Intermittent pneumatic compression after varicose vein surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is an established treatment option to remove tissue fluid from patients with lymphedema and chronic venous disease. The effects of IPC applied directly after varicose vein surgery performed with high volumes of tumescent local anesthesia have not been investigated. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the use of postoperative IPC concerning its effects on the leg volume and patient comfort after surgery. METHODS: We performed an investigator-initiated, single-center, open-label randomized controlled trial. A total of 186 patients ind

Dynamic Compression Enhances Pressure-to-Pain Threshold in Elite Athlete Recovery: Exploratory Study.

Athlete recovery-adaptation is crucial to the progress and performance of highly trained athletes. The purpose of this study was to assess peristaltic pulse dynamic compression (PPDC) in reducing short-term pressure-to-pain threshold (PPT) among Olympic Training Center athletes after morning training. Muscular tenderness and stiffness are common symptoms of fatigue and exercise-induced muscle microtrauma and edema. Twenty-four highly trained athletes (men = 12 and women = 12) volunteered to participate in this study. The athletes were randomly assigned to experimental (n = 12) and control (n =

Circumferential suction-assisted lipectomy for lymphoedema after surgery for breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of arm lymphoedema after treatment for breast cancer ranges from 1 to 49 per cent. Although most women can be treated by non-operative means with satisfying results, end-stage lymphoedema is often non-responsive to compression, where hypertrophy of adipose tissue limits the outcome value of compression or massage. METHODS: This was a prospective study of 37 women with unilateral non-pitting lymphoedema. After initial conservative treatment for 2-4 days, circumferential suction-assisted lipectomy was used to remove excess volume. Limb compression was resumed after sur

Pneumatic Compression-Assisted Lymphoscintigraphy for Quantitative Evaluation of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema.

OBJECTIVES: Acquired lymphedema of upper extremity is a chronic pathologic status that frequently occurs after breast cancer treatment. Reliable and quantitative evaluation of lymphedema is crucial for successful management of patients. Although lymphoscintigraphy is the primary investigation for the confirmation and evaluation of lymphedema, the specific protocol of stress intervention is not well established. This study aims to introduce intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) as a part of stress lymphoscintigraphy and compare the effectiveness of conventional stress lymphoscintigraphy (CSL

Venous Leg Ulcers: Advanced Therapies and New Technologies.

The prevalence of venous leg ulcers (VLUs) differs between 1.5% and 3% in the general population. The challenge in treating VLUs is common recurrence. Moreover, VLUs can be resistant to healing, despite appropriate treatment. In these cases, advanced wound therapies should be considered. The number of new technologies, applied in VLUs treatment, has increased in the last years. These therapies include biophysical interventions such as ultrasound therapy, electrical stimulations, electromagnetic therapy, or phototherapy. Furthermore, stem cell therapies, biologic skin equivalents, platelet-rich

A systematic review of intermittent pneumatic compression for critical limb ischaemia.

Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is designed to aid wound healing and limb salvage for patients with critical limb ischaemia who are not candidates for revascularisation. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to identify and critically appraise the evidence supporting its use in this population. A search was conducted in Embase, MEDLINE and clinical trial registries up to the end of March 2013. No date or language restrictions were applied. Quality assessment was performed by two people independently. Quality was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool and the NICE c

Effects of Continuous Graduated Pneumatic Compression and Intermittent Pneumatic Compression on Lower Limb Hemodynamics for VTE Prophylaxis in Arthroplasty.

OBJECTIVE: Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is considered the standard of care for preventing venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the hospital setting. However, its widespread adoption after hospitalization has been limited due to its shortcomings in obstruction of venous valves and blood reflux. The objective of this study is to compare the effects of continuous graduated pneumatic compression (CGPC), a new device with a novel mechanism, and IPC on lower hemodynamics and the incidence of VTE in patients undergoing arthroplasty. METHODS: We randomized 123 participants undergoing knee arth

A retrospective study on the clinical efficacy of pneumatic hand rehabilitation devices in managing post-stroke chirospasm following ischemic stroke.

Chirospasm is a common sequela of ischemic stroke (IS), often resulting in substantial impairment of hand function and quality of life. Although conventional rehabilitation can partially improve motor recovery, it is often insufficient in effectively reducing spasticity and edema, thereby necessitating adjunctive interventions. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a pneumatic hand rehabilitation device in improving hand function and alleviating spasticity in IS patients with chirospasm. Clinical data from 76 patients with chirospasm following IS, treated at our insti

Vena caval filters for the prevention of pulmonary embolism.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary emboli (PE), or blood clots in the lungs, can be potentially fatal. Anticoagulation is the first line therapy to prevent PE. In some instances anticoagulation fails to prevent more emboli, or cannot be given because the person has a high risk of bleeding. Inferior vena caval filters (VCFs) are metal alloy devices that mechanically trap fragmented emboli from the deep leg veins en route to the pulmonary circulation. Retrievable filters are designed to be introduced and removed percutaneously. Although their deployment seems of theoretical benefit, their clinical efficacy an

Pneumatic compression device does not show effective thromboprophylaxis following total knee arthroplasty in a low incidence population.

INTRODUCTION: Purpose of this study was to assess whether the intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) device would be an effective prophylaxis for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in a low incidence population. HYPOTHESIS: The mechanical thromboprophylaxis could reduce the incidence of DVT compared to non-prophylaxis group and would have similar efficacy as the chemoprophylaxis following TKA in a low DVT incidence population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2009 to June 2016, 1259 elective primary TKA with preoperative diagnosis of primary osteoarthriti

Can foot compression under a plaster cast prevent deep-vein thrombosis during lower limb immobilisation?

We hypothesised that adjuvant intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) beneath a plaster cast would reduce the risk of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) during post-operative immobilisation of the lower limb. Of 87 patients with acute tendo Achillis (TA) rupture, 26 were prospectively randomised post-operatively after open TA repair. The treatment group (n = 14) received two weeks of IPC of the foot for at least six hours daily under a plaster cast. The control group (n = 12) had no additional treatment. At two weeks post-operatively all patients received an orthosis until follow-up at six weeks. At

External pneumatic intermittent compression for treatment of dependent pregnancy edema.

A portable external pneumatic intermittent compression (EPIC) device has been successful in reducing peripheral edema. This study explored the effectiveness of EPIC for treating dependent pregnancy edema. In the study, 42 healthy pregnant women received EPIC for 30 minutes at 40 torr while in the left lateral recumbent position: Group One with mid-thigh boots, and Group Two with below-knee boots. Prior to compression, descriptive data were gathered, leg circumference measurements made, and surface skin temperatures recorded for three sites per leg. Vital signs were taken and pedal edema subjec
