Transmission of human malaria is a complicated dynamic process that involves populations of humans, parasites, and vectors. The first mathematical models of malaria are now more than a century old, and they are still a useful conceptual synthetic description of transmission, but they fail in some important ways. To address some of those failures, malaria transmission models have now been extended to consider malaria immunity, superinfection, and heterogeneous biting, among other factors. These extensions of the basic theory often arise from field studies in a single place, but tests of the the

Despite the existence of an impressive body of work on human immune responses against filarial infections, the occurrence of a protective response to infection remains unclear. Here, we use a combined modelling and comparative data analysis framework to address this issue for human infections with the filarial parasite, Wuchereria bancrofti. By analogy with previous work, the analysis involves the comparison of observed field patterns of infection with epidemiological patterns predicted by a mathematical model of parasite immunity. Unlike most other human helminths, which are transmitted by in

OBJECTIVE: To clarify some biological behaviors of Plasmodium vivax including the periodical infectivity of gametocytes for mosquitoes, the prepatent period, the incubation period, the relapse patterns and their relationship.
METHODS: Laboratory reared Anopheles sinensis were fed through fetal membrane on blood from patients naturally infected with vivax malaria. After feeding at different hours, the engorged mosquitoes kept in the insectarium were dissected 5-7 days later. The percentage of mosquitoes infected and the mean number of oocysts per gut were taken as criteria of the viability of

A 2-year study of the ecology of mosquitos was conducted in a rice-growing area in the Philippines. Forty-four species in 8 genera were collected using 6 techniques, with Culex vishnui being most abundant. Of all the Anopheles collected, most species were exophagic, while most of the Culex species collected were endophagic. Anthropophilic or zoophilic feeding patterns were estimated using man-to-animal biting ratios. Peak periods of mosquito abundance occurred several months after the onset of both the rainy season and the rice irrigation period. Seasonal populations of the more abundant speci

An index for experimental transmission of filariasis infection was first introduced by Kartman and subsequently modified by Wharton who defined it as 'the number of infective larvae per mosquito when the microfilaria count is 1.0 mm-3 of human blood'. Since mosquitoes may not imbibe the expected number of microfilariae from the donor's blood during feeding because of various interference phenomena and/or mechanisms, this paper presents the index mosquito meal (Index MM), based on the actual number of viable microfilariae that are observed in the mosquito gut immediately after feeding. The Inde

Epinephrine can be lifesaving in episodes of anaphylaxis, yet it is underprescribed and underused. Tracking of epinephrine refills over time for patients with a diagnosis of anaphylaxis has not been reported. This study reports on the refill history of 14,677 patients in a large HMO who received an initial dispensing of EpiPen (Dey Pharma, Basking Ridge, NJ) or EpiPen Jr between 2000 and 2006. A total of 6,776 (46%) refilled at least once. Twenty-five percent of the patients who were in the cohort for 5 years or more refilled multiple times, and 11% refilled consistently at all expected refill

In China, the spread of the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren, RIFA) exhibits a consistent pattern of expansion from the south to the north, with decreasing severity toward northern regions. The rapid spread of RIFA poses a substantial public health threat in China, particularly in regions where this invasive species has become established. To evaluate the health risks associated with RIFA stings in China, we analyzed the probability of developing various symptoms following RIFA stings using 8,749 representative cases with detailed symptom descriptions recorded between 2004 and 2

A 54-year-old male patient presented for medical attention with right eyelid swelling and visual loss for half a month following a wasp sting to his right eye. His chief complaints included visual loss in the right eye, accompanied by ocular redness, pain, and lacrimation. Ophthalmic examinations revealed severe visual impairment, eyelid edema, and conjunctival hyperemia in the right eye. The cornea, anterior chamber, iris, and lens were all affected, and the fundus was not visible. Auxiliary examinations showed ciliary body detachment, severe vitreous opacity, and suspected exudative retinal

In the past decade, there has been a global resurgence of bed bug infestations, especially in developed countries. Proper awareness and identification of bed bug infestations are essential to guide treatment and eradication. The purpose of this article is to familiarize physicians with bed bug bites so that they can effectively diagnose, treat, and address questions about bed bug bites and infestations. Bed bug bites are often painless. Typical reactions include pruritic, erythematous maculopapules occurring in clusters or in a linear or curvilinear distribution in exposed areas of the body. A

Insect bites and bite wounds are quite common and most often have mild repercussions in humans. Statistics on the incidence of accidents caused by insects are not available, and the skin reactions after the bites are not always known. The authors present two cases of patients with hemorrhagic blisters on their hands after tabanidae bites and discuss the factors that cause the problem and the importance of the differential diagnosis of blisters with hemorrhagic content on human skin.

Stinging insect allergy is uncommon but can be life threatening. Diagnosis requires clinical history and confirmative skin or blood testing by an allergist. Baseline serum tryptase level can be used to stratify risk. Treatment is supportive for all reactions except for anaphylaxis, which is treated with intramuscular epinephrine, recumbent posture, and adjunct measures such as IV fluids, and oxygen. Venom immunotherapy is most effective for long-term management in patients with a history of anaphylaxis. Venom immunotherapy rapidly reduces the risk of sting anaphylaxis by up to 98% and maintena

Envenomation by the larval or pupal stages of moths occurs when the victim presses their hairs. They penetrate the subcutaneous tissue, releasing toxins such as proteolytic enzymes, histamine and other pro-inflammatory substances. Cutaneous reactions, including severe pain, oedema and erythema are frequent local manifestations of caterpillar envenomation, but, in some cases, the reactions can evolve into vesicles, bullae, erosions, petechiae, superficial skin necrosis and ulcerations. Alternatively, some individual can develop allergic reactions, renal failure, osteochondritis, deformity and i

During their lifetime, 94.5% of people are stung by wasps, honeybees, hornets, or bumblebees (order Hymenoptera). After a sting, most people show typical local symptoms, 5% to 15% develop local allergic reactions, and 3% to 8.9%--systemic allergic reactions (SARs), which may be potentially life-threatening in about 10% of them. In mild forms of Hymenoptera-venom allergy (HVA), the leading symptoms are urticaria and edema (grades I and II, respectively, according to the Mueller classification). Severe SARs are classified as grade III (respiratory symptoms) and IV (cardiovascular symptoms). Rare

The occurrence of acute myocardial infarction following a honeybee sting has been very rarely reported in the previous literature. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms include severe hypotension, rarely hypertension and coronary vasospasm with subsequent thrombosis of coronary vessels developed after the release of vasoactive, inflammatory and thrombogenic substances contained in the bee venom. This syndrome is also known as Kounis syndrome. We report a case of a 32-year-old man who presented with acute inferior wall myocardial infarction within 3 h of honeybee sting. He was treated with thromboly
