Longitudinal Trajectories, Social and Individual Antecedents, and Outcomes of Problematic Internet Use Among Late Adolescents.

Given the detrimental effects associated with problematic internet use (PIU) and the need to better understand its nature and evolution, the present study examined the development of PIU in a sample of 1,750 adolescents (aged 16-19) from Finland over a 3-year period. We documented the social (loneliness, perceived maternal and paternal behaviors) and individual (sex) antecedents, as well as the outcome implications (depressive symptoms, substance use, academic achievement) of PIU trajectories. Outcomes also predicted PIU trajectories. Latent curve modeling revealed an initially moderate, and s

An analysis of the brain structures underlying the link between pathological Internet use and anxiety.

Pathological Internet use (PIU) is associated with various maladaptive problems and is becoming increasingly common among adolescents. Anxiety has been discovered as an important predictor of PIU, with the neural basis underlying the link between these two variables remaining unclear. In this study, PIU variations, individual anxiety levels, and T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance images (MRI) were collected from 95 healthy male adolescents. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was then applied to identify the brain regions related to individual variations in PIU, with mediation analyses being

Death from cardiac glycoside "pong-pong" following use as weight-loss supplement purchased on Internet.

Cerbera odollam or "pong-pong" tree contains cardiac glycosides similar to digoxin, oleander and yellow oleander. Cerbera odollam is a common method of suicide in South East Asia and has also been used as a weight loss supplement. We present a case of a 33-year-old female presenting with lethargy, vomiting, bradycardia, severe hyperkalemia of 8.9 mEq/L, slow atrial fibrillation followed by cardiovascular collapse following the ingestion of "pong-pong", the kernel of Cerbera odollam, as a weight loss supplement. Despite the administration of a total of nine vials of digoxin-specific Fab the pat

Using street imagery and crowdsourcing internet marketplaces to measure motorcycle helmet use in Bangkok, Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: The majority of Thailand's road traffic deaths occur on motorised two-wheeled or three-wheeled vehicles. Accurately measuring helmet use is important for the evaluation of new legislation and enforcement. Current methods for estimating helmet use involve roadside observation or surveillance of police and hospital records, both of which are time-consuming and costly. Our objective was to develop a novel method of estimating motorcycle helmet use. METHODS: Using Google Maps, 3000 intersections in Bangkok were selected at random. At each intersection, hyperlinks of four images 90°

Problematic internet use and psychiatric co-morbidity in a population of Japanese adult psychiatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Many studies reported the high prevalence of problematic internet use (PIU) among adolescents (13-50%), and PIU was associated with various psychiatric symptoms. In contrast, only a few studies investigated the prevalence among the adult population (6%). This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of PIU and psychiatric co-morbidity among adult psychiatric patients. METHODS: Three hundred thirty-three adult psychiatric patients were recruited over a 3-month period. Two hundred thirty-one of them completed the survey (response rate: 69.4%, 231/333; Male/Female/Transgender: 90/13

Guided and Unguided Internet-Based Treatment for Problematic Alcohol Use - A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: The Internet has increasingly been studied as mode of delivery for interventions targeting problematic alcohol use. Most interventions have been fully automated, but some research suggests that adding counselor guidance may improve alcohol consumption outcomes. METHODS: An eight-module Internet-based self-help program based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) was tested among Internet help-seekers. Eighty participants with problematic alcohol use according to the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT; scores of ≥ 6 for women and ≥ 8 for men) were recruited online from

Postpartum Preeclampsia: What Can Stories Posted on the Internet Tell Us?

Postpartum preeclampsia has not received the needed attention that preeclampsia has. It is the lesser-known hypertensive disorder but can be just as life-threatening as eclampsia. Because of the scarcity of qualitative research on postpartum preeclampsia, the purpose of this study was to help fill this gap by exploring personal experiences of this dangerous complication as described in online blogs. Using Google search engine, 25 stories of postpartum preeclampsia were located. Krippendorff's content analysis for qualitative data was the research design used. Five themes were identified: (1) N

Problematic use of the Internet is a unidimensional quasi-trait with impulsive and compulsive subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Problematic use of the Internet has been highlighted as needing further study by international bodies, including the European Union and American Psychiatric Association. Knowledge regarding the optimal classification of problematic use of the Internet, subtypes, and associations with clinical disorders has been hindered by reliance on measurement instruments characterized by limited psychometric properties and external validation. METHODS: Non-treatment seeking individuals were recruited from the community of Stellenbosch, South Africa (N = 1661), and Chicago, United States of Ame

Using the Internet to Train Therapists: Randomized Comparison of Two Scalable Methods.

BACKGROUND: One of the major barriers to the dissemination and implementation of psychological treatments is the scarcity of suitably trained therapists. The currently accepted method of training is not scalable. Recently, a scalable form of training, Web-centered training, has been shown to have promise. OBJECTIVE: The goal of our research was to conduct a randomized comparison of the relative effects of independent and supported Web-centered training on therapist competence and investigate the persistence of the effects. METHODS: Eligible therapists were recruited from across the United St

The Genetic and Environmental Contributions to Internet Use and Associations With Psychopathology: A Twin Study.

Excessive internet use has been linked to psychopathology. Therefore, understanding the genetic and environmental risks underpinning internet use and their relation to psychopathology is important. This study aims to explore the genetic and environmental etiology of internet use measures and their associations with internalizing disorders and substance use disorders. The sample included 2,059 monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) young adult twins from the Brisbane Longitudinal Twin Study (BLTS). Younger participants reported more frequent internet use, while women were more likely to use the in

Using the internet for rapid investigation of an outbreak of diarrhoeal illness in mountain bikers.

In summer 2008, we investigated an outbreak of diarrhoeal illness in participants of a mountain-bike event in Wales (UK) which had been affected by heavy rain. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to investigate the cause using an internet-based questionnaire. Fifty-three percent of those contacted responded, and 161 (46·5%) out of the 347 responders, reported gastrointestinal symptoms. Median day of onset was 3 days following the event. Ten riders reported receiving a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of Campylobacter. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified the inadvertent ing

College dating and social anxiety: using the Internet as a means of connecting to others.

With the advent and widespread use of the Internet, various online media are being used to connect and maintain social relationships in individuals of all ages. Social relationships are vital to healthy development, and individuals with social and/or dating anxiety may have marked difficulty in establishing appropriate, supportive relationships because of fear of negative evaluation by others. For these individuals, the Internet may open avenues of communication and provide an outlet through which relationships can be formed and preserved. This study investigated the characteristics of compute

Cognitive assessment of risk-taking behavior in adults with substance use disorders and internet addiction.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with substance use and internet addiction disorders have a greater likelihood to indulge in risky behavior and show signs of impairment in self-regulation. Risk-taking behavior depends on reward seeking, impulsiveness, and cognitive control systems such as executive functioning, cognitive flexibility, and working memory. Assessment using cognitive tasks and validated questionnaires can provide an insight into the risk-taking behavior of these individuals. AIM: To assess the risk-taking behavior in adults with substance use disorders (SUDs) and internet addiction, by bo

Psychotic depression with suicidality in the context of internet gaming disorder and chronic cannabis use.

A man in his 20s was admitted after a serious suicide attempt (hypnotic overdose) following months of severe depression and social withdrawal. In the preceding 2 weeks, after a 2-day forced break from gaming due to a brief, mild, self-limited illness during which COVID-19 testing was not performed and loss of in-game status, he developed derealisation and paranoid ideas that others were 'non-playable characters'. His history revealed compulsive online gaming (approximately 10 hours/day) and chronic cannabis use, and urine toxicology was positive for cannabis. He was treated with antipsychotics

Internet and Social Media Use Among Patients with Hair and Scalp Disorders: A Behavioral Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: TikTok, a social media platform, is a tool for disseminating dermatological public health education. On TikTok, like other social media platforms, both board-certified dermatologists and non-medical providers ("influencers") provide dermatological advice, but how the quality of the advice compares between the two creator groups is unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to assess similarities and differences in the language used within content, user receptibility, and engagement and the utility of online education in understanding hair and scalp disorders. Gender differences in psychosomatic symptoms associated with problematic Internet use among adolescents in Saudi Arabia.

Excessive Internet usage may lead to problematic Internet use (PIU) with significant functional, social, or occupational consequences. We investigated whether the association between PIU and psychosomatic symptoms varied between genders among adolescents in Saudi Arabia. School students (grades 7-12; n = 1599) from two major cities in Saudi Arabia participated in this cross-sectional study. PIU was assessed with Young's Internet Addiction Test (YIAT), and psychosomatic symptoms were evaluated using the Health Behavior in School-aged Children Symptom Checklist (HBSC SCL).
