[A case of pemphigus foliaceus associated with bullous impetigo successfully treated with tetracycline and nicotinamide].

A 50-year-old Japanese woman visited our clinic, complaining of generalized erythema with painful erosions and bullae. The histopathological findings of the skin lesion suggested development of impetigo. Gentamycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was detected by the bacterial culture examination from the impetiginous bullae. A direct immunofluorescence study of the lesion showed an intercellular deposition of IgG and C3 in the upper epidermis. We diagnosed this case as pemphigus foliaceus associated with bullous impetigo. A combined oral administration of tetracycline (200 mg/day) and nicotina

Tissue tropisms in group A Streptococcus: what virulence factors distinguish pharyngitis from impetigo strains?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Group A streptococci (GAS) are a common cause of pharyngitis and impetigo, and distinct throat strains and skin strains have been long recognized. This review aims to describe recent advances in molecular differences between throat and skin strains, and the pathogenic mechanisms used by virulence factors that may distinguish between these two groups. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent findings include a new typing scheme for GAS strains based on sequence clusters of genes encoding the entire surface-exposed portion of M protein; correlations between emm-based typing schemes, clinical

Complete genome analysis of two new bacteriophages isolated from impetigo strains of Staphylococcus aureus.

Exfoliative toxin A (ETA)-coding temperate bacteriophages are leading contributors to the toxic phenotype of impetigo strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Two distinct eta gene-positive bacteriophages isolated from S. aureus strains which recently caused massive outbreaks of pemphigus neonatorum in Czech maternity hospitals were characterized. The phages, designated ϕB166 and ϕB236, were able to transfer the eta gene into a prophageless S. aureus strain which afterwards converted into an ETA producer. Complete phage genome sequences were determined, and a comparative analysis of five designed gen

[Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and bullous impetigo in newborn twins infected by breast milk].

Staphylococcus aureus is often responsible for late septic infections, more rarely of toxinic ones, occurring in neonatal period. We report a case of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and bullous impetigo in newborn twins infected by breast milk from their asymptomatic mother. This transmission was confirmed by molecular biology method. This case emphasizes the potential part of the mother in staphylococcal nosocomial infections and the complexity of toxinic mechanisms.

Group A streptococcal pharyngeal carriage, pharyngitis, and impetigo in two northern Canadian native communities.

The prevalence of pharyngeal carriage of group A streptococci, streptococcal pharyngitis, and impetigo was determined in schoolchildren in two northern communities, one Inuit (mean number of schoolchildren surveyed, 233) and one native Indian (mean number of schoolchildren surveyed, 349). At three surveys from November 1984 to May 1985, pharyngeal group A streptococcal carriage was 5.3%, 22%, and 34% in the Inuit community and 5.3%, 5.1% and 10% in the native Indian, with impetigo prevalence 1.6%, 3.8% and 1.0%, and 2.4%, 4.2% and 0.6%, respectively. Increased pharyngeal carriage correlated wi

Impetigo Surgical Site Infection Following Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of a Patella Fracture.

Impetigo is a pediatric skin infection characterized by the presence of pathognomonic "honey-crusted" lesions caused by either Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes. The diagnosis of impetigo is largely based on clinical judgment, confirmatory skin cultures, and Gram staining. Surgical site infections following patellar surgery are a relatively uncommon occurrence, with the most common causative organisms being Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and other gram-negative bacilli. Surgical site infections have a range of risk factors that largely depe

Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim (Cotrimoxazole) for Skin and Soft Tissue Infections Including Impetigo, Cellulitis, and Abscess.

Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) affect millions of people globally, which represents a significant burden on ambulatory care and hospital settings. The role of sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SXT) in SSTI treatment, particularly when group A Streptococcus (GAS) is involved, is controversial. We conducted a systematic review of clinical trials and observational studies that address the utility of SXT for SSTI treatment, caused by either GAS or Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant (MRSA). We identified 196 studies, and 15 underwent full text review by 2 reviewers. Observa

Impetigo in a population over 8.5 years: incidence, fusidic acid resistance and molecular characteristics.

OBJECTIVES: From around year 2000, impetigo caused by fusidic acid-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was observed in countries of Northern Europe. The bacteria were found to represent a clone, the epidemic European fusidic acid-resistant impetigo clone (EEFIC). This study reports longitudinal data on the incidence and bacteriology of impetigo in a Norwegian island community during the years 2001-09. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All encounters with general practitioners regarding impetigo were registered. Bacterial swabs were taken in a high percentage of cases. Annual incidence was calculated. Phenoty

Low prevalence of scabies and impetigo in Dakar/Senegal: A cluster-randomised, cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Scabies, a parasitic infection caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, is a public health problem with significant morbidity worldwide, particularly in low-resource countries. Impetigo, a complication of scabies infection, is a risk factor for sepsis, glomerulonephritis and possibly acute rheumatic fever. Currently, the majority of epidemiological data has been collected in rural populations in the Pacific with limited applicability to urban populations in sub-Saharan Africa, where scabies is also believed to be a problem. To inform future public health programs, more reliable in

Mass drug administration campaigns for scabies and impetigo: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Scabies is recognised as a neglected tropical disease, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable populations around the world. Impetigo often occurs secondarily to scabies. Several studies have explored mass drug administration (MDA) programmes, with some showing positive outcomes-but a systematic evaluation of such studies is yet to be reported. The main aim of this systematic review is to generate comprehensive evidence on the effect and feasibility of MDA programmes in reducing the burden of scabies and impetigo. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A systematic review and meta-analy

Prevalence of Scabies and Impetigo 3 Years After Mass Drug Administration With Ivermectin and Azithromycin.

BACKGROUND: Ivermectin-based mass drug administration has emerged as a promising strategy for the control of scabies and impetigo in settings where the diseases are endemic. Current follow-up data are limited to 12 months for the majority of studies. Longer-term data are vital to inform the sustainability of interventions. METHODS: We conducted a prevalence survey for scabies and impetigo in 10 villages in Choiseul Province of the Solomon Islands 36 months after a single round of ivermectin and azithromycin mass drug coadministration. In the primary analysis, we compared the prevalence of sca

Impetigo Herpetiformis Complicating Pregnancy: A Case Report on a Rare Gestational Dermatosis With Constitutional Symptoms.

Impetigo herpetiformis (IH) is a rare dermatosis that can manifest during the last trimester of pregnancy. It has the potential to cause fatality to both the mother and the fetus. After birth, it often vanishes spontaneously and rapidly. Clinically and histologically, it resembles pustular psoriasis, leading some authors to call it "the pustular psoriasis of pregnancy." Steroids were previously the treatment of choice, but treatment remains challenging. A dermatologist with experience in skin conditions during pregnancy should assess any generalized pustular psoriasis instances. There is a dan
