Exposure to inhalable dust of workers shackling birds frequently exceeds occupational exposure level in abattoirs in Western France.

1. The objectives of this study were to measure the exposure of workers to dust when shackling poultry in abattoirs, and to identify the most effective measures to prevent human exposure to dust. The relationship between respiratory health of workers and their occupational exposure to dust was assessed. 2. Exposure to dust (aerial particles inhaled through the nose and mouth) exceeded the occupational exposure limit (maximum 10 mg/m3 over 8 h) in 65 out of 109 workers from 27 abattoirs, in the context of high levels of ambient aerial dust in small, closed shackling cubicles. The association between inhaled tire-wear particle exposure and cognitive dysfunction in rats.

Tire wear particles (TWPs), an emerging environmental contaminant, have poorly understood impacts on cognitive function and underlying mechanisms. Herein, environmental samples from main traffic arteries were analyzed to determine TWPs concentrations, based on which Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated into control, low-TWPs, and high-TWPs exposure groups. An exposure model of TWPs was established in Sprague-Dawley rats by continuous nose and mouth inhalation of TWPs for 14 and 28 days. The experimental results demonstrated that TWPs induced multiple adverse effects in rats, primarily manifested

Using social media to highlight inhaled occupational exposures as a cause of lung disease.

INTRODUCTION: The risks to lung health from workplace hazards remain incompletely understood and may still be overlooked by workers, employers and healthcare professionals. We used an online tool to collect European population-based data relating to workplace exposures, training and lung health. METHODS: A targeted industry-specific digital tool, enquiring about the link between respiratory symptoms and work, was made accessible online over a 24-month period. RESULTS: 22 393 individuals (mean age 43.6 years) responded; 55.7% were female, 46.7% completed in English, 19.9% in Portuguese, 17.8%

Repeated Iron-Soot Exposure and Nose-to-brain Transport of Inhaled Ultrafine Particles.

Particulate exposure has been implicated in the development of a number of neurological maladies such as multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Only a few studies have focused on the olfactory pathway as a portal through which combustion-generated particles may enter the brain. The primary objective of this study was to define the deposition, uptake, and transport of inhaled ultrafine iron-soot particles in the nasal cavities of mice to determine whether combustion-generated nanoparticles reach the olfactory bulb via the olfa

Dose-Response Modeling for Inhalational Anthrax in Rabbits Following Single or Multiple Exposures.

There is a need to advance our ability to characterize the risk of inhalational anthrax following a low-dose exposure. The exposure scenario most often considered is a single exposure that occurs during an attack. However, long-term daily low-dose exposures also represent a realistic exposure scenario, such as what may be encountered by people occupying areas for longer periods. Given this, the objective of the current work was to model two rabbit inhalational anthrax dose-response data sets. One data set was from single exposures to aerosolized Bacillus anthracis Ames spores. The second data

Management of a Patient With Faciocervical Burns and Inhalational Injury Due to Hydrofluoric Acid Exposure.

Hydrofluoric acid, a highly dangerous substance, can cause tissue damage and systemic toxicity by its unique mechanisms. Many cases of severe faciocervical burns due to hydrofluoric acid exposure are lethal. Herein, we present a case of 37-year-old man who suffered from hydrofluoric acid burns to his face, anterior neck, lips, and nasal cavity. On admission, this patient coughed with much sputum, and the chest auscultation detected rough breath sounds, wheezes, and very weak heart sounds, indicating possible inhalation injury. This case highlights the extreme complexity of managing this kind o

Immunotoxicologic effects of inhaled chromium: role of particle solubility and co-exposure to ozone.

Soluble and insoluble hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) agents are concomitantly released with ozone (O3) during welding. Although pulmonary/immunologic implications from exposure to each agent individually have been investigated, the effects from simultaneous exposure, as occurs under actual working conditions, are unclear. To investigate immunomodulatory effects of inhaled Cr6+, F-344 rats were exposed for 5 h/day, 5 days/week for 2 or 4 weeks to atmospheres containing soluble potassium chromate (K2CrO4) or insoluble barium chromate (BaCrO4), each alone at 360 micrograms Cr/m3 or in combination wit

Effects of acute and chronic exposure to nicotine aerosol on bronchial reactivity to inhaled methacholine.

Normal baboons, like humans, demonstrate a wide range of bronchial reactivity to inhaled methacholine. Cigarette-smoking baboons demonstrate reduced bronchial reactivity to inhaled methacholine compared with sham-smoking controls after 6 pack-yr of smoking. To evaluate the role of nicotine in this blunting of airway reactivity, we studied the effects of both acute and chronic nicotine inhalation on reactivity to methacholine in baboons. Inhalation of 2 mg of nicotine had no acute effect on lung function but blunted bronchial reactivity in highly reactive animals. This effect was not diminished

A pharmacokinetic model to study the excretion of trichloroethylene and its metabolites after an inhalation exposure.

For a better understanding of absorption, distribution, excretion, and metabolism of trichloroethylene the time-course of blood concentration of the vapour and urinary excretion of its metabolites was examined using a pharmacokinetic model. After a single experimental exposure in which four men inhaled 100 parts per million (ppm) of trichloroethylene for four hours an elimination curve showed three exponential components, that is, X=1-0005e(-16.71t)+0-449e(-1.710t)+0-255e(-0.2027t), where X is that blood concentration in mg/l and t the time in hours from 0 to 10. Hexavalent chromium inhalation exposure induces metabolic reprogramming underlying lung injury and partial endogenous repair in mice.

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a pervasive toxicant in occupational and environmental settings, posing significant respiratory risks, yet the metabolic mechanisms underpinning its pulmonary toxicity and repair remain unclear. In this study, C57BL/6 J mice underwent 28 days of whole‑body inhalation exposure to aerosolized 150 μg/m³ Cr(VI), followed by a two‑week unassisted recovery. Blood chromium (Cr) levels were quantified using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Lung function, inflammatory cells of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and histopathology were assessed alongside un

Pulmonary evaluation of whole-body inhalation exposure of polycarbonate (PC) filament 3D printer emissions in rats.

During fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing with polycarbonate (PC) filament, a release of ultrafine particles (UFPs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) occurs. This study aimed to determine PC filament printing emission-induced toxicity in rats via whole-body inhalation exposure. Male Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to a single concentration (0.529 mg/m3, 40 nm mean diameter) of the 3D PC filament emissions in a time-course via whole body inhalation for 1, 4, 8, 15, and 30 days (4 hr/day, 4 days/week), and sacrificed 24 hr after the last exposure. Trace endotoxin in reclaimed water is only one of the risk sources in subchronic inhalation exposure.

Pulmonary injury and inflammation have been detected in cases of subchronic inhalation exposure to reclaimed water, but the mechanism remains unclear. Endotoxin has been verified as the key risk factor in acute inhalation exposure through the TLR4 (Toll-like receptor 4) signalling pathway. In long-term exposure, endotoxin may also be a risk factor in reclaimed water, but the contribution of other health risk factors should not be underestimated. Wild-type C57BL/6J and TLR4-signalling-pathway-defective mice were used in this study to assess the risk of subchronic inhalation exposure to reclaime

Excretion characteristics and tissue accumulation of tetrabromobisphenol-A in male rats after sub-chronic inhalation exposure.

Tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) is an emerging organic pollutant and a commonly used brominated flame retardant that has received much attention owing to its toxicity. Although TBBPA is ubiquitously detected in atmospheric particulate matter and dust, few studies have investigated the sub-chronic inhalation exposure to TBBPA. To further understand the excretion characteristics and tissue accumulation of TBBPA after inhalation exposure, we used the rat model to conduct a sub-chronic inhalation exposure study. Male rats were administered with different doses of aerosol TBBPA (12.9, 54.6, 121.6, an

Hepatotoxic effects of inhalation exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on lipid metabolism of C57BL/6 mice.

Inhalation from ambient air and cigarette smoke is a common route of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Little information is available regarding hepatotoxicities of inhaled PAHs so for. In this study, we evaluated the toxic effects of intratracheally instilled benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) on hepatic lipid metabolism of C57BL/6 mice at relevant environmental exposure levels by using two different mass-based lipidomics approaches. The results of mass spectrometry imaging analysis showed that both the abundance and spatial distribution of several lysophosphatidylcholine (LysoPC

Acute inhalation injury with evidence of diffuse bronchiolitis following chlorine gas exposure at a swimming pool.

A previously healthy 23-year-old man with nonproductive cough and sore throat presented to the hospital a few hours after chlorine gas exposure at a fitness center swimming pool. Initial physical examination and chest radiograph were normal. Thirty-six hours later he developed worsening dyspnea and cough, with development of blood-tinged sputum. Arterial blood gas analysis showed mild hypoxemia and a subsequent chest radiograph demonstrated diffuse tiny nodular opacities. Findings on a thin-section computed tomogram of the chest were consistent with diffuse bronchiolitis. Pulmonary function te

Mid-frequency hearing loss in rats following inhalation exposure to trichloroethylene: evidence from reflex modification audiometry.

The present experiments were undertaken to characterize the hearing loss associated with 1,1,2-trichloroethylene (TCE) exposure. Adult male Long-Evans (LE) rats were exposed to TCE via inhalation (whole body) for 6 h/day for 5 days. The concentration-effect function (0-4000 ppm) was determined 3 weeks post-exposure. Animals were tested for auditory thresholds to 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, and 40-kHz tones using reflex modification audiometry. In a separate experiment, the time course of effects was determined by monitoring 16-kHz thresholds prior to, 1 h following each of the 5 exposure days, and 5 day
