Mechanochemical treatment of incinerated municipal bottom ash in CO2-rich environment for sustainable waste management practices.

Incineration of the municipal solid waste produces huge amounts of fly and bottom ash annually. Added-value utilization of those ashes has been of great interest to many researchers worldwide. In this line, this study examined incinerated municipal solid waste under various milling conditions and in presence of CO2 environment. Thermogravimetric analysis of samples milled under air atmosphere revealed higher content of portlandite of finer particle size as observed in scanning electron microscopy images. In contrast, samples milled under CO2 environment demonstrated the presence of dolomite th

Pilot-scale evaluation of a novel TiO2-supported V2O5 catalyst for DeNOx at low temperatures at a waste incinerator.

The removal of NOx by catalytic technology at low temperatures is significant for treatment of flue gas in waste incineration plants, especially at temperatures below 200°C. A novel highly active TiO2-supported vanadium oxide catalyst at low temperatures (200-250°C) has been developed for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) de-NOx process with ammonia. The catalyst was evaluated in a pilot-scale equipment, and the results were compared with those obtained in our previous work using laboratory scale (small volume test) equipment as well as bench-scale laboratory equipment. In the present wo

Environmental performance evaluation of large-scale municipal solid waste incinerators using data envelopment analysis.

Limited to insufficient land resources, incinerators are considered in many countries such as Japan and Germany as the major technology for a waste management scheme capable of dealing with the increasing demand for municipal and industrial solid waste treatment in urban regions. The evaluation of these municipal incinerators in terms of secondary pollution potential, cost-effectiveness, and operational efficiency has become a new focus in the highly interdisciplinary area of production economics, systems analysis, and waste management. This paper aims to demonstrate the application of data en

Effect of water-extraction on characteristics of melting and solidification of fly ash from municipal solid waste incinerator.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of water-extraction process on the removal of major elements and heavy metals in the fly ash from Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator (MSWI), and their thermal stability in the following melting process. The water-extraction was first applied to extract soluble elements and heavy metals from the fly ash from MSWI at different liquid-to-solid rates (L/S) of 2, 5, and 10, respectively. The extracted fly ash and the raw fly ash were then melted at the temperatures of 1000-1350 degrees C in an electrically heated furnace. The results showed that the

The behavior of PCDD/Fs, PCBs, chlorobenzenes and chlorophenols in wet scrubbing system of municipal solid waste incinerator.

Though some researchers have already reported polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) concentration in flue gas at inlet and outlet of wet scrubber (WS) in municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI), there are few investigations about scrubbing water, suspended solid (SS) in scrubbing water and sludge. In order to understand the behavior of PCDD/Fs in WS and to make clear the effect of the residence time of scrubbing water in WS on the PCDD/Fs concentrations in scrubbing water and at the outlet gas of WS, PCDD/Fs, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), chlorobenz

[Spatial Distribution and Source Analysis of Heavy Metals in Multiple Environmental Media Around a Waste Incineration Plant in Jiangxi, China].

Heavy metals surrounding waste incineration plants undergo cross-media migration and enrich in the soil-water system, resulting in a systematic deterioration of the physical and chemical properties of the soil and posing potential hazards to the ecological environment and human health. Taking the heavy metals in the soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater around a waste incineration plant in Jiangxi Province as the research objects, descriptive statistical analysis was conducted on the contents (or concentrations) of heavy metals in multi-media. The spatial distribution characteristics

Research on the recovery and purification of lead ions from the aqueous leachate of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash.

The incineration of municipal solid waste generates a significant amount of MSWIFA, which poses environmental risks due to its high chlorine and lead content, hindering its resourceful utilization. Firstly, water washing is used to remove chlorine and heavy metals from the MSWIFA, followed by a combination of CO2 aeration and acid leaching to recover lead from the aqueous leachate and purify the lead in the CO2 precipitate. According to the research results, the MSWIFA from waste incineration was pre-treated with a single water washing at 500 r/min with a liquid-to-solid ratio of 5 for 10 min.

Supporting the investigation of health outcomes due to airborne emission by different approaches: current evidence for the waste incineration sector.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) along with a survey on epidemiologic and oxidative potential studies was used for analysing the current evidence of the impact of airborne emissions from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) on human health. The correspondence among investigated health outcomes and pollutants was discussed based on the Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). LCA indicated the ability of MSWI in avoiding human health impact, about - 2 × 10-4 DALY/tonne together with avoided emissions of particulate matter (PM) and resource depl

Waste incineration of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to evaluate potential formation of per- and Poly-Fluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) in flue gas.

In recent years, concerns over some per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) have grown steadily. PFAS are a large group of chemical substances with widely differing properties. While one class of PFAS, fluoropolymers, have been demonstrated to meet the OECD criteria for polymers of low concern during the in use phase of their lifecycle, questions remain regarding waste handling at the end of useful life for products containing fluoropolymers. To show that polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) can be almost fully transformed into fluorine (F) (as hydrofluoric acid (HF)) and to study the possi

Synergistic removal of Hg0, HCl, and SO2 from flue gas in municipal solid waste incineration by mechanically modified fly ash.

The emissions of flue gas components (such as Hg0, SO2, HCl) and the generation of hazardous waste fly ash from municipal waste incineration pose a significant threat to environmental integrity. In this study, a mechanochemical method combined with a modifier is innovatively proposed for the modification of fly ash to remove Hg0. In the fixed bed adsorption experiment, the removal efficiency of up to 60 percent can be achieved by ball milling (700rap,30min) alone. The modification of fly ash by mechanical force coupling with pyrite can achieve Hg0 removal efficiency is increased to more than 9

A novel and sustainable technique to immobilize lead and zinc in MSW incineration fly ash by using pozzolanic bottom ash.

Fly ash (FA) generated from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incineration contains high leaching potential of toxic metals. Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is the main hydration product of cement and can immobilize the leaching of toxic metals, formed by the reaction of Ca with pozzolanic Si in a highly alkaline environment. Toxic metals can be immobilized by the addition of pozzolan to FA residues (in lieu of cement), which is a source of Ca and provides an alkaline condition. The current study proposed a new approach of reusing the fine-fraction of MSW incineration bottom ash (BA), which contain

Phosphorus recovery from incinerated sewage sludge ash using electrodialysis coupled with plant extractant enhancement technology.

Phosphorus (P) is an integral mineral nutrient for the growth of plants and animals. As the increasing population worldwide, the demand for P resources keeps increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to recover P from secondary resources. Unlike conventional P recovery processes, this work focused on the recovery of P from incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) using electrodialysis as the main technology coupled with plant extractants. In this study, Amaranthus and hydrolyzed polymaleic anhydride (HPMA) were used as P extractants, investigating the effects of HPMA concentration and pH of the compo

Mortality and morbidity among people living close to incinerators: a cohort study based on dispersion modeling for exposure assessment.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have been conducted on the possible health effects for people living close to incinerators and well-conducted reviews are available. Nevertheless, several uncertainties limit the overall interpretation of the findings. We evaluated the health effects of emissions from two incinerators in a pilot cohort study. METHODS: The study area was defined as the 3.5 km radius around two incinerators located near Forlì (Italy). People who were residents in 1/1/1990, or subsequently became residents up to 31/12/2003, were enrolled in a longitudinal study (31,347 individuals). A

Relationship between pressure fluctuations and generation of organic pollutants with different particle size distributions in a fluidized bed incinerator.

The hydrodynamic behaviors of fluidization perhaps significantly influence the uniformity of fluidization in fluidized bed incinerator. Good uniformity of fluidization expressed the air across uniformly through the bed and the particles being distributed well in the fluid stream. The aggregates, flocs and channels of particles do not happen during fluidization. The Good uniformity will maintain high heat and mass distribution to improve reaction efficiency. These parameters include the height of static bed, gas velocity, mixing and distribution of bed particle, which have rarely been studied i

Incineration of biomass and utilization of product gas as a CO2 source for crop production in closed systems: gas quality and phytotoxicity.

This study addressed the recycle of carbon from inedible biomass to CO2 for utilization in crop production. Earlier work identified incineration as an attractive approach to resource recovery from solid wastes because the products are well segregated. Given the effective separation of carbon into the gaseous product stream from the incinerator in the form of CO2 we captured the gaseous stream produced during incineration of wheat inedible biomass and utilized it as the CO2 source for crop production. Injection rate was based on maintenance of CO2 concentration in the growing environment. The c

Occurrence and leaching of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in waste incineration residues: Insights into thermodynamic mechanisms and implications for environmental release.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been detected in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) residues, but their precursor contributions, leaching mechanisms, and release potentials remain unclear. Here, 21 PFAS were analyzed in fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA) from five MSWI plants in China. Mean Σ21PFAS concentrations were 75.8 ng·g-1 in FA and 38.4 ng·g-1 in BA, exceeding previous reports. Short-chain and alternative PFAS predominated, with HFPO-DA (GenX) occurring at 2.5-29.1 ng·g-1 and accounting for 3.7%-44.4% of Σ21PFAS. The total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay indicated

Synthesizing LiFePO4 by phosphate & iron recovered from sludge-incinerated ash and Li extracted from concentrated brines.

Phosphorus (P) recovered from sludge-incinerated ash (SIA) could be applied to synthesize highly added-value products (FePO4 and LiFePO4) with in situ Fe in SIA. Indeed, LiFePO4 is a future of rechargeable batteries, which makes lithium (Li) highly needed. Alternatively, Li could also be extracted from concentrated brines to face a potential crisis of Li depletion on lands. Based on H3PO4 and Fe3+ co-extracted from the acidic leachate of SIA by tributyl phosphate (TBP), FePO4 (31.2 wt% Fe, 17.6 wt% P and the molar ratio of Fe/P = 0.98) was easily formed only adjusting pH of the stripping solut
