Epigenetic Phosphorylation Control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection and Persistence.

Reversible protein phosphorylation is the most common type of epigenetic posttranslational modification in living cells used as a major regulation mechanism of biological processes. The Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome encodes for 11 serine/threonine protein kinases that are responsible for sensing environmental signals to coordinate a cellular response to ensure the pathogen's infectivity, survival, and growth. To overcome killing mechanisms generated within the host during infection, M. tuberculosis enters a state of nonreplicating persistence that is characterized by arrested growth, limit

Asymptomatic Leishmania infection: a new challenge for Leishmania control.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a serious parasitic disease, causing high morbidity and mortality in the developing world. The pathogenesis of VL is complex, and the clinical presentation ranges from asymptomatic infection to severe and fatal disease. Despite a wealth of research on the full-blown "clinical VL" syndrome, asymptomatic leishmania infections remain poorly understood. Asymptomatic infection could present a major challenge for control programs if its infectiousness is confirmed. In this viewpoint, we highlight the crucial knowledge gaps as well as the obstacles in research on asympt

Latent Toxoplasma gondii infection leads to improved action control.

The parasite Toxoplasma gondii has been found to manipulate the behavior of its secondary hosts to increase its own dissemination which is commonly believed to be to the detriment of the host (manipulation hypothesis). The manipulation correlates with an up-regulation of dopaminergic neurotransmission. In humans, different pathologies have been associated with T. gondii infections but most latently infected humans do not seem to display overt impairments. Since a dopamine plus does not necessarily bear exclusively negative consequences in humans, we investigated potential positive consequences

Taenia ovis infection and its control: a Canadian perspective.

Distributed worldwide, Taenia ovis infection is responsible for the condemnation of sheep carcasses in many countries. This review highlights the programme used in New Zealand to successfully control T. ovis in sheep, and discusses how similar approaches may be modified for use in Canada, given what is currently known about the epidemiology of T. ovis. The lifecycle of the parasite is well known, involving dogs as the definitive host and sheep or goats as the intermediate host. An effective vaccine does exist, although it is not presently commercially available. In New Zealand an industry-base

IL-21 is required to control chronic viral infection.

CD4+ and CD8+ T cell functions are rapidly aborted during chronic infection, preventing viral clearance. CD4+ T cell help is required throughout chronic infection so as to sustain CD8+ T cell responses; however, the necessary factor(s) provided by CD4+ T cells are currently unknown. Using a mouse model of chronic viral infection, we demonstrated that interleukin-21 (IL-21) is an essential component of CD4+ T cell help. In the absence of IL-21 signaling, despite elevated CD4+ T cell responses, CD8+ T cell responses are severely impaired. CD8+ T cells directly require IL-21 to avoid deletion, ma

New strategies for control of respiratory syncytial virus infection.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To report on recent progress on the development and implementation of a vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), on investigations of the mechanism of action of prophylactic antibodies and the potential for increased efficacy of those antibodies, and on candidate antiviral drugs against RSV. RECENT FINDINGS: Follow-up data from RSV live attenuated vaccine trials in naïve infants and young children strengthen the view that live attenuated vaccines will not predispose to exacerbated pneumonia upon natural infection. Data on the age distribution of RSV disease from t

The management of ballistic trauma: an infection control perspective.

This article discusses the relationship between ballistic trauma, clostridial contamination and potential wound infection and considers the implications for care by nurses and infection control teams. An overview of ballistics is presented followed by an examination of the pathophysiology of wounding and its effects. The philosophy of war surgery is balanced against civilian concepts and the differing management strategies that prevail. It explores the causes of, and relationship between, wound contamination and the seriousness of wound infection. Nurses, inexperienced in dealing and caring fo

Infection control for SARS in a tertiary neonatal centre.

The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is a newly discovered infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus, which can readily spread in the healthcare setting. A recent community outbreak in Hong Kong infected a significant number of pregnant women who subsequently required emergency caesarean section for deteriorating maternal condition and respiratory failure. As no neonatal clinician has any experience in looking after these high risk infants, stringent infection control measures for prevention of cross infection between patients and staff are important to safeguard the wellbeing o

Nail art: a review of current infection control issues.

Nail art or nail technology is a form of nail decoration which frequently entails applying extensions to the natural nail and then adding decorative effects. There have been a number of outbreaks of infection which have implicated nail art. These infections are likely to be as a result of difficulties in cleaning and maintaining the nail extensions. Nail art appears to be incompatible with clinical care.

[Infection control in dentistry. II.: Disinfection od dental handpieces].

The effectiveness of three different kind of sterilization or disinfection procedures was investigated in case of contaminated turbine handpieces. The results demonstrated that formaldehyde, isopropyl-alcohol and ethylenoxid are equally effective to disinfect or sterilize handpieces. The isopropyl-alcohol solving in pure ethyl-alcohol is one of the material which complies most of the requirements, as described by the authors.

Community infection ratio as an indicator for tuberculosis control.

The epidemiology of tuberculosis remains poorly understood. We investigated the relative importance of within-household and community transmission of infection among children aged 6 months to 14 years living in a Peruvian shanty-town. The prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis exposure among 175 contact children (sharing a household with a person who had confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis) and 382 control children (living in nearby households free of active tuberculosis) was defined as the proportion of children with a positive purified protein derivative (PPD) skin-test. 97 (55%) contact chil

Infection control in intensive care units: U.K. national survey.

A completed questionnaire was returned by 246 (85%) intensive care units participating in a national survey of infection control practice in intensive care. Thirty-three units had no provision for isolating patients in single side wards. Sixty percent of responding ICU had fewer than one washbasin per bedspace. Several units reported using ventilator filters or tubing more frequently than is currently recommended. Excessive numbers of catheter urine specimens were sent for laboratory examination by some units. A small number of units used open urinary drainage systems. A significant proportion

Iron Oxide-Based Magnetic Nanoparticles in Oral Infection Control.

In oral infectious diseases, recalcitrant biofilms, escalating antibiotic resistance, and limitations of local drug delivery within complex anatomical microenvironments necessitate innovative strategies for effective and precise therapy. Among magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), iron oxide-based nanoparticles (IONPs) have attracted considerable attention in the management of oral infectious diseases because of their unique physicochemical features, including magnetic responsiveness, tunable morphology, and favorable biocompatibility. These properties enable MNPs to exert multimodal antibacterial ef
