Alzheimer's disease and intelligence.

A significant body of evidence has accumulated suggesting that individual variation in intellectual ability, whether assessed directly by intelligence tests or indirectly through proxy measures, is related to risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) in later life. Important questions remain unanswered, however, such as the specificity of risk for AD vs. other forms of dementia, and the specific links between premorbid intelligence and development of the neuropathology characteristic of AD. Lower premorbid intelligence has also emerged as a risk factor for greater mortality across myriad hea

Artificial General Intelligence for the Detection of Neurodegenerative Disorders.

Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease are among the most common neurodegenerative disorders. These diseases are correlated with advancing age and are hence increasingly becoming prevalent in developed countries due to an increasingly aging demographic. Several tools are used to predict and diagnose these diseases, including pathological and genetic tests, radiological scans, and clinical examinations. Artificial intelligence is evolving to artificial general intelligence, which mimics the human learning process. Large language models can use an enormous volume of online and offline resou

Intellectual changes after radiation for children with brain tumors: which brain structures are most important?

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of radiation dose to different intracranial structures on changes in intellectual function for children with brain tumors. METHODS: We evaluated children with brain tumors treated in 2005-2017 who had longitudinal neuropsychological assessments and available photon dosimetric data (if radiation therapy [RT] given). Full Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) and index scores were evaluated (perceptual reasoning index [PRI], processing speed index [PSI], verbal comprehension index [VCI], and working memory index [WMI]). Neonatal cranial ultrasound abnormalities in low birth weight infants: relation to cognitive outcomes at six years of age.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the independent relation of neonatal cranial ultrasound (US) abnormalities in low birth weight (LBW) infants to cognitive outcomes at 6 years of age. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SAMPLE AND METHODS: Six-year follow-up data were obtained on a regional birth cohort of LBW infants (< 2 kg) systematically screened as neonates with serial US. US abnormalities were dichotomized into isolated germinal matrix/intraventricular hemorrhage (GM/IVH) and parenchymal lesions/ventricular enlargement (PL/VE). Global cognitive outcomes (mental retardation, borderline intelligence, a

Hyperlexia in infantile autism.

Twenty boys meeting the current DSM III criteria for infantile autism at the time of diagnosis were found to be hyperlexic in childhood and have been followed up for 7-17 years. The most striking feature of the group was the compulsion to decode written material without comprehension of its meaning, and this constituted a behavioral phenotype for this population. On word recognition tests such as the WRAT, they scored significantly higher than would be predicted on the basis of intelligence but demonstrated severe reading retardation on tests of reading comprehension such as the Gates-McGiniti

Speech Intelligibility of Cochlear-Implanted and Normal-Hearing Children.

INTRODUCTION: Speech intelligibility, the ability to be understood verbally by listeners, is the gold standard for assessing the effectiveness of cochlear implantation. Thus, the goal of this study was to compare the speech intelligibility between normal-hearing and cochlear-implanted children using the Persian intelligibility test. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six cochlear-implanted children aged 48-95 months, who had been exposed to 95-100 speech therapy sessions, were compared with 40 normal-hearing children aged 48-84 months. The average post-implanted time was 14.53 months. Speech intel

Do autism spectrum disorders differ from each other and from non-spectrum disorders on emotion recognition tests?

We tested whether dimensional measures of empathic ability, theory of mind, and intelligence would differentiate autism spectrum disorders from each other and from non-spectrum disorders. Tests were administered to children with a diagnosis of Autistic Disorder (AutD; n = 20), Asperger's Disorder (AspD; n = 28), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Inattentive Type) (ADHD; n = 35), Mental Retardation (Mild) (MR; n = 34), Anxiety Disorder (AnxD; n = 14), or No Psychological Disorder (NPD; n = 36). Results showed that empathic ability discriminated among groups on the autism spectrum (AutD

Characterization of hsa_circ_0000594 as a new biomarker and therapeutic target for hepatoblastoma.

Children with learning disorders (LD) perform below average in tests of academic abilities and intelligence. These children also have a significantly abnormal resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) compared to children with typical development (TD), i.e., an excess of slow brain oscillations such as delta and theta that may be markers of inefficient cognitive processing. We aimed to explore the relationship between the performance in an intelligence test and the resting-state EEG power spectrum of children with LD. Ninety-one children with LD and 45 control children with TD were evaluated wi

Developmental trajectories from birth to school age in healthy term-born children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the stability of the scores obtained on tests of motor development from birth until school age in healthy, term singletons and to determine if early motor scores are associated with more complex cognitive functions at school age, such as attention and memory. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This longitudinal, prospective cohort study included 77 infants. The motor development of these infants was assessed during the neonatal period with Prechtl's neurologic examination; in early infancy with Touwen's neurologic examination and general movement assessment; at toddler age with Hem

Effects of ventricular shunt treatment of normal pressure hydrocephalus on psychological functions.

A prospective trial for diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) was carried out in 30 consecutive patients (12 women, 18 men, mean age: 61 years, range 21-80). The clinical diagnosis was based on the presence of one or more of the three clinical elements of NPH: gait disturbance, incontinence and mental deterioration as well as radiological criteria of ventricular enlargement. Preoperatively, physical and radiological investigations and psychological tests were routinely performed. Cognitive functions such as fluency, selective attention and motor speed were

Cognitive deficits at age 22 years associated with prenatal exposure to methylmercury.

Prenatal exposure to mercury has been associated with adverse effects on child neurodevelopment. The present study aims to determine the extent to which methylmercury-associated cognitive deficits persist into adult age. In a Faroese birth cohort originally formed in 1986-1987 (N = 1,022), prenatal methylmercury exposure was assessed in terms of the mercury concentration in cord blood and maternal hair. Clinical examinations of 847 cohort members at age 22 years were carried out in 2008-2009 using a panel of neuropsychological tests that reflected major functional domains. Subjects with neurol

Neurocognitive Functions and Their Associations With Autistic Symptoms, Emotion, and Behavior in High-Functioning Children and Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have revealed the prognostic significance of intelligence in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the correlations of non-social cognitive functions and clinical characteristics of high-functioning children and adolescents with ASD remain unclear. To identify individual needs, this study aimed to investigate their correlations in high-functioning children and adolescents with ASD and conduct an exploratory comparison between subgroups. METHODS: We recruited children and adolescents who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition

Imputation of fluid intelligence scores reduces ascertainment bias and increases power for analyses of common and rare variants.

Studying the genetics of intelligence provides insight into the neurobiology of cognitive function and rare neurodevelopmental conditions. Here we integrated fluid intelligence (FI) tests across different UK Biobank measures and imputed FI for unmeasured individuals, increasing the sample size from ~270,000 to >455,000. We show through extensive validation that the imputed phenotype genetically resembles measured FI, although some noncognitive signal likely remains. Combining measured and imputed FI increases the number of independent significant common SNP associations from 390 to 550 and red

Correlations between neuropsychological test results and P300 latency during silent-count and button-press tasks in post-traumatic brain injury patients.

To evaluate the correlations between memory function and intelligence and event-related potential, the P300 component for different tasks was studied for 30 post-traumatic brain injury patients (mean age 31.6 +/- 13.7 years; 23 male and 7 female). Memory function, intelligence, and depression were measured by using the Mini-Mental State Examination, the revised Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and the Self-Rating Depression Scale, respectively. P300 latency was measured during silent-count and button-press tests at three midline scalp (Fz, Cz, and Pz) sites for all subjects by using an audito
