Dynamic associations between mothers' and fathers' parenting behaviors and infant physiological emotion regulation.

Emotion regulation (ER) is a key developmental process shaped through parent-infant interactions, during which parents and infants dynamically co-regulate the infant's emotions. Successful co-regulation depends on parents' sensitivity to the infant's emotional cues; unadjusted parental responses, such as intrusiveness or withdrawal, can dysregulate the infant, reflected in physiological indicators such as heart rate (HR). Although research has advanced understanding of infant ER, most studies have focused on mothers and dyadic contexts and primarily compared infant HR during stressful versus n

Sociodemographic Characteristics and Behavioral Outcomes in Infants With Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Treated With Therapeutic Hypothermia.

BACKGROUND: In infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) treated with therapeutic hypothermia, the frequency, characteristics, and social risk factors for atypical behavior are poorly understood. METHODS: Secondary analysis of the High-Dose Erythropoietin for Asphyxia and Encephalopathy (HEAL) trial. Atypical behavior defined as >= one clinically significant behavior on the parent-reported Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) at age two years. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between atypical behavior and sociodemographic, maternal, and infant factors. RESULTS: Am

Postdischarge Nutrition of Preterm Infants: Breastfeeding, Complementary Foods, Eating Behavior and Feeding Problems.

In preterm infants, the key goals of nutrition are to establish adequate growth and to contribute to appropriate neurodevelopmental outcome. In this context, the postdischarge period is crucial to establish catch-up growth and avoid wrong metabolic programming caused by overfeeding. Breastfeeding is strongly recommended, and for preterm infants the European Society for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) suggests fortifying breastmilk after discharge up to term in appropriate growing infants and up to 3 months in growth-retarded infants. If breastfeeding is not possible, post

Neurodevelopmental and emotional-behavioral outcomes in late-preterm infants: an observational descriptive case study.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, several studies investigated the outcomes in children born very preterm. Only recently there has been an increasing interest in the late preterm infants (born between 34 + 0 and 36 + 6 weeks). This population is at high risk of morbidity and mortality in the first years of life. Other studies reported that they are also at risk of long-term developmental problem. Therefore, the aim of this study is to describe the neurodevelopmental and emotional-behavioral outcome in a sample of late preterm patients. METHODS: The study included late preterm children and ado

Temporal Association Between Reflux-like Behaviors and Gastroesophageal Reflux in Preterm and Term Infants.

OBJECTIVES: Multichannel intraluminal impedance studies (MII-pH) have become the criterion standard for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Several clinical signs and symptoms that are attributed to GER during infancy may not be related to true reflux. Our objective was to correlate the observed reflux-like behaviors to reflux events on MII-pH studies. METHODS: This is a retrospective study on infants being evaluated for GER with MII. During the MII-pH study, the infants were observed for clinical behaviors. Symptom Index (SI), symptom sensitivity index (SSI), and symptom associat

Developmental and behavioral status of infants and young children awaiting heart or heart-lung transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: Research into cognitive development and behavior in children undergoing heart or heart-lung transplantation has focused mainly on older children, with investigation of children undergoing transplantation as infants or toddlers being largely retrospective. This study was conducted, therefore, to obtain pretransplant baseline measures of development and behavior for preschool-aged children. METHODS: Children <3.5 years old were assessed before transplantation (n = 35) and compared with a group of children awaiting conventional cardiac surgery, a group undergoing bone marrow transplan

Behaviors of preterm infants with and without chronic lung disease when alone and when with nurses.

Many clinicians believe that infants with chronic lung disease display more irritability and react more negatively to care than other preterm infants. Therefore, the sleep-wake states and behaviors displayed by 31 high-risk preterm infants without chronic lung disease and 20 infants with chronic lung disease during four-hour observations conducted in intermediate care between 32 and 36 weeks postconceptional age were compared. Separate analyses were conducted for times when infants were alone and when they were with nurses to determine whether behavioral differences might be greater during han

Evidence-Based Identification of Key Beliefs Explaining Infant Male Circumcision Motivation Among Expectant Parents in Zimbabwe: Targets for Behavior Change Messaging.

Slow adult male circumcision uptake is one factor leading some to recommend increased priority for infant male circumcision (IMC) in sub-Saharan African countries. This research, guided by the integrated behavioral model (IBM), was carried out to identify key beliefs that best explain Zimbabwean parents' motivation to have their infant sons circumcised. A quantitative survey, designed from qualitative elicitation study results, was administered to independent representative samples of 800 expectant mothers and 795 expectant fathers in two urban and two rural areas in Zimbabwe. Multiple regress

Prediction of mechanical behavior of cartilaginous infant hips in pavlik harness: A subject-specific simulation study on normal and dysplastic hips.

In dysplastic infant hips undergoing abduction harness treatment, cartilage contact pressure is believed to have a role in therapeutic cartilage remodeling and also in the complication of femoral head avascular necrosis. To improve our understanding of the role of contact pressure in the remodeling and the complication, we modeled cartilage contact pressure in cartilaginous infant hips undergoing Pavlik harness treatment. In subject-specific finite element modeling, we simulated contact pressure of normal and dysplastic hips in Pavlik harness at 90° flexion and gravity-induced abduction angles

Validity and reliability of the Behavior Problems Inventory, the Aberrant Behavior Checklist, and the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised among infants and toddlers at risk for intellectual or developmental disabilities: a multi-method assessment approach.

Reliable and valid assessment of aberrant behaviors is essential in empirically verifying prevention and intervention for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). Few instruments exist which assess behavior problems in infants. The current longitudinal study examined the performance of three behavior-rating scales for individuals with IDD that have been proven psychometrically sound in older populations: the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC), the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01), and the Repetitive Behavior Scale - Revised (RBS-R). Data were analyzed for 180 betwe

Effects of early-life abuse differ across development: infant social behavior deficits are followed by adolescent depressive-like behaviors mediated by the amygdala.

Abuse during early life, especially from the caregiver, increases vulnerability to develop later-life psychopathologies such as depression. Although signs of depression are typically not expressed until later life, signs of dysfunctional social behavior have been found earlier. How infant abuse alters the trajectory of brain development to produce pathways to pathology is not completely understood. Here we address this question using two different but complementary rat models of early-life abuse from postnatal day 8 (P8) to P12: a naturalistic paradigm, where the mother is provided with insuff

Validating the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales-Developmental Profile Infant-Toddler Checklist (CSBS-DP ITC) Beyond Infancy in the CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder.

CDKL5 deficiency disorder (CDD) results in early-onset epilepsy and lifelong cognitive and motor impairments. With no validated measure for communication in CDD, this study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales-Developmental Profile Infant Toddler Checklist (CSBS-DP ITC). Caregivers (n = 150; affected individuals aged 1-29 years) completed the CSBS-DP ITC. Distribution of scores indicated a floor effect. There was poor divergent validity for the three-factor model but goodness of fit and convergent validity data were satisfactory for the one-fa

Effects on the behavior of infant common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) of separation from caregivers and of drug-induced reduction in caregiver responsiveness.

The effects of separating 4-week-old twin marmosets for 8 days from their families are compared with the effects of leaving 4-week-old infants with their families, but reducing the responsiveness of their caregivers for 8 days by administration of the tranquilizer fluphenazine decanoate. Both treatments reduce infant mobility, abolish play, and increase the time that infants spend with each other. During the period after the termination of the treatment, both treatment groups continue to play and move less than controls, and try to climb onto the mothers more frequently. These results are cons

Relationships among feeding method, maternal behavior during feeding, and mother-infant bonding at 1 year postpartum: the Japan Environment and Children's Study.

We investigated how feeding methods and maternal behaviors during feeding influence mother-infant bonding at 1 year postpartum using data from 80,394 mother-child pairs in the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Bonding, feeding methods, maternal behaviors during feeding, and covariates were obtained from questionnaires and medical records. Modified Poisson regression estimated associations between feeding-related factors and bonding outcomes. At 1 year postpartum, 11.0% (n = 8,822) of mothers showed poor bonding. Mothers who talked to and looked at their child during feeding had a lower r
