Intestinal atresia of co-twin after spontaneous cessation of blood flow through an acardiac twin.

A 33-year-old woman was diagnosed at 15 weeks gestation with a twin pregnancy complicated by an acardiac acephalic foetus. The patient opted for expectant management with close foetal surveillance. Serial ultrasonography showed polyhydramnios at 22 weeks gestation. However, subsequent scans over the next two weeks showed cessation of blood flow in the acardiac foetus, decreasing size of the foetal mass, as well as gradual resolution of the polyhydramnios. Subsequent follow-up was rather uneventful and she underwent an uncomplicated elective caesarean section at 35 weeks, resulting in a healthy

Characteristics and environmental susceptibility of first-pass meconium microbiota in neonates with congenital intestinal atresia.

PURPOSE: Whether congenital gastrointestinal atresia (atresia) specifically affects the meconium microbiota because of an altered intrauterine intestinal environment remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to characterize the meconium microbiota of neonates with congenital anomalies, specifically atresia. METHODS: Meconium samples were collected from healthy term neonates (control), neonates with congenital malformations other than atresia (other anomalies), and those with atresia who were admitted to the growing care unit or obstetrics ward. Alpha-diversity (Shannon index and observed features)

A Rare Case of Meckel-Gruber Syndrome with Congenital Intestinal Atresia and Abdominal Pseudocyst Clinic.

Background: Meckel-Gruber syndrome (MGS) is a rare disease with a fatal, autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. This article mentions the neonatal MGS case followed by intestinal atresia and meconium pseudocyst clinic. Case presentation: Bile-containing-fluid was aspirated from the fetus, which was found to have polyhydramnios, gastric dilatation, lung hypoplasia, and cystic formation with a diameter of 68*62mm in the abdomen at 32 weeks of gestation in the intrauterine period. The cyst recurred after 2 weeks. We operated the patient with the preliminary diagnosis of meconium pseudocyst due

Retrospective study of umbilical cord ulceration related to congenital intestinal atresia: A single-center report.

AIM: Umbilical cord ulceration (UCU) is a disease in which an ulcer forms in the umbilical cord in the pregnant uterus and is accompanied by hemorrhaging from the same site. UCU occurs in fetuses with congenital upper-intestinal atresia (CUIA); however, its onset mechanism remains unclear. Here, we report our investigation of cases of UCU in our hospital. METHODS: Among the 9825 deliveries performed between 2007 and 2016 at this hospital, 20 fetuses were diagnosed with CUIA, 4 (20%) of which had UCU. There was no difference in the backgrounds of the fetuses with UCU (UCU group: 4 fetuses) and

Prenatal Ultrasound Progression and Postnatal Retrospective Analysis of a Case of Small Intestinal Atresia with Volvulus.

Background and Clinical Significance: Fetal jejunoileal atresia is a congenital anomaly of the lower digestive tract. Subsequent small intestinal volvulus, which may occur secondary to intestinal malrotation or atresia, represents a common cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction. The synthesis of intestinal atresia and volvulus is a dynamic, progressive process with distinct imaging features at each stage. Serial fetal ultrasound can detect abnormalities, and imaging changes may evolve from the initial onset of atresia to the development of volvulus. Case Presentation: We report the clinical

Hemosiderin deposition in the lamina propria of the septum: a histological feature of type I intestinal atresia.

BACKGROUND: We investigated and compared the potential histological characteristics of the septum arising from type I intestinal atresia (IA) with those of the normal intestinal wall. METHODS: This retrospective descriptive histological study included neonates with surgically and pathologically confirmed type I intestinal atresia treated between September 2016 and December 2021. Septal tissue and paired adjacent proximal intestinal wall tissue were collected during surgical resection. Serial paraffin sections were examined using hematoxylin and eosin staining, Masson's trichrome staining, and

A rare occurrence of multiple intestinal atresias, with successful one-procedure resection and primary anastomosis.

Intestinal atresia is a common cause of neonatal bowel obstruction. Many theories exist relating to intestinal atresia, though the best explanation is related to vascular events. Duodenal atresia is thought to be due to a developmental anomaly of the intestine. A rare combination of concomitant Type III duodenal atresia, Type III B jejunal atresia, and Type I ileal atresia is presented. The differing pathogenesis of these atresias makes the condition exceptionally rare. This patient was successfully treated, via explorative laparotomy, with resection of the atretic segments and two primary ana

Biliary atresia associated with polysplenia syndrome, dextrocardia, situs inversus totalis and malrotation of intestines.

Biliary atresia (BA) is a rare disease and the end result of a destructive, inflammatory cholangiopathy, leading to fibrosis and biliary cirrhosis. It is classified into syndromic variety with various congenital anomalies and non-syndromic (isolated anomaly). We present here a 1-month-old female child with the syndromic variety of BA associated with polysplenia syndrome, dextrocardia, situs inversus totalis and malrotation of intestines. She developed jaundice in the first week of life. Kasai operation was performed but she developed cholangitis and septicemia 2.5 months after surgery and succ

Exogenous Sonic hedgehog protein does not rescue cultured intestine from atresia formation.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of intestinal atresia formation remains undefined. Atresia in fibroblast growth factor receptor 2IIIb (Fgfr2IIIb(-/-)) mutant mouse embryos is preceded by endodermal apoptosis and involution of the surrounding mesoderm. We have observed that involution of the atretic segment is preceded by the downregulation of Sonic hedgehog (SHH) in the endoderm, which is a critical organizer of the intestinal mesoderm. We hypothesized that supplementation of Fgfr2IIIb(-/-) intestinal tracts with exogenous SHH protein before atresia formation would prevent involution of the mesoderm

Hemidesmosome deficiency of gastro-intestinal mucosa, demonstrated in a child with Herlitz syndrome and pyloric atresia.

In an 11-day-old premature girl with Epidermolysis bullosa atrophicans generalisata gravis Herlitz and pyloric atresia, hypoplasia of hemidesmosomes in the skin, the gastrointestinal mucosa and the atretic pyloric segment was found by electron microscopy. Pyloric atresia is explained by hemidesmosomal defects causing junctional blistering of the mucosa, subsequent peptic digestion and inflammatory scarring reaction.

The Intestinal Flora at Kasai Procedure in Children with Biliary Atresia Appears Not to Affect Postoperative Cholangitis.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence supports long-term oral antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent cholangitis after Kasai procedure. Data regarding perioperative intravenous prophylaxis are lacking. Ascending pathogens from the intestine are made responsible for recurrent cholangitis. Therefore, we analyzed the flora in the upper jejunum during the Kasai procedure and their potential impact on postoperative cholangitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 26 patients, swabs were taken at the bowel prepared for the Roux-en-Y-loop. Our postoperative protocol includes intravenous third-generation cephalosporins for 2 week

Role of intraluminal bowel echogenicity on prenatal ultrasounds to determine the anatomical level of intestinal atresia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between different degrees of bowel intraluminal echogenicity showed by prenatal ultrasounds and the anatomic level of intestinal atresia. METHODS: We report three cases of intestinal atresia at different intestinal levels verified during the neonatal surgery with specific ultrasonographic prenatal features. Intensity of sonolucency was analyzed using the image-processing program ImageJ for quantitative measurements based on the gray-scale intensity values. RESULTS: A total of three cases are reported, a jejunal, an ileal and a colonic atresia. All cases

Intestinal synthesis and secretion of bile salts as an adaptation to developmental biliary atresia in the sea lamprey.

Bile salt synthesis is a specialized liver function in vertebrates. Bile salts play diverse roles in digestion and signaling, and their homeostasis is maintained by controlling input (biosynthesis) and intestinal conservation. Patients with biliary atresia (i.e., obliteration of the biliary tree) suffer liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. In contrast, sea lamprey thrives despite developmental biliary atresia. We discovered that the sea lamprey adapts to biliary atresia through a unique mechanism of de novo synthesis and secretion of bile salts in intestine after developmental biliary atresia, in add

Catheter enterostomy and patch repair of the abdominal wall for gastroschisis with intestinal atresia: report of a case.

A male infant, weighing 2177 g, was born with the entire intestine protruding through a defect on the right side of the navel. Intestinal atresia, approximately 70 cm from the Treitz ligament, was also confirmed. Primary anastomosis and abdominal wall repair were impossible because of the intestinal dilation and thick peel, as well as the small abdominal cavity. Thus, we initially performed catheter enterostomy with a 14-F balloon catheter and patch repair of the abdominal wall, to enable the baby to be fed. Secondary anastomosis and abdominal wall repair was safely performed when the baby was

Neonatal hemochromatosis and Martinez-Frias syndrome of intestinal atresia and diabetes mellitus in a consanguineous newborn.

Neonatal hemochromatosis is a heterogeneous disorder of iron metabolism characterized by hepatic failure and marked iron accumulation in liver and extrahepatic tissues. Autosomal recessive transmission is found in most cases. Neonatal hemochromatosis shares cellular features with the adult disease but is clinically and genetically distinct, the causal gene(s) being presently unknown. We report on a newborn from consanguineous parents who presented with multiple congenital anomalies and neonatal hemochromatosis. The syndrome consisted of intra-uterine growth retardation, intestinal atresia, gal

Umbilical cord ulceration in association with intestinal atresia in a child with deletion 13q and Hirschsprung's disease.

The case is reported of a baby boy with an interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 13 who, in addition to the described associations of Hirschsprung's disease and intestinal atresia, had umbilical cord ulceration resulting in massive intrapartum haemorrhage. This case provides support for the existence of a previously reported association between umbilical cord ulceration and intestinal atresia, and suggests that it is aetiologically heterogeneous.

[Long-term results in intestinal atresias and stenoses distal to the ligament of Treitz (author's transl)].

From 1945 to 1975 61 cases of atresias and stenoses of the small intestine distal to the ligament of Treitz and atresias and stenoses of the colon were treated at the University Children's Hospital Zurich. The long-term results of 51 well documented cases are presented and the influence of improvement of operative techniques the establishment of an intensive care unit and the introduction of long-term parenteral nutrition is analyzed. Cases treated during the earlier period (1945-1965) are compared with those from 1966 to 1975. The overall-all mortality was high. Out of 51 patients there were
