Exceptional properties of hyper-resistant armor of a hydrothermal vent crab.

Animals living in extreme environments, such as hydrothermal vents, would be expected to have evolved protective shells or exoskeletons to maintain homeostasis. The outer part of the exoskeleton of vent crabs (Austinograea sp.) in the Indian Ocean hydrothermal vent was one of the hardest (approximately 7 GPa) biological materials ever reported. To explore the exoskeletal characteristics of vent crabs which enable them to adapt to severe environments, a comparative analysis was conducted with the Asian paddle crab (Charybdis japonica) living in coastal areas. Nanoindentation, thermogravimetric

Review of the Lepadichthys lineatus complex (Gobiesocidae: Diademichthyinae) with descriptions of three new species.

The Lepadichthys lineatus complex (Gobiesocidae: Diademichthyinae) is defined by three unique characters within Lepadichthys: (a) upper-jaw lip fused with snout skin, usually lacking a distinct groove between the dorsal lip margin and snout (if present, very weak, restricted to posterior portion of jaw); (b) snout tip well extended, distinctly beyond lower-jaw tip; and (c) inner surface of both lips with oral papillae. A taxonomic review of the complex recognized four valid species: Lepadichthys geminus sp. nov. (southern Japan and Indonesia), Lepadichthys heemstraorum sp. nov. (southwestern I

Models for predicting the transport of radionuclides in the Red Sea.

Two radionuclide transport models for the Red Sea are described: a Lagrangian model to deal with emergency situations and a Eulerian model better suited to longer term simulations, as for instance required in case of chronic radionuclide releases. Baroclinic circulation is obtained for both transport models from HYCOM ocean model. The Lagrangian model also includes tides, which are obtained from a standard tidal model customized to the Red Sea, and currents induced by local winds. Both models describe exchanges of radionuclides between water and sediments. A number of simulations were carried

Redescription of Pseudolepidapedon balistis Manter, 1940 and a biological variant (Trematoda: Acanthocolpidae) from the Red Sea fishes; Balistoides viridescens and Rhinecanthus assasi.

During a survey of Red Sea fish parasites, two trematodes belonging to the genus Pseudolepidapedon Yamaguti, 1938 were encountered: P. balistis Manter, 1940 was found in the small intestine of the fish Balistoides viridescens and was redescribed for the first time from Egypt; adding many detailed morphological and ultrastructural characters. The second trematode was found in the small intestine of the fish Rhinecanthus assasi and found to represent a biological variant of the previous species as it differs from it in its generally smaller dimensions, shape of suckers and pharynx and the testes

Novel polyhydroxysterols from the Red Sea marine sponge Lamellodysidea herbacea.

Chemical investigation of the dichloromethane extract of the Red Sea marine sponge Lamellodysidea herbacea led to the isolation of four novel polyhydroxysteroids: cholesta-8-en-3beta,5alpha,6alpha,25-tetrol (1), cholesta-8(14)-en-3beta,5alpha,6alpha,25-tetrol (2), cholesta-8,24-dien-3beta,5alpha,6alpha-triol (3), and cholesta-8(14),24-dien-3beta,5alpha,6alpha-triol (4). Their structures were identified through 1D and 2D NMR studies. Relative stereochemistries were established by analysis of chemical shifts, coupling constants, and NOESY correlations. Compounds 3-4 showed antifungal activity ag

Local and non-local energy transfers in eddy-mean flow interactions along the Indonesian throughflow.

How local energy conversion and non-local redistribution jointly shape eddy activity along the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) remains unclear. Using long-term, eddy-resolving ocean model output, we diagnose exchanges among mean and eddy kinetic and available potential energy along the ITF and its adjacent basins. The results reveal a marked change in the dominant energy pathway. At the Pacific entrance and along the western ITF, eddies gain energy primarily through barotropic conversion associated with the sheared mean current. Farther downstream, baroclinic conversion becomes more prominent nea

Two new species of Tetragonocephalum (Cestoda: Lecanicephalidea) from Pastinachus sephen (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae) from the Gulf of Oman.

In the present study two new species of Tetragonocephalum Shipley et Hornell, 1905, T. mackenziei sp. n. and T. kazemii sp. n., are described from the spiral intestine of the cowtail stingray, Pastinachus sephen (Forsskål), from the northern coast of the Gulf of Oman. Tetragonocephalum mackenziei is distinguished from the 16 other valid species of Tetragonocephalum by a unique combination of characteristics, i.e. sperm-filled seminal receptacle in immature proglottids, body length (7.7-17.5 mm), body width (213-288 µm), number of proglottids (34-49), number of testes (10-14), size of scolex (2

A denitrifying community associated with a major, marine nitrogen fixer.

The diazotrophic cyanobacterium, Trichodesmium, is an integral component of the marine nitrogen cycle and contributes significant amounts of new nitrogen to oligotrophic, tropical/subtropical ocean surface waters. Trichodesmium forms macroscopic, fusiform (tufts), spherical (puffs) and raft-like colonies that provide a pseudobenthic habitat for a host of other organisms including marine invertebrates, microeukaryotes and numerous other microbes. The diversity and activity of denitrifying bacteria found in association with the colonies was interrogated using a series of molecular-based methodol

Description of three new species of Echinobothrium (Cestoda: Diphyllidea) from Indo-Pacific elasmobranchs of the genus Glaucostegus (Rajiformes: Rhinobatidae).

Three new species of diphyllidean cestodes are described from rhinobatid elasmobranchs of the genus Glaucostegus from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. All 3 new species have 11 apical hooks (6 type-A and 5 type-B hooks) and, therefore, differ in this feature from all but 5 of the 39 valid species of Echinobothrium. In addition, Echinobothrium tetabuanense n. sp. from Glaucostegus cf. typus in the Sulu Sea, Borneo differs from all of its congeners in the number and arrangement of hooklets, number of spines on the cephalic peduncle, and the number and distribution of testes. Morphological variability, ultrastructure and molecular characterisation of Hysterothylacium reliquens (Norris & Overstreet, 1975) (Nematoda: Raphidascarididae) from the oriental sole Brachirus orientalis (Bloch & Schneider) (Pleuronectiformes: Soleidae).

Hysterothylacium reliquens (Norris & Overstreet, 1975), a common ascaridoid nematode parasitic in the marine fishes in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, has been reported to exhibit remarkable morphological variability in the lengths of body, oesophagus and spicules, and the number and arrangement of postcloacal papillae. In order to determine whether H. reliquens with a broad range of morphological variability in the above-mentioned respects, represents a complex of sibling species or a single species, and to evaluate if the specimens of H. reliquens collected from the Indian and Atlantic Ocean

Pleistocene isolation and recent gene flow in Haliotis asinina, an Indo-Pacific vetigastropod with limited dispersal capacity.

Haliotis asinina is a broadcast-spawning mollusc that inhabits Indo-Pacific coral reefs. This tropical abalone develops through a nonfeeding larval stage that is competent to settle on specific species of coralline algae after 3-4 days in the plankton. Failure to contact an inductive algae within 10 days of hatching usually results in death. These life cycle characteristics suggest a limited capacity for dispersal and thus gene flow. This makes H. asinina particularly suitable for elucidating phylogeographical structure throughout the Indo-Malay Archipelagoes, and eastern Indian and western Pa

Surgeons and suture zones: Hybridization among four surgeonfish species in the Indo-Pacific with variable evolutionary outcomes.

Closely related species can provide valuable insights into evolutionary processes through comparison of their ecology, geographic distribution and the history recorded in their genomes. In the Indo-Pacific, many reef fishes are divided into sister species that come into secondary contact at biogeographic borders, most prominently where Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean faunas meet. It is unclear whether hybridization in this contact zone represents incomplete speciation, secondary contact, an evolutionary dead-end (for hybrids) or some combination of the above. To address these issues, we conduct

Cryptic diversity in Indo-Pacific coral-reef fishes revealed by DNA-barcoding provides new support to the centre-of-overlap hypothesis.

Diversity in coral reef fishes is not evenly distributed and tends to accumulate in the Indo-Malay-Philippines Archipelago (IMPA). The comprehension of the mechanisms that initiated this pattern is in its infancy despite its importance for the conservation of coral reefs. Considering the IMPA either as an area of overlap or a cradle of marine biodiversity, the hypotheses proposed to account for this pattern rely on extant knowledge about taxonomy and species range distribution. The recent large-scale use of standard molecular data (DNA barcoding), however, has revealed the importance of taking

Review of Lyme Borreliosis in Africa-An Emerging Threat in Africa.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is more common in the Northern Hemisphere. It is endemic mainly in North America, where the vectors are Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus, and in Eurasia, where the vectors are Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus. Both tick-borne diseases and LB are influenced by climate change. Africa and South America are crossed by the equator and are situated in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. In Africa, the LB is present on the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean coasts. Borrelia lusitaniae is prevalent in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, such as Tunisia,

Integrating spectral signatures and microbial profiling to differentiate diseased and healthy corals in the Red sea.

Coral reef ecosystems face increasing threats from microbial diseases, especially those induced by bacterial infections. Conventional diagnostic techniques often require invasive sampling, extended processing time and are limited in their spatial applicability. Spectral reflectance analysis offers a non-invasive means for detecting subtle physiological alterations associated with coral disease; however, its application in characterizing microbiological changes remains largely unexplored. This research aimed to differentiate healthy from diseased coral colonies by analyzing the spectral fingerp
