Improving the management of seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis usually starts at puberty with a peak incidence at 40 years of age and is more common in males. Patients develop symmetrical, well demarcated, dull or yellowish red patches and plaques with overlying adherent, yellowish greasy scales. Seborrhoeic dermatitis has a distinctive distribution in areas rich in sebaceous glands - the scalp, eyebrows, glabella, nasolabial and nasofacial folds, cheeks, peri-auricular skin, pre-sternal and interscapular areas. It may occur in flexures, especially the axillae, groin, anogenital skin, infra-mammary skin and the umbilicus. Some patie

Overview of dermatophyte infections at the dermatology outpatient clinic of a tertiary institution in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytes are the commonest organisms causing superficial fungal infections. Earlier epidemiologic studies in Nigeria revealed dermatophyte infection as one of the top three reasons for visiting the dermatologists. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency, characteristics and predisposing factors to dermatophyte infections at the dermatology outpatient clinic of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) from March 2003 to September 2009. METHODS: The clinic records and case notes of patients were reviewed. Patients' data which includes demographic details, characteristics of

Acute bacterial skin infections and cellulitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Acute bacterial skin infections are very common, with various presentations and severity. This review focuses on deep skin infections. We separate acute nonnecrotizing infections of the hypodermis (erysipelas), forms with abscesses or exudates and necrotizing fasciitis. These three types actually differ in risk factors, bacteriology, treatment and prognosis. RECENT FINDINGS: Leg erysipelas/cellulitis occurs in more than one person/1000/year. It remains mainly due to streptococci. Foot intertrigo is an important risk factor. Necrotizing fasciitis is much rarer and usually oc

Diaper (napkin) dermatitis: A fold (intertriginous) dermatosis.

Diaper (napkin) dermatitis is an acutely presenting inflammatory irritant contact dermatitis of the diaper region. It is one of the most common dermatologic diseases in infants and children. In the past, the disease was thought to be caused by ammonia; however, a number of factors, such as friction, wetness, inappropriate skin care, microorganisms, antibiotics, and nutritional defects, are important. Diaper dermatitis commonly affects the lower parts of the abdomen, thighs, and diaper area. Involvement of skin fold regions is typical with diaper dermatitis. At the early stages of the disease,

Pattern of skin diseases in the elderly seen at the National Skin Centre (Singapore) 1990.

A retrospective study was conducted at the National Skin Centre (Singapore) for the period 1st January 1990 to 31st December 1990 to determine the pattern of skin disorders in the elderly. A total of 2,571 patients aged 65 years and above were studied. This constituted 6.4% (2,571/39,941) of patients seen at the Centre for that year. 38.1% of the elderly patients were aged 75 years or older. The male to female ratio was 1.3 to 1. There were differences in the pattern of skin problems when compared with the young. Xerosis and asteatotic eczema were distinctly common in the elderly. The most com

[Anal symptoms of gastro-intestinal diseases].

In most cases the ano-cutaneous clinical symptoms correlated to diseases of the gastro-intestinal tract are not specific (erythema, itching, wounds or scarring). However in the following diseases occasional dermatological lesions may directly contribute to their diagnosis: in Crohn's disease, tuberculosis of bowel, chronic entamoebiasis and bilharziosis, the skin lesions of the anal area have the same histological structure as the gut lesions. Perianal fistulas and ulcers are frequent in Crohn's disease especially if there is a colonic and rectal spreading; they respond badly to steroid therap

Annular infectious dermatoses.

Annular configuration is conspicuous in the clinical manifestation of many skin diseases and can be helpful for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Variations may include arciform, ring-form, annular, circinate, serpiginous, gyrated, polycyclic, targeted or figurate forms, in different colors, sizes, and numbers, with various textures and surfaces. In infectious dermatoses, the annular reactions can be specific or nonspecific, while the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In the specific reactions caused by direct invasion of the pathogens, the contest between the centrifugal o

Candida albicans skin infection in diabetic patients: An updated review of pathogenesis and management.

Candida species, commensal residents of human skin, are recognized as the cause of cutaneous candidiasis across various body surfaces. Individuals with weakened immune systems, particularly those with immunosuppressive conditions, are significantly more susceptible to this infection. Diabetes mellitus, a major metabolic disorder, has emerged as a critical factor inducing immunosuppression, thereby facilitating Candida colonization and subsequent skin infections. This comprehensive review examines the prevalence of different types of Candida albicans-induced cutaneous candidiasis in diabetic pa

Mycology - an update Part 3: Dermatomycoses: topical and systemic therapy.

Treatment of dermatophyte infections is based on the clinical picture and mycological detection of the causative pathogen. Based on the appropriate indication, onychomycosis can be treated topically using an antimycotic nail lacquer. Atraumatic nail abrasion with 40 % urea ointment has a beneficial effect on healing. Continuous treatment of onychomycosis with terbinafine represents the most effective systemic therapy. Terbinafine or itraconazole are the safest and most effective antimycotic agents for the treatment of onychomycosis in children. For laser therapy of onychomycosis, only a few st
