Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly improved the prognosis of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. Although ART can suppress plasma viremia below detectable levels, it cannot eradicate the HIV-1 DNA (provirus) integrated into the host cell genome. This integration often results in unrepaired DNA damage due to the HIV-1-induced inhibition of DNA repair pathways. Furthermore, HIV-1 infection causes telomere attrition in host chromosomes, a critical factor contributing to CD4+ T cell senescence and apoptosis. HIV-1 proteins can induce DNA damage, block DNA replication

The results of previous investigations indicate that age and gender may influence the strength of the human host's immune response to infection of the central nervous system with the larvae of Taenia solium. Most of the relevant research on such neurocysticercosis (NCC) has, however, been conducted on hospital-based samples in developing countries, where differential access to healthcare may bias the study results. Using data from 171 NCC patients participating in a treatment trial, the associations of patient age and gender with the presence of inflammation around NCC cysts (i.e. cysts in the

BACKGROUND: Ant colonies are plagued by a diversity of arthropod guests, which adopt various strategies to avoid or to withstand host attacks. Chemical mimicry of host recognition cues is, for example, a common integration strategy of ant guests. The morphological gestalt and body size of ant guests have long been argued to also affect host hostility, but quantitative studies testing these predictions are largely missing. We here evaluated three guest traits as triggers of host aggression-body size, morphological gestalt, and accuracy in chemical mimicry-in a community of six Eciton army ant s

Anastomotic leak remains a major complication after colorectal resection, but established clinical and technical risk factors do not fully explain why some repairs fail during early healing. This review treats perioperative microbiota as part of a local host-microbe wound environment at the colorectal anastomosis rather than as a broad gut microbiome signal. Literature was identified through PubMed and Web of Science searches covering 1 January 2010-6 July 2026, using terms combining colorectal anastomosis, anastomotic leak, microbiota, microbiome, and host-microbe interactions. Evidence was t

The female microbiome is a complex, dynamic and site-specific ecosystem that plays a vital role in maintaining host health, influencing immune regulation, metabolism, reproductive function and dermatological health. While significant attention has been directed towards modifiable lifestyle and environmental influences, host genetics, including inherited genetic variants in immune, cell signalling, metabolic, hormonal pathways and epithelial structure/barrier integrity, are increasingly recognised as contributors to microbial composition across distinct anatomical niches in individuals. It is t

Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) are an attractive, reliable source for generating functional cardiomyocytes for regeneration of infarcted heart. However, inefficient cell engraftment into host tissue remains a notable challenge to therapeutic success due to mechanical damage or relatively inhospitable microenvironment. Evidence has shown that excessively formed scar tissues around cell delivery sites present as mechanical and biological barriers that inhibit migration and engraftment of implanted cells. In this review, we focus on the functional responses of stem cells and cardiomyocytes during

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has evolved complex mechanisms to manipulate the host immune system and epigenetic machinery, enabling it to establish lifelong latent infection within host cells. Emerging evidence strongly indicates that the EBV acts as a main epigenetic manipulator by silencing host regulatory genes, altering host chromatin landscapes and exploiting B-cell biology. Key mechanisms include viral-mediated recruitment of host DNA methyltransferases and histone-modifying enzymes; modulation of host non-coding RNAs and chromatin architectural factors; and targeted disruption of interf

Among the rheumatic diseases, non so clearly illustrates the relations between host and environmental factors as the seronegative spondyloarthropathy group of disorders. The strongest association is with the histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27, which accounts for a striking susceptibility to these diseases and is present in over 90% of individuals with idiopathic ankylosing spondylitis. Next in importance appears to be a difference in sex penetrance with males predominating in all categories. The most dramatic sex relationship is with postvenereal Reiter's syndrome which has a male-to-female ra

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a deltaretrovirus and the most oncogenic pathogen. Many of the ~20 million HTLV-1 infected people will develop severe leukaemia or an ALS-like motor disease, unless a therapy becomes available. A key step in the establishment of infection is the integration of viral genetic material into the host genome, catalysed by the retroviral integrase (IN) enzyme. Here, we use X-ray crystallography and single-particle cryo-electron microscopy to determine the structure of the functional deltaretroviral IN assembled on viral DNA ends and bound to the B56

Trematodes cause disease in millions of people worldwide, but the absence of commercial vaccines has led to an over-reliance on a handful of monotherapies to control infections. Since drug-resistant fluke populations are emerging, a deeper understanding of parasite biology and host interactions is required to identify new drug targets and immunogenic vaccine candidates. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics represents a key tool to that end. Recent studies have capitalised on the wider availability of annotated helminth genomes to achieve greater coverage of trematode proteomes and discover new a

The analysis of different multi-host systems suggests that even hosts that are not capable of transmitting Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) to the tick vector, Ixodes ricinus, or that are secondary reservoirs for these agents contribute to the intensity of transmission and to the overall risk of Lyme borreliosis, through the process of vector augmentation and pathogen amplification. On the other hand, above certain threshold densities, or in the presence of competition with primary reservoir hosts or low attachment rate of ticks to reservoir hosts, incompetent or less competent hosts may

Analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) is a powerful tool that can provide thermodynamic information on associating systems. Here, we discuss how to use the two fundamental AUC applications, sedimentation velocity (SV), and sedimentation equilibrium (SE), to study nonspecific protein-nucleic acid interactions, with a special emphasis on how to analyze the experimental data to extract thermodynamic information. We discuss three specific applications of this approach: (i) determination of nonspecific binding stoichiometry of E. coli integration host factor protein to dsDNA, (ii) characterization o

Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide in men and the ninth in women. It is also the second most common cause of cancer mortality. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of liver cancer. About 350 million people globally are chronically infected with HBV. Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection accounts for at least 50% cases of HCC worldwide. Other non-HBV factors may increase HCC risk among persons with chronic HBV infection. Both indirect and direct mechanisms are involved in HCC oncogenesis by HBV. HCC-promoting HBV factors include long-lasting infection,

Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most successful pathogens on earth, capable of infecting an extremely broad range of mammals and birds and causing potentially fatal disease in humans. The house mouse (Mus musculus) has been used as the primary laboratory animal model for determining the virulence of T. gondii strains. Epidemiological evidence also suggests a potential association between virulence in mice and disease severity in human toxoplasmosis. However, many factors can affect virulence measurements, including route of infection, life stage of the parasite, number of passages of the paras

The health of the honeybee and, indirectly, global crop production are threatened by several biotic and abiotic factors, which play a poorly defined role in the induction of widespread colony losses. Recent descriptive studies suggest that colony losses are often related to the interaction between pathogens and other stress factors, including parasites. Through an integrated analysis of the population and molecular changes associated with the collapse of honeybee colonies infested by the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, we show that this parasite can de-stabilise the within-host dynamics of D

RNA viruses are a diverse and rapidly evolving group of pathogens that significantly contribute to worldwide morbidity and mortality, propelled by elevated mutation rates and effective use of host cellular mechanisms. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as an essential post-transcriptional regulator of host-virus interactions, influencing viral replication, immunological responses and disease progression. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the miRNA-virus axis in RNA virus infections, highlighting the dynamic and context-dependent roles of host miRNAs. We investigate the mechanistic ba

The ability of PC12 cells to regenerate processes is substantially enhanced in vitro if they have been previously exposed to nerve growth factor (NGF-primed), compared to cells that have not been exposed (NGF-naive). These studies were carried out to determine if the enhanced neuritogenic ability of NGF-primed cells is retained following transplantation. NGF-naive or NGF-primed PC12 cells were transplanted into the striatum of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated mice and allowed to survive for 2 weeks. Mice were given daily injections of cyclosporin A (CyA) to prevent a

Toxoplasma gondii is a prevalent protozoan parasite that can infect any nucleated cell but cannot replicate outside of its host cell. Toxoplasma is auxotrophic for several nutrients including arginine, tryptophan, and purines, which it must acquire from its host cell. The demands of parasite replication rapidly deplete the host cell of these essential nutrients, yet Toxoplasma successfully manages to proliferate until it lyses the host cell. In eukaryotic cells, nutrient starvation can induce the integrated stress response (ISR) through phosphorylation of an essential translation factor eIF2.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly aggressive malignancy with few well-established risk factors. Emerging epidemiological evidence suggests a link between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and PDAC. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
METHODS: High-throughput sequencing-based approach was employed to identify HBV integrations in tumour and para-tumour tissues of PDAC. The biological functions of KMT2B were evaluated in PDAC cell lines as well as in subcutaneous and orthotopic mouse models of PDAC. Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing and RNA seq
