Micronutrient intake and food insecurity among mothers of infants with orofacial clefts: a cross-sectional study in Iran.

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate is a common congenital craniofacial anomaly influenced by genetic and environmental factors. This cross-sectional study investigated maternal micronutrient intake and household food insecurity among Iranian mothers of infants with orofacial clefts. Mothers of infants aged 0-12 months with cleft lip (CL), cleft palate (CP), or both were recruited from a referral hospital in Tehran (2019-2020). Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and food security was evaluated with a standardized instrument. Multinomial logistic regr

Acute tree nut-triggered food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome in two infants: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy characterised by delayed repetitive vomiting and can be difficult to distinguish from infectious illness or even an IgE-mediated allergy. Tree nuts are uncommon but increasingly recognised triggers, and evidence regarding atypical FPIES with concomitant IgE sensitisation remains limited. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe two infants with severe acute reactions to tree nuts who were managed at a paediatric allergy centre. The first, a boy with eczema and cow's milk allergy, developed reproducible

Baby Food Pouches, Baby-Led Weaning, and Iron Status in New Zealand Infants: An Observational Study.

Iron deficiency in infants can impact development, and there are concerns that the use of baby food pouches and baby-led weaning may impair iron status. First Foods New Zealand (FFNZ) was an observational study of 625 New Zealand infants aged 6.9 to 10.1 months. Feeding methods were defined based on parental reports of infant feeding at "around 6 months of age": "frequent" baby food pouch use (five+ times per week) and "full baby-led weaning" (the infant primarily self-feeds). Iron status was assessed using a venepuncture blood sample. The estimated prevalence of suboptimal iron status was 23%

A review of dairy food intake for improving health among black infants, toddlers, and young children in the US.

Adequate nutrition is paramount for proper growth and musculoskeletal, neurocognitive, and immunological development in infants, toddlers, and young children. Among breastfeeding mother-child dyads, this critical window of development, is impacted by both maternal and offspring dietary patterns. For mothers, their dietary patterns impact not only their own health and well-being, but also the nutrition of their breast milk - which is recommended as the sole source of food for the first 6 months of their infant's life, and as a complementary source of nutrition until at least 2 years of age. For

Feeding patterns and growth trajectories in breast-fed and formula-fed infants during the introduction of complementary food.

Introduction: several investigations have identified breastfeeding as a protective factor for rapid infant weight gain and childhood obesity while other studies have found that this protective effect could be the result of confounding factors. Objectives: to assess the associations between lactation practices (breast-fed vs formula-fed infants) during the introduction of complementary food period, as well as the following: a) patterns of food intake; and b) trajectories of growth at six, nine and 12 months (z-score of weight, height and body mass index [BMI] and changes in these z-scores from

Risk assessment for infants exposed to furan from ready-to-eat thermally processed food products in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Thermal processes and long storage of food lead to reactions between reducing sugars and amino acids, or with ascorbic acid, carbohydrates or polyunsaturated fatty acids. As a result of these reactions, new compounds are created. One of these compounds having an adverse effect on human health is furan. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to estimate the infants exposure to furan found in thermally processed jarred food products, as well as characterizing the risk by comparing the exposure to the reference dose (RfD) and calculating margins of exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The

A micronutrient-fortified food enhances iron and selenium status of Zambian infants but has limited efficacy on zinc.

Micronutrient-fortified, cereal-based infant foods are recommended for reducing multiple micronutrient deficiencies in low-income countries, but their nutritional quality is not always optimal. In a double-blind randomized trial, we compared the efficacy of a locally produced porridge based on maize, beans, bambaranuts, and groundnuts fortified with 19 (rich) or 9 (basal) micronutrients. Infants aged 6 mo from Lusaka, Zambia were randomized to receive the richly fortified (n = 373) or basal (n = 370) porridge daily for 12 mo along with routine vitamin A supplements. Baseline and final micronut

Food safety practices among pregnant women and mothers in the women, infants, and children program, Miami, Florida.

Pregnant women and infants are two groups at the highest risk of severe outcomes from foodborne illnesses. We surveyed adult clients of a Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clinic serving predominately African Americans in inner-city Miami, Florida, to assess food safety practices. Eligible and consenting women completed a 23-item self-administered survey with questions concerning food handling practices around the Partnership for Food Safety Education's Fight BAC! campaign constructs of "clean", "separate" (not cross-contaminated), "cook", and "chill". Of 342 eligible clients, 299 (87.4%) con

Effects of age at introduction of complementary foods to breast-fed infants on duration of lactational amenorrhea in Honduran women.

Lactational amenorrhea (LA) is associated with postpartum infertility and is known to be related to breast-feeding frequency and duration, but the exact role of complementary feeding of the infant has not been clearly defined. Data on LA were collected during and after a 2-mo intervention trial in which low-income Honduran women who had breast-fed fully for 4 mo were randomly assigned to one of three groups: continued full breast-feeding until 6 mo (FBF, n = 50), introduction of complementary foods at 4 mo with ad libitum breast-feeding from 4 to 6 mo (SF, n = 47), or introduction of complemen

Evaluation of a revised U.S. Food and Drug Administration method for the detection of Cronobacter in powdered infant formula: a collaborative study.

A revised U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) method for the isolation and detection of Cronobacter from powdered infant formula was recently developed, which combines real-time PCR, chromogenic agars, and RAPID ID 32E biochemical tests. This method provides an expedient analysis within 24 to 48 h. A collaborative validation study involving four different laboratories was conducted to compare the revised FDA method with the reference FDA method using casein- and soy-based powdered infant formula inoculated with different Cronobacter strains. Valid results from 216 test portions and control

Investigation of nitrate and nitrite in commercially available infant formulas and baby foods in Iran and estimation of human health risks.

Levels of harmful nitrogen-containing substances have increased in many foods and drinks around the world. The impacts of dietary nitrate and nitrite on human health have been controversial topics for many years. The present study aimed to quantify the levels of nitrate and nitrite in infant formulas and baby foods sold in Iran and to estimate non-carcinogenic human health risk from exposure to these substances. The samples were gathered randomly and subsequently analyzed to detect nitrate and nitrite via Spectrophotometry. The ranges of nitrate and nitrite in the infant formulas were 0.221-1.

Modulation of the enzyme-like activity of CuAsp nanozyme by gallic acid and the selective detection of bisphenol A in infant food packaging.

The activity modulation of nanozymes with multi-enzymatic activities has both opportunities and challenges in practical applications. In this study, we found firstly that gallic acid erosion had a significant inhibitory effect on the peroxidase-catalyzed colorimetric reaction process of copper aspartate nanozyme prepared based on aspartic acid and copper (CuAsp), and the laccase-like catalytic activity remained almost unchanged. A sensing strategy for bisphenol A was then developed based on the laccase-like activity of GA-CuAsp synthesized by gallic acid (GA) acid erosion of CuAsp, which may h

Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis in infants is associated with low serum levels of macrophage inflammatory protein-3a.

BACKGROUND: Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is a nonimmunoglobulin (IgE)-mediated food hypersensitivity and the exact mechanisms that cause FPIAP are unknown. Chemokines play crucial roles in the development of allergic diseases. OBJECTIVE: To examine serum levels of a group of chemokines in infants with FPIAP. METHODS: In 67 infants with FPIAP and 65 healthy infants, we measured serum levels of mucosa-associated epithelial chemokine (MEC/CCL28), thymus-expressed chemokine (TECK/CCL25), CX3CL1 and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-3a/CCL20. RESULTS: Infants with FPIA

MILK Symposium review: The importance of milk and dairy foods in the diets of infants, adolescents, pregnant women, adults, and the elderly.

The ongoing increase in life expectancy is not always accompanied by an increase in healthy life span. There is increasing evidence that dietary exposure in early life can substantially affect chronic disease risk in later life. Milk and dairy foods are important suppliers of a range of key nutrients, with some being particularly important at certain life stages. It is now recognized that milk protein can stimulate insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), essential for longitudinal bone growth and bone mass acquisition in young children, thus reducing the risk of stunting. Low milk consumption du
