specific past experiences (episodic memory) also play a key role in imagining novel and specific future experiences (episodic simulation), and divergent creative thinking. In particular, constructive memory processes (e.g. retrieval and recombination of specific episodic details) are thought to benefit episodic simulation and divergent thinking. In the current study, we provide a novel test of this hypothesis using eye-tracking. We capitalized on prior eye-tracking and neuroimaging evidence demonstrating th

"Imagine a pregnancy": perspectives of Latine emerging adults from an agricultural community in California.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy perceptions and pregnancy acceptability have been identified as alternative multidimensional constructs to elucidate and integrate people's lived experiences, needs, and goals related to reproduction, pregnancy, and parenting. This study examines the perspectives of Latine emerging adults on a hypothetical pregnancy and what socioecological factors would influence pregnancy-related decisions. METHODS: In a mixed-methods prospective cohort study of emerging adults from an agricultural community in California followed since eighth grade, interviews were conducted with a
