Intramuscular innervation patterns of the splenius capitis and splenius cervicis and their clinical implications for botulinum toxin injections.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to clearly characterize the intramuscular nerve distributions of the splenius capitis and splenius cervicis muscles that are both responsible for the onset of a chronic tension type headache and to use this information to identify the effective botulinum toxin (BoNT) injection sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten splenius capitis and splenius cervicis specimens were subjected to Sihler's staining to reveal intramuscular nerve arborization patterns and determined the optimal location for BoNT injection. RESULTS: Nerve distribution patterns in the splen

Two Sudden and Unexpected Deaths of Patients with Schizophrenia Associated with Intramuscular Injections of Antipsychotics and Practice Guidelines to Limit the Use of High Doses of Intramuscular Antipsychotics.

Intravenous haloperidol has been associated with torsades de pointes (TdP). These two sudden deaths were probable adverse drug reactions (ADRs) following intramuscular (IM) antipsychotics. The autopsies described lack of heart pathology and were highly compatible with the possibility of TdP in the absence of risk factors other than the accumulation of antipsychotics with a high serum peak after the last injection, leading to death within hours. The first case was a 27-year-old African-American male with schizophrenia but no medical issues. His death was probably caused by repeated IM haloperid

Abdominal Necrotizing Fasciitis Secondary to the Intramuscular Injection of Permethrin: An Uncommon Case Presentation.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe, rapidly progressing bacterial infection. We report a unique case in a 40-year-old woman with schizophrenia who developed necrotizing fasciitis after self-injecting permethrin intramuscularly into the lower abdomen. The patient presented with abdominal pain, fever, and a fluid collection on computed tomography. Surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy were performed, resulting in a favorable clinical evolution. The case suggests that permethrin induced local toxicity and tissue damage. Early diagnosis, prompt surgical intervention, and prevention of toxic s

Hypokalemic paralysis following intramuscular betamethasone injection: A case report and review of literature.

Acute neuromuscular paralysis is a relatively common condition in emergency rooms (ERs). They can be caused by several reasons, including adverse drug reactions. Betamethasone is a glucocorticoid commonly used for various conditions, such as allergic conditions. One of the rare but known side effects of glucocorticoids is hypokalemia. Rare cases of hypokalemia following high- and low-dose glucocorticoid injections have been reported. This study presents the history of a young, healthy male without significant past medical history who presented with an inability to stand and walk due to four-li

Pharmacokinetics and Safety of Intramuscular Injectable Benzathine Penicillin G in Japanese Healthy Participants.

An intramuscular (IM) suspension of benzathine penicillin G (BPG) has been used as first-line therapy for the treatment of syphilis worldwide since its approval in the 1950s. However, there are limited reports about the pharmacokinetics of BPG. A Phase 1 study was conducted on eight Japanese healthy participants to investigate the pharmacokinetics (samples collected predose to 648 h post-dose) and safety of 2.4 million units of BPG after a single IM injection. Following administration, penicillin G, the active moiety of BPG, was absorbed slowly from the injection site with a median time to Cma

Renal functional and structural alterations induced by intramuscular injection of Bothrops leucurus venom.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is the main cause of death from Bothrops snakebite. Although many studies have investigated the nephrotoxicity induced by other Bothrops species, no study has assessed the renal alterations induced by intramuscular (i.m.) injection of Bothrops leucurus venom. In this study, we evaluated the nephrotoxicity induced by B. leucurus venom by analyzing renal function and histology. Wistar rats were submitted to i. m. injection of B. leucurus venom or saline and divided into two groups: Control group (C), rats submitted to i. m. injections of saline, and B. leucurus group (B

Mechanically resilient injectable scaffolds for intramuscular stem cell delivery and cytokine release.

A promising strategy for treating peripheral ischemia involves the delivery of stem cells to promote angiogenesis through paracrine signaling. Treatment success depends on cell localization, retention, and survival within the mechanically dynamic intramuscular (IM) environment. Herein we describe an injectable, in situ-gelling hydrogel for the IM delivery of adipose-derived stem/stromal cells (ASCs), specifically designed to withstand the dynamic loading conditions of the lower limb and facilitate cytokine release from encapsulated cells. Copolymers of poly(trimethylene carbonate)-b-poly(ethyl

Aseptic myonecrosis following intramuscular benzathine penicllin G injection: a novel syndrome.

We report a novel syndrome of aseptic myonecrosis in a child occurring after intramuscular (IM) benzathine penicillin G injection for the treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis. Common side effects of IM injection, including transient injection site pain and inflammation, are common and well described. However, isolated myonecrosis following IM injection in the pediatric patient has not been previously reported. Only one similar case, following IM diclofenac injection, has been discussed in the adult literature.

Inducible production of erythropoietin using intramuscular injection of block copolymer/DNA formulation.

BACKGROUND: We have previously shown that intramuscular injection of plasmid DNA formulated with a non-ionic amphiphile synthetic vector [poly(ethylene oxide)(13)-poly(propylene oxide)(30)-poly(ethylene oxide)(13) block copolymer; PE6400] increases reporter gene expression compared with naked DNA. We have now investigated this simple non-viral formulation for production of secreted proteins from the mouse skeletal muscle. METHODS: Plasmids encoding either constitutive human secreted alkaline phosphatase or murine erythropoietin inducible via a Tet-on system were formulated with PE6400 and int

[Sciatic paralysis after a buttock intramuscular injection in children: an ongoing risk factor].

Intramuscular injections are regularly recommended for the administration of certain drugs in children. This article underlines the fact that buttock intramuscular injection risks injury to the sciatic nerve, which may lead to lower limb palsy, most often presenting as paralytic drop foot. This condition rarely results from direct traumatic lesion of the sciatic nerve, but usually from the caustic effect of the injected drug. It may occur in older children and adolescents, as well as in infants and younger children. Therefore, the buttocks should not be used as an intramuscular injection site

Respiratory arrest following intramuscular ketamine injection in a 4-year-old child.

A healthy 4-year-old boy presented to the pediatric emergency department after inserting a black-eyed pea into his right external ear canal. Initial attempts at removal of this foreign body were unsuccessful, resulting in patient agitation. After administration of intramuscular ketamine for sedation, the patient was observed to experience one ineffective respiration followed by a period of apnea. No excessive oropharyngeal secretions or laryngospasm were noted. Spontaneous respirations resumed after 40 seconds, and the child recovered with no apparent ill effects. This case illustrates the nee

Intramuscular injection of chlorpromazine decreases intraocular pressure by lowering systemic blood pressure.

Intramuscular injection of chlorpromazine in rabbits caused a significant decrease in intraocular pressure (IOP). The dose-response curve was generated. The threshold dose was 0.1 mg/kg (approximately 0.35 mg per rabbit) and 10 mg/kg chlorpromazine produced the maximal response which lasted for several hours. This decrease in IOP was not due to the release of pituitary prolactin by a central dopaminergic-2 antagonistic activity of chlorpromazine. Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of chlorpromazine also caused a decrease in IOP. The threshold dose was 0.33 mg per rabbit. This high i.c.
