Proper training key to defeating Legionella.

The long-awaited report from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) into the Barrow Legionella outbreak has now been published and is in the public domain. Its conclusions and recommendations clearly recognise that the outbreak cannot, and should not, be attributed purely to one group or to the individuals working within one department. Moreover, the failings which contributed to the outbreak stretched from the lowest levels to the top of the council organisation. Develop Training's Tony Green explains how correct training can prevent future outbreaks.

[Preclinical trials for mastering intracytoplasmic injection of a sole spermatozoid for the treatment of male infertility].

Before starting with the clinical application of ICS, aged unfertilized oocytes were gathered for training and were injected with a single sperm or without a spermatozoon as a control group for activation. Oocyte damage, initially as high as 40% was reduced to 15% after 60 oocytes. Normal fertilization (2PN) occurred in 18% of the injected oocytes. After this training period 1,488 metaphase II oocytes collected during 144 cycles were used for ICSI. Results were split up in 3 periods (n = 55, n = 24, n = 57) corresponding to the different improvements made in the technique. Results form ICSI in

The effect of an in-flight, emergency training program on crew confidence.

INTRODUCTION: Despite some progress, the air medical transport profession continues to experience widely publicized accidents that result in injuries and death to crew members and patients. An air medical crew member's experience, training and confidence may affect his or her ability to deal effectively with an in-flight emergency, and may also affect his or her behavior before and after the emergency. SETTING: A hospital-based, rural rotor- and fixed-wing program flying approximately 890 flights per year. Seventy-seven percent of these flights are interfacility. METHODS: A pretraining surve

Administrative challenges to working with HIV-positive clients: experiences of mental health and substance abuse program directors in Florida.

Administrators of publicly-funded mental health and substance abuse programs described their agencies' activities, policy development, the administrative impediments, and training needs related to caring for HIV-infected clients. Almost all have served HIV-infected clients and admit clients to their programs regardless of HIV status. The administrators reported little staff opposition to working with this clientele. Liability and confidentiality concerning testing and client/staff safety were major concerns. The difficulty of providing needed medical care and the expense of treating such clien

Effects of a national team training intervention for operating theatre teams on patient and staff outcomes: a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised trial and mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated a national, multidisciplinary in situ simulation-based team training intervention in New Zealand public hospitals. We hypothesised that outcomes for surgical patients and staff perceptions of teamwork and observed teamwork behaviours would improve after the intervention. METHODS: In a stepped-wedge cluster trial, all New Zealand's 20 District Health Boards were semi-randomised into four cohorts. Training was progressively implemented with one cohort per year. Patient outcomes were derived from a national administrative dataset. Outcome measures were intervention uptak

Development of a Dementia Education Workshop for Prison Staff, Prisoners, and Health and Social Care Professionals to Enable Them to Support Prisoners With Dementia.

The world's prison population is aging. Older prisoners, those aged 50 years and older, are at risk of poor health and developing a dementia. Prisoners with dementia may present challenges to the regime within the prison and require extra support. However, prison staff and health and social care professionals have reported a lack of skills and knowledge to identify and support prisoners with dementia. This may be due to a lack of dementia education programs developed specifically for the prison setting and delivered comprehensively for all who work with prisoners. The aim of this article is to

[Abuse in healthcare - lessons learned during two decades of research].

Patients' experience of abuse in health care (AHC) is common, and may cause long-lasting suffering. In Sweden, lifetime prevalence is estimated at 20 per cent among female patients and 8 per cent among male patients, and a background of other abuse is a risk factor. Most health care staff have experience of patients who have been abused, but the topic is surrounded by silence from both patients and caregivers. Models for training staff in groups have been evaluated and a more proactive stance can be fostered. Department heads and health care authorities are responsible for providing staff with
