Beyond accuracy: interoceptive self-appraisal and the meaning of bodily signals.

For decades, accuracy in detecting internal bodily signals has been considered an important component of emotional experience. Yet this link remains elusive. Across methods and domains, interoceptive accuracy shows inconsistent associations with emotion and psychopathology. We argue this mismatch reflects a hierarchy of interoceptive processing: accuracy measures capture how bodily signals are detected, whereas emotion depends on metacognitive appraisals of what those signals mean, their reliability, and what they imply about the self. We introduce interoceptive self-appraisal (ISA) as a highe

Manipulation of interoceptive signaling biases decision making in rhesus macaques.

Several influential theories have proposed that interoceptive signals, sent from the body to the brain, contribute to neural processes that coordinate complex behaviors. We altered the physiological state of the body using compounds that have minimal effect on the brain and evaluated their effect on decision making in rhesus monkeys. We used glycopyrrolate, a nonspecific muscarinic (parasympathetic) antagonist, and isoproterenol, a beta-1/2 (sympathetic) agonist, to create a sympathetic-dominated state in the periphery, that was indexed by increased heart rate. Rhesus monkeys were trained on t

Xylazine potentiates the interoceptive effects of fentanyl in male and female rats.

RATIONALE: Xylazine, a sedative typically used in veterinary medicine, has been increasingly detected as an adulterant in the unregulated opioid supply and present in opioid overdose deaths. Therefore, xylazine-adulterated fentanyl is a growing public health concern. People who use drugs have reported that xylazine changes and prolongs the effects of fentanyl. OBJECTIVES: We used standard operant drug discrimination procedures to better understand how xylazine impacts the discriminative stimulus/interoceptive effects of fentanyl. METHODS: Male and female Long-Evans rats (n = 23) were trained

Relationship between sleep variables and interoceptive awareness in daytime workers.

Interoception refers to the sensation of internal and physiological bodily states, such as heart rate, and contributes to the maintenance of bodily internal homeostasis. Some studies showed that interoceptive awareness is related to experiencing nightmares and subjective sleep quality. Similarly to the perception of heart rate variability, sleepiness is thought to be mainly evoked by homeostatic processes and is based on the awareness and recognition of internal body signals. However, the relationship between subjective excessive daytime sleepiness and interoceptive awareness has not been addr

Interoceptive signals from the heart and coronary circulation in health and disease.

This review considers interoceptive signalling from the heart and coronary circulation. Vagal and cardiac sympathetic afferent sensory nerve endings are distributed throughout the atria, ventricles (mainly left), and coronary artery. A small proportion of cardiac receptors attached to thick myelinated vagal afferents are tonically active during the cardiac cycle. Dependent upon location, these mechanoreceptors detect fluctuations in atrial volume and coronary arterial perfusion. Atrial volume and coronary arterial signals contribute to beat-to-beat feedback control and physiological homeostasi

Migraine as an allostatic reset triggered by unresolved interoceptive prediction errors.

Until now, a satisfying account of the cause and purpose of migraine has remained elusive. We explain migraine within the frameworks of allostasis (the situationally-flexible, forward-looking equivalent of homeostasis) and active inference (interacting with the environment via internally-generated predictions). Due to its multimodality, and long timescales between cause and effect, allostasis is inherently prone to catastrophic error, which might be impossible to correct once fully manifest, an early indicator which is elevated prediction error (discrepancy between prediction and sensory input

Interoceptive training impacts the neural circuit of the anterior insula cortex.

Interoception is the perception of afferent information that arises from anywhere and everywhere within the body. Recently, interoceptive accuracy could be enhanced by cognitive training. Given that the anterior insula cortex (AIC) is a key node of interoception, we hypothesized that resting functional connectivity (RSFC) from AIC was involved in an effect of interoceptive training. To address this issue, we conducted a longitudinal intervention study using interoceptive training and obtained RSFC using fMRI before and after the intervention. A heartbeat perception task evaluated interoceptive

Interoceptive technologies for psychiatric interventions: From diagnosis to clinical applications.

Interoception-the perception of internal bodily signals-has emerged as an area of interest due to its implications in emotion and the prevalence of dysfunctional interoceptive processes across psychopathological conditions. Despite the importance of interoception in cognitive neuroscience and psychiatry, its experimental manipulation remains technically challenging. This is due to the invasive nature of existing methods, the limitation of self-report and unimodal measures of interoception, and the absence of standardized approaches across disparate fields. This article integrates diverse resea

Functional and microstructural plasticity following social and interoceptive mental training.

The human brain supports social cognitive functions, including Theory of Mind, empathy, and compassion, through its intrinsic hierarchical organization. However, it remains unclear how the learning and refinement of social skills shapes brain function and structure. We studied if different types of social mental training induce changes in cortical function and microstructure, investigating 332 healthy adults (197 women, 20-55 years) with repeated multimodal neuroimaging and behavioral testing. Our neuroimaging approach examined longitudinal changes in cortical functional gradients and myelin-s

Nightmares, interoceptive sensibility and nociception: An exploratory study in a general population.

OBJECTIVE: Nightmares are dysphoric dreams present in both clinical and non-clinical populations. Physiological activity underlies their emotional reactivity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the role of interoceptive processes (interoceptive sensibility and nociception) in nightmares in the general population. METHOD: 542 French participants were recruited from the general population to complete an online survey. Interoceptive sensibility, nociception, nightmare frequency and nightmare distress were assessed through online scales and questionnaires. Network analysis,

Interoceptive Abilities in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Alexithymia is usually described by three main dimensions difficulty identifying feelings (DIF), difficulty describing feelings (DDF), and externally oriented thinking (EOT). The most commonly used questionnaire investigating alexithymia, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), supports this three-factor structure. One important assumption is that alexithymia severity is associated to vulnerability to somatic diseases, among them gastrointestinal disorders. However, the association between alexithymia and gastrointestinal disorders is not systematic, thus questioning the role of alexithymia as

Repeated Interoceptive Exposure in Individuals With High and Low Anxiety Sensitivity.

Interoceptive exposure is one component in cognitive behavioral therapy of panic disorder. The present investigation addressed changes in defensive mobilization during repeated interoceptive exposure using a standardized hyperventilation procedure. 26 high and 22 low anxiety sensitive persons (ASI, Peterson & Reiss, 1992) went through two guided hyperventilation and normoventilation procedures, spaced one week apart. Breathing parameters, startle response magnitudes and symptom reports were measured. All participants successfully adhered to the guided breathing procedures. Both groups comparab

Atypical Self-Focus Effect on Interoceptive Accuracy in Anorexia Nervosa.

Background: Interoceptive abilities are known to be affected in anorexia nervosa (AN). Previous studies could show that private self-focus can enhance interoceptive accuracy (IAcc) in healthy participants. As body dissatisfaction is high in AN, confrontation with bodily features such as the own face might have a directly opposed effect in AN. Whether patients with AN can benefit from self-focus in their IAcc and whether this pattern changes over the time-course of cognitive behavioral therapy was investigated in this study. Methods: Fifteen patients with AN from the Psychosomatic Clinic in Win

Learning to fear suffocation: a new paradigm for interoceptive fear conditioning.

The present study aimed to establish a new interoceptive fear conditioning paradigm. The conditioned stimulus (CS) was a flow resistor that slightly obstructs breathing; the unconditional stimulus (US) was a breathing occlusion. The paired group (N = 21) received 6 acquisition trials with paired CS-US presentations. The unpaired group (N = 19) received 6 trials of unpaired CS-US presentations. In the extinction phase, both groups were administered 6 CS-only trials. Measurements included startle eyeblink response, electrodermal responses, and self-reported US expectancy. In the paired group, st

Increased interoceptive awareness in fear of flying: sensitivity to suffocation signals.

In flight phobia, particular environmental factors can facilitate a fear response. The current study aimed to explore the relationship between respiratory sensations and fear of flying: individuals with fear of flying may be more sensitive to suffocation signals and could experience more bodily sensations as a consequence of an added resistive respiratory load. The sample included 19 subjects with fear of flying and 19 controls. Each subject wore a mask to which a respiratory load could be added. First, an interference paradigm was used: respiratory loads were presented during a tone detection

Learning to fear obstructed breathing: comparing interoceptive and exteroceptive cues.

The present study investigated interoceptive fear conditioning (IFC) to an interoceptive and exteroceptive conditional stimulus (CS) with a severe respiratory load applied for 30s as the unconditional stimulus (US). CSs were another, weak respiratory load in the intero-IFC study (N=74), and a neutral picture in the extero-IFC study (N=42). CSs preceded the US in the paired groups, whereas the unpaired groups received the same number of unpaired CSs and USs. We measured startle blink EMG, self-reported fear and respiration. In the intero-IFC study, the CS-load was associated with larger startle

Animal phobias versus claustrophobias: exteroceptive versus interoceptive cues.

The overall purpose of this investigation was to examine heterogeneity among specific phobias. In particular, the goals were to compare features of fear responding between individuals fearful of claustrophobic situations and individuals fearful of spiders/snakes, and to compare their response to hyperventilation challenges. By so doing, specific predictions were tested in relation to a conceptual model of exteroceptive and interoceptive fear cues. Using a nonclinical sample, 19 subjects with spider/snake phobias, 18 nonphobics, and 9 subjects with claustrophobias were exposed on two separate o

Dopaminergic mediation of the interoceptive cue produced by d-amphetamine in rats.

After rats were trained to differentiate between the effects of d-amphetamine and saline in a state-dependent task, pretreatment with the tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor, alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine, significantly decreased amphetamine discrimination. Pretreatment with the dopamine-beta-hydroxylase inhibitor, disulfiram, or with the tryptophan hydroxylase inhibitor, p-chloro-phenylalanine, was observed to have no effect on the rats' ability to discriminate d-amphetamine. Administration of haloperidol, a selective dopamine receptor blocker, completely abolished the amphetamine discrimination, wherea

Intestinal interoceptive dysfunction drives age-associated cognitive decline.

Ageing is accompanied by declining memory function, with extremely heterogeneous manifestation in the human population1. Brain-extrinsic factors influencing cognitive decline, such as gastrointestinal signals, have emerged as attractive targets for peripheral interventions2-6, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unclear. Here, by charting a high-resolution map of microbiome ageing and its functional consequences throughout the lifespan of mice, we identify a mechanism by which inhibition of gut-brain signalling during ageing results in impaired neuronal activation in the hippocampus a
