Absence of HIV antibody among dental professionals exposed to infected patients.

Dental professionals have relatively frequent skin contact with saliva and small amounts of blood of patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Despite this exposure, none of 255 dentists, hygienists and chairside assistants had the antibody to HIV following an estimated 189 or more exposures. These data provide further evidence that casual contact with the saliva of HIV-infected persons, such as may occur in households, the workplace or in public places, is unlikely to result in transmission of HIV to uninfected persons. Because of the small sample size in this study, howe

Dental and oral hygiene student's knowledge of HIV infection and AIDS.

A survey was conducted to assess the knowledge of 30 oral hygiene (OH I & II) and 79 dental students (BCHD III & VI) on HIV infection and AIDS. A questionnaire consisting of twenty-nine questions based on the 'agree-disagree' format was prepared for this study. Clinical slides were projected to assess students' ability to identify oral manifestations of HIV infection. Most students agreed that HIV-sero-positive people were entitled to the same dignity and respect as those who were suffering from other illnesses. Students were concerned about treating sero-positive patients. They would preferab

Endodontic treatment of odontogenic infection in a patient at risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: a case report and review of treatment criteria.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is an uncommon and severe condition in patients who are receiving treatment with antiresorptive and/or antiangiogenic drugs, which are frequently used to treat or prevent cancer metastases. The treatment of MRONJ is challenging because the choice of a specific dental treatment depends on several factors, including the systemic condition of the patient, type and dosage of medications, and clinical and radiographic characteristics of the dental lesions. This case report describes the conservative endodontic treatment of an odontogenic infection

Osmunda japonica Extract Suppresses Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines by Downregulating NF-κB Activation in Periodontal Ligament Fibroblasts Infected with Oral Pathogenic Bacteria.

Periodontal diseases are caused by bacterial infection and may progress to chronic dental disease; severe inflammation may result in bone loss. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent bacterial infection or control inflammation. Periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLFs) are responsible for the maintenance of tissue integrity and immune and inflammatory events in periodontal diseases. The formation of bacterial complexes by Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis is crucial in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. F. nucleatum is a facultative anaerobic species, considered to be a

Applications of robot-assisted UV disinfection in dentistry.

Maintaining a microbial-free environment in healthcare facilities is more widely recognized as an essential component of therapies to minimize transmission of viruses associated with healthcare sector. The global spread of COVID-19 and recent outbreaks have presented humanity with previously unheard-of challenges. The development of autonomous disinfection robots seems to be necessary given the urgent need for constant sterilization in the face of a labor shortage. Due to their automated and perceived cost advantages by eliminating cleaning staff, these robots are being advertised more and mor

Medication of the dental pulp: a review and proposals.

For years, dentists have desired to treat the intact dental pulp. Since it is well-known that many substances, including some drugs, are capable of permeating dentin, we believe it is possible to treat certain types of pulpitis by applying drugs at the base of cavity preparations. Useful drugs include local anesthetics to block pain transmission, glucocorticoids or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIA) to treat inflammation, NSAIA or narcotic analgesics for pain control, and antibiotics to treat infection. The literature is reviewed and proposals are presented to study medication of t

Association between Helicobacter pylori and recurrent aphthous stomatitis in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common disease with unknown etiology. Helicobacter pylori has been shown to be the causative factor in peptic ulcers. Considering the similarities of histologic features between gastric and oral ulceration, we studied the possible involvement of H. pylori in the development of RAS. METHODS: A total of 105 children and adolescents were investigated--53 patients with RAS (case group) and 52 patients without lesions (control group). Specimens obtained by swabbing RAS lesions, intact oral mucosa, and dental plaque were submitted to a polyme

Use of Antimicrobial Nanoparticles for the Management of Dental Diseases.

Dental diseases represent a significant global health concern, with traditional treatment methods often proving costly and lacking in long-term efficacy. Emerging research highlights nanoparticles as a promising, cost-effective therapeutic alternative, owing to their unique properties. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the application of antimicrobial and antioxidant nanoparticles in the management of dental diseases. Silver and gold nanoparticles have shown great potential for inhibiting biofilm formation and thus preventing dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis.

Dental management of the pediatric oncology patient.

Acute oral problems that frequently occur during oncologic therapy include mucositis, infection, and hemorrhage. Certain chemotherapeutic agents consistently produce significant mucositis. Herpes simplex virus infection is a frequent cause of oral ulceration. Gram-negative oral bacilli can cause severe local necrosis of oral tissues and lethal bacteremia and sepsis. Sepsis with oral streptococci is common in the early postengraftment period following bone marrow transplant. A case report describes the successful use of a new hemostatic agent to control hemorrhage in a patient with severe throm

Operative stewardship: reclaiming the role of surgical source control in dental antimicrobial stewardship.

Dentistry accounts for approximately 10% of all antibiotic prescriptions globally, with evidence consistently demonstrating that the majority of these prescriptions are inappropriate. Current dental antimicrobial stewardship programs are defined almost exclusively around prescribing behavior-optimizing antibiotic choice, dose, and duration. This pharmacological framing, while necessary, is structurally incomplete. It overlooks the primary clinical intervention that renders antibiotics unnecessary in the first place: surgical source control through incision and drainage or tooth extraction. In

[Relationship between odontogenic infections and infective endocarditis].

Revised guidelines for the prevention of infective endocarditis published by national and international associations in the last years do not support the indiscriminate use of antibiotic prophylaxis for dental procedures. However, some of them still recommend its use in high-risk patients before dental treatments likely to cause bleeding. Given the high prevalence of bacteremia of dental origin due to tooth-brushing, mastication or other daily activities, it appears unlikely that infective endocarditis from oral microorganisms can be completely prevented. A good oral health status and satisfac

Odontogenic infections in the etiology of infective endocarditis.

Revised guidelines for the prevention of infective endocarditis published by the American Heart Association in 2007 do not support the indiscriminate use of antibiotic prophylaxis for dental procedures. However, they still recommend the use of prophylaxis for high-risk patients before dental treatments likely to cause bleeding. Given the high prevalence of bacteremia of dental origin due to tooth-brushing, mastication or other daily activities, it appears unlikely that infective endocarditis from oral microorganisms can be completely prevented. Oral manifestations and dental management in patients undergoing CAR-T cell therapy: a retrospective observational study.

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy has emerged as a highly effective treatment for refractory and relapsed hematologic malignancies. Despite its clinical benefits, CAR-T therapy is associated with a unique toxicity profile, including cytokine release syndrome (CRS), immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS), and prolonged immunosuppression. Oral complications in this population remain underreported. This retrospective case series was aimed at describing oral manifestations and dental management in patients undergoing CAR-T therapy at a tertiary referral cente

Knowledge of the human immunodeficiency virus among final year dental students.

A sound basis of knowledge about HIV infection and AIDS is essential to allow students to develop as dentists who undertake appropriate measures during clinical practice. In addition, it is also likely that possessing appropriate information may instil confidence in their own ability to diagnose and then manage patients infected by HIV. A questionnaire designed to test the knowledge of final year dental students in the UK was completed by 60.5% of students in 15 out of the 16 dental schools in the UK. Generally, the students rated the teaching they had received about cross-infection precaution
