A 32 year-old woman was hospitalised with severe septic symptoms. The examination of the patient revealed placenta residues in the woman's uterus as cause of the infection. The police was called and investigated her apartment in search of the missing baby. Finally, the bodies of two newborn babies were found in the freezer. According to the mother, the babies were stillborn twins. The autopsy revealed that the smaller, moderately putrefied child was stillborn, while the larger infant showed typical signs of drowning and only slight putrefaction. The placenta was judged by gynaecologists to be

INTRODUCTION: Brexanolone demonstrates short-term efficacy for the treatment of postpartum depression (PPD). Postpartum depression is linked to infanticide and maternal suicide, and current treatment often fails to adequately control depressive symptoms. The purpose of this analysis is to further understand the experience(s) of women who have received brexanolone for the treatment of PPD.
METHODS: Semistructured interviews modeled after the theory of planned behavior (TPB) were conducted to assess women's perceptions of treatment for PPD with brexanolone. Women who received treatment with bre

To outline the recent features of child and elderly victims from the medico-legal perspective with special reference to abuse and neglect, a retrospective investigation of forensic autopsy cases over a 5 year period (1994-1998) in the southern half of Osaka city and surrounding areas (a population of 1.57 million) was undertaken. Among 646 autopsy cases, there were 53 child cases (under the age of 15 years, about 80% below 6) and 121 elderly cases (65 years old and above). Nearly half of the child deaths and more than half of the elderly deaths were described as accidental. Fire and traffic vi

OBJECTIVES: Using judicial files on neonaticides, (1) to examine the frequency of the association between neonaticide and denial of pregnancy; (2) to assess the accuracy of the concept of denial of pregnancy; (3) to examine its usefulness in programs to prevent neonaticides.
METHODS: Quantitative and qualitative analyses of data collected from judicial files during a population-based study carried out in 26 courts in 3 regions of France over a 5-year period.
RESULTS: There were 32 cases of neonaticides identified; 24, perpetrated by 22 mothers, were solved by police investigation. Aged 26 ye

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal depression affects 17.7% of women globally, with prevalence reaching 20-30% in China and higher in low-income regions. It poses severe risks, including adverse pregnancy outcomes, maternal suicide, and infanticide. Despite its high prevalence, many cases go undiagnosed due to low screening participation. Screening is cost-effective and reduces depression risk by 2.1-9.1%, yet current strategies often fail to align with patient preferences. In this study, a discrete choice experiment was utilized to assess women's preferences for postpartum depression screening character

Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA), formerly known as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, is a rare form of abuse where parents induce or fabricate symptoms in their child, exposing them to unnecessary and potentially harmful medical treatments. In over 90% of cases, the perpetrators are mothers. A father was put on trial for the murder of his three-month-old daughter and was eventually convicted of repeatedly inducing respiratory crises, ultimately causing her death. Investigations began after multiple visits to the Emergency Department for respiratory episodes reported by the father but

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant cause of maternal morbidity and has severe consequences on the well-being of mothers, new-borns, families, and communities. PPD reduces the mother's response to the child's needs. In severe cases, mothers suffering from PPD are prone to postpartum psychosis, commit suicide and, in rare cases, infanticide. We aimed to determine the prevalence and understand the factors associated with PPD among mothers in southwestern Uganda.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study between November 2019 and June 2020 among 292 mothers, 6 to 8 weeks' po

Stepparents commit filicide at higher rates than do genetic parents. According to M. Daly and M. I. Wilson (1994), motivational differences generate differences in the methods by which stepparents and genetic parents kill a child. Using Canadian and British national-level databases, Daly and Wilson (1994) found that stepfathers were more likely than genetic fathers to commit filicide by beating and bludgeoning, arguably revealing stepparental feelings of bitterness and resentment not present to the same degree in genetic fathers. Genetic fathers, in contrast, were more likely than stepfathers

A 14-year-old girl was found unconscious in a pool of blood by her mother in the family bathroom. A gynecological emergency operation revealed a state after spontaneous delivery. A few days later the corpse of a newborn, smeared with blood, was found by the father of the girl in a laundry basket in the bathroom. The autopsy revealed signs of blunt force against the cranium as well as multiple lesions caused by sharp force in the area of the neck and the thorax. The newborn died of hemorrhagic shock due to severance of the left subclavian artery. The pattern of injuries is presented. In additio

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major depressive disorder that most often emerges within 6 to 12 weeks of delivery, but can happen any time up to 1 year after birth. In developed countries, the incidence of postnatal depression is about 10-15% in adult women depending upon the diagnostic criteria, timing of screening and screening instruments used. Mothers with depressive symptoms have been found to have more complex behavioral contacts with their children; this situation can damage family relationships, and even leads to infanticide. Various pathophysiologies are proposed for postpartum depr

It is known that concealed and denied pregnancy are both associated with increased health risks to the mother and infant. Whilst there is literature surrounding management and safeguarding in these instances, we are not aware of a case review of post-mortem findings in infants with a history of concealed or denied pregnancy. We performed a retrospective review of all coronial post-mortems performed between 2003 and 2018 on infants and fetuses with a history of concealment or denial of pregnancy. Maternal demographics, delivery information, post-mortem findings and results of ancillary investig

Meerkats are group-living, insectivorous herpestids in which subordinate members provide extensive care for the dominant female's young. In contrast to some cooperative breeders, subordinate female meerkats are physiologically able to reproduce and occasionally do so successfully; their attempts are more frequently 'suppressed' via eviction or infanticide by the dominant female. Spontaneous abortion and neonatal loss occur with some regularity, further negatively impacting reproductive success. Here, we compared the reproductive outcomes and endocrine profiles, including of serum progesterone

The recent conceptualisation of bipolar disorder as a neuroprogressive illness has highlighted the potential importance of prevention and early intervention in high-risk populations. Undiagnosed bipolar disorder early in the disease course is associated with adverse clinical outcomes and impaired functioning for patients, which in turn has economic consequences. Despite the mounting evidence that childbirth is one of the most potent and specific triggers of manic symptoms, studies are not available on the effectiveness of targeted interventions in the prevention of bipolar disorder in women wh

BACKGROUND: Every two minutes a woman dies from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Most maternal deaths occur within the first 24 hours following birth, highlighting the importance of immediate postnatal care (iPNC). Self-care strategies are increasingly being employed to promote women-centred, continuous care provision. Despite international calls for development of strategies promoting self-care, none have been developed for self-monitoring in the immediate postnatal period. Fundamental to the development of a self-monitoring strategy, is an understanding of which signs and symptoms

There is a dearth of literature on the extent of fetal or newborn abandonment or "dumping" and the medico-legal investigation procedures these cases require. This is despite the fact that these occurrences are a worldwide phenomenon and by definition involve criminal law concerns such as illegal abortion, concealment of birth, murder, or neonaticide, depending on the country concerned. This article contributes to current literature in both respects and provides a retrospective case audit for the period 2004-2008 pertaining to all abandoned newborns and fetuses admitted to the Pretoria Medico-L

BACKGROUND: Fresh intrapulmonary and oronasal haemorrhages in cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) might be markers for accidental or intentional smothering inappropriately diagnosed as SIDS.
AIM: To compare the incidence, epidemiological association, and inter-relation of nasal haemorrhage, intrapulmonary haemorrhage, and intrathoracic petechiae in infant deaths certified as SIDS.
METHODS: In SIDS cases from a large nationwide case-control study, a wide range of variables were compared in cases with and without reported nasal haemorrhage and, in a subgroup of cases, in those with an

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health conditions are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth (1 in 8 women). When left untreated, perinatal depression and anxiety adversely affects the entire family with pregnancy complications and negative outcomes including preterm birth, impaired mother-infant bonding, impaired lactation, substance abuse, divorce, suicide, and infanticide. Significant disparities persist in the diagnosis and treatment of perinatal depression and anxiety and these inequities are often intersectional. Preliminary research with stakeholders including community a
