Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy for Patients With Major Depressive Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct a safety analysis among patients with major depressive disorder receiving interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) with and without cognitive remediation. METHODS: This preliminary safety analysis of the outcomes of patients with major depressive disorder was part of a larger randomized controlled trial (RCT) in which patients with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder received IPSRT; half were randomly assigned to receive additional cognitive remediation. The study focused on patients with major depressive disorder because IPSRT had not

SCL-90-R symptom profile clusters among inpatients undergoing psychodynamic group psychotherapy: cluster stability, associations with clinical characteristics and treatment outcome.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Based on pretreatment psychopathological symptoms measured with the Symptom Checklist 90 Revised (SCL-90-R), this study investigated whether stable symptom clusters exist among psychotherapy inpatients. Furthermore, it was examined whether the identified clusters would differ with respect to clinical characteristics and treatment outcome. SAMPLING AND METHODS: We collected data from a total of 3,688 psychotherapeutic inpatients involved in psychodynamic group psychotherapy from 10 hospitals. Ipsatized SCL-90-R presymptom data were used as input variables for a series of clust

Psychosocial and pharmacological treatment of eating disorders: a review of research findings.

Research on the treatment of eating disorders has focused primarily on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and, more recently, interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT). Numerous studies have shown that CBT is helpful in reducing symptoms of bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder. In addition, CBT has been found to be superior or comparable to other psychotherapies in reducing bulimic symptoms. Preliminary findings indicate that CBT and IPT produce similar results at follow-up for bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder. Antidepressant medications are also useful in the treatment of bulimia nervos

Cumulative Childhood Trauma and Relationship Distress: The Intermediary Role of Emotion Regulation Among Couples Seeking Relationship Psychotherapy.

Cumulative childhood trauma (CCT) can lead to long-lasting consequences, such as difficulties in emotion regulation, which, in turn, can affect romantic relationships. While problems with emotion regulation are associated with poorer relationship outcomes, few studies have examined these associations among couples seeking relationship psychotherapy, despite an estimated 80% of individuals in such psychotherapy having experienced CCT. The present study investigated the intermediary role of emotion regulation difficulties in the association between CCT and relationship distress in 199 couples se

Case reports: Using Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) conceptualizations in the dimensional assessment and treatment of personality disorders.

Good Psychiatric Management (GPM) is a generalist clinical management approach for borderline personality disorder that incorporates common ingredients of good standard care for any psychiatric diagnosis with what works from prevailing specialist psychotherapies. Similar to all validated therapies for BPD, it relies on a specified formulation of the disorder' symptoms as arising from interpersonal hypersensitivity, to dynamically describe typical patterns of daily self- and interpersonal issues that drive the instability that defines the general personality dysfunction characteristic of the di

Mindless to Mindful Parenting? Videofeedback-Enhanced Psychotherapy for Violence-Exposed Mothers and Their Young Children.

This article presents a frequent dilemma of treatment-seeking mothers suffering from complex posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that is related to exposure to maltreatment and other forms of interpersonal violence. Namely, that complex PTSD symptoms, including dissociative states in mothers that are triggered by normative child emotion dysregulation, aggression, and distress during early childhood, hinder the development of a productive psychotherapeutic process in more traditional psychodynamic psychotherapies for mothers and children. The article thus presents clinician-assisted videofeedb

Focus is key: Panic-focused interpretations are associated with symptomatic improvement in panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Objective: This study examines whether, in panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP), interpretations of conflicts that underlie anxiety (panic-focused or PF-interpretations) are specifically associated with subsequent panic disorder (PD) symptom improvement, over and above the provision of non-symptom-focused interpretations. Method: Technique use in Sessions 2 and 10 of a 24-session PFPP protocol was assessed for the 65 patients with complete outcome data randomized to PFPP in a two-site trial of psychotherapies for PD. Sessions were rated in 15-min segments for therapists' use of PF-

Empirically supported psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder: Current state of the research.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder requires psychiatric medications, but even guideline-concordant treatment fails to bring many patients to remission or keep them euthymic. To address this gap, researchers have developed adjunctive psychotherapies. The purpose of this paper is to critically review the evidence for the efficacy of manualized psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder. METHODS: We conducted a search of the literature to examine recent (2007-present), randomized controlled studies of the following psychotherapy interventions for bipolar disorder: psychoeducation (PE), cognitive

Investigating the feasibility and effectiveness of a modular treatment program for children and adolescents with depression and interpersonal problems: study protocol of a quasi-experimental pilot feasibility trial (CBASP@YoungAge).

BACKGROUND: Depression is a serious disorder in childhood and adolescence. Affected children and adolescents show significant impairments in various aspects of life. Studies on the effectiveness or efficacy of psychotherapy in depressed children and adolescents are qualitatively very heterogeneous and reveal small effect sizes. There is thus a need to better tailor psychotherapy approaches to these age groups to improve outcomes like parent-child relationship, symptomatology, or quality of life. To address this gap, we designed a modular, individualized treatment program for children and adole

Drug and psychotherapy interactions in depression.

The authors conducted a series of multiple regression analyses of data from depressed patients. They found that 8 factors consistently predicted treatment response: a lower initial level of distress, imipramine treatment, a positive attitude toward group psychotherapy, and a good employment history predicted lower posttreatment distress levels; estrogen maintenance treatment was related to better response to diazepam, and a low level of intelligence predicted better response to both diazepam and imipramine; and a low initial level of interpersonal sensitivity and a significant other's having a

Network meta-analysis of the effectiveness of psychotherapies with or without medication for treating adult depression.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain whether psychotherapies combined with medication are more efficacious than those without medication and determine which combinations yield the best results. METHODS: We conducted a network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing behavioural activation (BA), psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy (DYN), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), individual face-to-face cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT (ftf)), group cognitive behavioural therapy (gCBT), and computerised or internet cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) with each other, or with treatme

Interpersonal predictors of group therapy outcome for complicated grief.

This study investigated three aspects of patients' interpersonal functioning as predictors of outcome for two forms of group psychotherapy for complicated grief. Patients presented with a variety of death losses and met criteria for complicated grief. The three aspects of interpersonal functioning were the patient's (1) attachment to the lost person, (2) quality of object relations (QOR), and (3) level of recent social role functioning. A more secure attachment to the lost person and better social role functioning were associated with more favorable outcome in both forms of therapy. In additio

Psychodynamic psychotherapy for the depressive syndrome.

Historical approaches of psychotherapy for depression are contrasted with current psychotherapeutic strategies. Now more strategies are focused, structured, time-limited, observable, testable, researchable and data based. The following depressive syndromes are reviewed in terms of the literature that demonstrates the effectiveness of psychotherapy: major depressive disorder, bipolar depressive disorder, depression associated with medical illness such as cancer, myocardial infarction and stroke, resistant depression post-traumatic stress disorder, grief reactions and depression during adolescen

Gossip and psychotherapy.

Gossip, a phenomenon as old as history itself, is reflected upon in terms of its need-fulfilling functions for persons and social groups. It is seen as one of the sources of knowledge about life that has potentials for wisdom, and its interpersonal and intrapsychic functions are shown to have similarities to many salient functions of psychotherapy.

Interpersonal difficulties mediate the relationship between child sexual abuse and depression symptoms.

This study examined the influence of interpersonal functioning as a mediator in the relationship between child sexual abuse and depression symptoms, after accounting for the influence of child physical abuse. The research questions build on the existing knowledge base by examining mechanisms of adult adjustment among child sexual abuse survivors. In the current study, 2,892 young adult women (18-29 years old; M = 19.06) reported on child sexual and physical abuse, 5 domains of interpersonal functioning, and depression symptoms. The results supported aggression, sensitivity, ambivalence, and la

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the Eating Disorders.

Research findings strongly suggest that cognitive behavioral therapy for the eating disorders (CBT-ED) is more effective than other treatments for bulimia nervosa (BN) and for binge eating disorder (BED), although interpersonal psychotherapy appears to be equally effective for BED. Evidence for the effectiveness of CBT-ED for the persistent (adult) form of anorexia nervosa (AN) is insufficient at present and is essentially absent for AN in adolescents except for some evidence from uncontrolled trials. This article begins with an overview of the early studies in the development of CBT-ED that s

Dysthymia in clinical practice :psychological therapies.

Psychological therapies for depression may have several different targets: symptom amelioration, relapse prevention, and improving social adaptation. For cognitive therapy the targets are mainly the first two of these, for dynamic psychotherapies particularly the third. In dysthymia, provision of a coping repertoire for a long term illness may also be important. There have been few controlled trials of psychological therapies in dysthymia, but one study has found benefit from marital therapy, and uncontrolled studies, suggest some benefit from cognitive therapy. Controlled trials in other form

Heart rate synchrony as an objective biomarker in psychotherapy: a wearable-based pilot study.

Therapeutic alliance is a well-known predictor of psychotherapy outcome and is often measured by subjective self-reports prone to biases. This pilot study examined whether interpersonal synchrony (IPS) in movement and heart rate (HR), derived from wearable wristbands, can serve as an objective measure of therapeutic engagement in naturalistic cognitive behavioral therapy sessions. Twelve transdiagnostic patient-therapist dyads were analyzed in a short-term follow-up design. Physiological signals were continuously recorded with multisensor wrist-worn devices, while head and body movements were
