Failure to overcome 'innate' fear: a developmental test of the non-associative model of fear acquisition.

The non-associative, Darwinian theory of fear acquisition proposes that some individuals fail to overcome biologically-relevant fears (e.g. height) because they (1) do not have sufficient safe exposure to the relevant stimuli early in life or (2) are poor habituators who have difficulty 'learning not to fear'. These two hypotheses were tested in a longitudinal birth cohort study. Study 1 found evidence for reduced exposure to height stimuli in childhood for individuals with a fear of heights compared to study members without fear. Study 2 found evidence for higher levels of stress reactivity (

The role of human genetics in society: implications for legal involvement.

The tools and techniques of human genetics are very much part of medicine in the 1990s and beyond. Man's motivation for self improvement has been an integral part of his make-up since time immemorial. The human desire for preserving the fittest and weeding out the worst remains the same since stone-age man practised castration, coitus interruptus, mechanical contraception, urethral surgery, abortion, infanticide, infant cannibalism, delayed lactation and geronticide. During the intervening centuries there have been scores of attempts to develop dream states; at forced mass migration, or to pro

Nursing intuition as an assessment tool in predicting severity of injury in trauma patients.

Emergency nurses assess patients using objective and subjective data. When the charge nurse takes report from a paramedic, another form of assessment occurs. By eliciting apt data and using trauma-scoring criteria, a decision to enact a "trauma code" occurs. Considering the cost and staff utilization, it is important for the charge nurse to make sound decisions when activating a trauma code. The objective of this study is to explore the validity of nurses' use of intuition in patients to predict the severity of their injuries, and whether it impacts their choice to institute a trauma code. The

Case reports of fighting immobilization: The paradoxical contribution of flaccid and tonic immobility to the fight.

OBJECTIVE: Immobilization, or death feigning, is a survival strategy induced when the fight-or-flight response fails. Internally and externally, the near-death condition of immobilization can cause pathological problems, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), making it a therapeutic target. However, we have observed clients with PTSD who use immobilization to actively fight traumatic stresses. The key to their recovery was not releasing them from immobilization-related problems but rather admiring their fighting strategy. The therapeutic basis of this "fighting immobilization" (FGI) d

Biodegradable N, O-carboxymethyl chitosan/oxidized regenerated cellulose composite gauze as a barrier for preventing postoperative adhesion.

Tissue adhesion is one of the most common complications after surgery (especially after abdominal surgery), causing notable influences after the damaged tissue has healed. A physical barrier placed between the wound site and the adjacent tissues is a convenient and highly effective technique to minimize or prevent abdominal adhesions. In this work, the N, O-carboxymethyl chitosan/oxidized regenerated cellulose (N, O-CS/ORC) composite gauze was prepared. The N, O-CS/ORC composite gauze is degradable; in addition, the gauze exhibits excellent antimicrobial functionality against S. aureus and E.

Substance abuse in adolescents: a complex conundrum for the clinician.

Substance abuse remains a complex and pervasive conundrum for society and for clinicians seeking to improve the lives of their pediatric patients. Substance abuse is linked to the human instinct for pleasure at any cost and is fueled by enticing encouragement of the media teaching society to seek drug-induced pleasure without fear of negative consequences. Other complications are the limited education about psychoactive substances provided to youth and the health care profession pledged to serve them. Primary care clinicians must provide their adolescent patients with adequate screening and co

Psychotrauma and reconciliation.

Our goal was to analyze the phenomenon of intergenerational transmission of trauma-related feelings and propose a way to alleviate this process through reconciliation of conflicted groups. The genesis of psychotrauma, with respect to the organism's defensive barrier being pierced by too strong external impulses, is discussed in terms of activation of the death instinct or by reactivation of childhood trauma. Genesis of the group trauma is explained in terms of chosen trauma, ie, activation of ancient national or other large group traumas, leading to the creation of malignant prejudices and hyp

Blueprints for behavior: genetic specification of neural circuitry for innate behaviors.

Innate behaviors offer a unique opportunity to use genetic analysis to dissect and characterize the neural substrates of complex behavioral programs. Courtship in Drosophila involves a complex series of stereotyped behaviors that include numerous exchanges of multimodal sensory information over time. As we will discuss in this review, recent work has demonstrated that male-specific expression of Fruitless transcription factors (Fru(M) proteins) is necessary and sufficient to confer the potential for male courtship behaviors. Fru(M) factors program neurons of the male central and peripheral ner

Reversal of innate aversions: attempts to induce a preference for chili peppers in rats.

Although humans frequently develop preferences for innately unpalatable bitter or irritant substances, such preferences are extremely rare in animals. An attempt was made to understand the nature of this difference by systematic experiments with laboratory rats, with chili pepper as the unpalatable substance. In parallel with major aspects of the human experience with chili pepper, rats were exposed to it as a flavoring in all their food for periods up to 11 mo from birth, without significant preference enhancement. Gradual introduction of chili into the diet also had no effect, nor did a seri

System organization of alimentary behavior in the newborn and the developing cat.

This review deals with the structural, behavioral, and EEG correlates of searching for food and food intake. Data were collected on freely behaving kittens of 1 to 60 days of age with chronically implanted electrodes. The 1st manifestations of hunger involve activation of limbic-reticular structures and electroencephalographic (EEG) activity consisting of fast oscillations of 30-40-60 cps, correlated with general behavioral arousal as manifested by motor restlessness and vocal reactions. The more specific behavior form of hunger--feeding motivation--involves structures that include the motor a

Neural circuits for stress-induced water drinking in relief of anxiety.

Drinking water is a rapid, instinctive behavior of mammals following stress. The role of such stress-induced water drinking behavior and its neural mechanisms remain poorly known. Here, we identify two sequentially activated neural circuits that respectively mediate stress-induced drinking behavior and reward encoding, which collectively promote the extinction of anxiety-like behaviors in mice. Specifically, mild short-term stress induces anxiety-like behaviors and activates glutamatergic neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFCGlu) projecting to glutamatergic neurons in the median preopt

Resistance to β-lactam antibiotic may influence nanH gene expression in Trueperella pyogenes isolated from bovine endometritis.

Virulence could be modulated by many instinctive and environmental factors including oxygen, osmolarity and antimicrobial agents. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between drug resistance and the nanH expression in Trueperella pyogenes (T. pyogenes). Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 6 β-lactam antimicrobial agents (penicillin G, amoxicillin, oxacillin, cefazolin, ceftiofur, and ampicillin) against T. pyogenes were tested by standard broth dilution method according to the protocols of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), and real-time fluorescent quan

Variation in the rate of recovery in motor function between the upper and lower limbs in patients with stroke: some proposed hypotheses and their implications for research and practice.

BACKGROUND: Stroke results in impairment of motor function of both the upper and lower limbs. However, although it is debatable, motor function of the lower limb is believed to recover faster than that of the upper limb. The aim of this paper is to propose some hypotheses to explain the reasons for that, and discuss their implications for research and practice. METHOD: We searched PubMED, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase and CENTRAL using the key words, stroke, cerebrovascular accident, upper extremity, lower extremity, and motor recovery for relevant literature. RESULT: The search generated a

Hypothalamic-amygdala gating of caregiving-like prosocial behavior in mice.

Distress sharing within an ingroup instinctively motivates caregiving-like prosocial behavior in social animals and humans, yet how aversive social stimuli paradoxically trigger such behavior remains unclear. Here, we show that stress-state matching in observer mice elicits caregiving-like behaviors (allogrooming and injury-targeted allolicking) toward cagemates in pain, resulting in synchronized social buffering. Importantly, we identify that the excitation of vasopressin receptor 1a-expressing (V1aR-expressing) neurons in the central medial amygdala (CeM) underlies both emotional-state match

Re-wiring Guilt: How Advancing Neuroscience Encourages Strategic Interventions Over Retributive Justice.

The increasing visibility of neuroscience employed in legal contexts has rightfully prompted critical discourse regarding the boundaries of its utility. High profile debates include some extreme positions that either undermine the relevance of neuroscience or overstate its role in determining legal responsibility. Here we adopt a conciliatory attitude, reaffirming the current value of neuroscience in jurisprudence and addressing its role in shifting normative attitudes about culpability. Adopting a balanced perspective about the interaction between two dynamic fields (science and law) allows f

Is Trypophobia a Phobia?

In the past 10 years, thousands of people have claimed to be affected by trypophobia, which is the fear of objects with small holes. Recent research suggests that people do not fear the holes; rather, images of clustered holes, which share basic visual characteristics with venomous organisms, lead to nonconscious fear. In the present study, both self-reported measures and the Preschool Single Category Implicit Association Test were adapted for use with preschoolers to investigate whether discomfort related to trypophobic stimuli was grounded in their visual features or based on a nonconsciousl

They shall wear fringes.

The multiple functions of clothes include utility, protection, rivalry, disguise, camouflage, display for seduction purposes, aggression, totemism, and status. Here the focus is on a decorative and distinctive hierarchical aspect of ancient dress, the tsitsit or fringes, whose original function is long absent, but that has endured for 3,500 years in Judaism. The beginning of their use beyond the totemic appears related to issues of changing identity from slavery to liberty, endowing noble status, exhibitionism, a symbol of identity, identification with the aggressor, a talisman, and potency.
