Stevia residue extract increases intestinal uric acid excretion via interactions with intestinal urate transporters in hyperuricemic mice.

Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a metabolic disorder that occurs due to the overproduction or under-excretion of uric acid (UA) and is directly linked to the development of many life-threatening diseases. There is a growing interest among many researchers regarding how to overcome the encumbrance of HUA because conventional drugs are associated with multiple side effects. Thus, the present project has been designed to utilize flavonoids and chlorogenic acid-enriched stevia residue extract (STVRE) to combat HUA. The results show that supplementation with STVRE (200 and 400 mg per kg bw) inhibits the XOD

Laser-assisted intestinal anastomosis.

Laser-assisted tissue fusion has been investigated as a new technology to enhance the healing of soft tissues. Laser fusion of intestinal anastomoses shows promise as a method to obtain primary healing while eliminating a foreign-body reaction associated with the sutures. This paper reviews the experimental data that are available regarding laser-assisted intestinal anastomoses and summarizes our experience using the CO2, Nd:YAG, and argon lasers to form fusions in small bowel.

Glycan-Modified Cellular Nanosponges for Enhanced Treatment of Cholera Toxin-Induced Secretory Diarrhea.

Cholera is a severe infectious disease caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Vibrio cholerae after colonization in the intestinal tract. Cholera toxin (CT), a key exotoxin protein, primarily causes acute secretory diarrhea and life-threatening complications in infected patients. Traditional approaches remain insufficient for effectively treating cholera, underscoring the need for innovative countermeasures to eliminate CT-caused symptoms. Here, we report a glycan-modified cellular nanosponge for the enhanced treatment of CT-induced secretory diarrhea. Specifically, intestinal epithelial cell m

[A method of peritoneostomy for treating diffuse purulent peritonitis].

For improvement of exudate outflow and prevention of the development of abscesses, a modified method of peritoneostomy has been suggested and successfully used in treatment of 59 patients. After elimination of a source of peritonitis and sanitation of the abdominal cavity, the greater omentum is covered with a hydrocellulose film of corresponding sizes, rolled up as a rouleau, and placed in the epigastrium. The intestinal loops are covered with a perforated polyethylene film sutured to the ends of a laparotomy wound.

[Modern therapy of intestinal helminthiasis (author's transl)].

The modern chemotherapy of intestinal worm diseases is essentially based on niclosamide, thiabendazole and mebendazole. Thus an effective therapy with few side effects has become possible for these helminthiases. In infections with Taenia, Ascaris, Trichuris, Ankylostoma, Strongyloides, Trichostrongylus and Oxyuris, as the most frequently imported helminths, an elimination rate of over 90% of the parasites can be attained. Infections with nematode larvae as with Larva migrans and trichinoses are more problematic therapeutically because the anthelmintics are directed principally against the adu

II. RENAL FUNCTION INFLUENCED BY PROTEOSE INTOXICATION.

The injection of the toxic proteose obtained from the contents of the obstructed small intestine causes a definite impairment of the eliminative function of the kidneys as shown by a decreased capacity to excrete urea, sodium chloride, and phenolsulfonephthalein. This involvement of the renal function is similar to that shown by the preceding report (1) to accompany the intoxication of intestinal obstruction. The observed depression of function is readily demonstrable even when large amounts of fluid and urea, dye, or salt are injected directly into the blood stream. There is in all probabilit

Alteration of cholesterol content and oxygen level in intestinal organoids after infection with Staphylococcus aureus.

The pathogenicity elicited by Staphylococcus (S.) aureus, one of the best-studied bacteria, in the intestine is not well understood. Recently, we demonstrated that S. aureus infection induces alterations in membrane composition that are associated with concomitant impairment of intestinal function. Here, we used two organoid models, induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived intestinal organoids and colonic intestinal stem cell-derived intestinal organoids (colonoids), to examine how sterol metabolism and oxygen levels change in response to S. aureus infection. HPLC quantification showed dif

Pharmacological Characterization of Apraglutide, a Novel Long-Acting Peptidic Glucagon-Like Peptide-2 Agonist, for the Treatment of Short Bowel Syndrome.

Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) agonists have therapeutic potential in clinical indications in which the integrity or absorptive function of the intestinal mucosa is compromised, such as in short bowel syndrome (SBS). Native hGLP-2, a 33-amino acid peptide secreted from the small intestine, contributes to nutritional absorption but has a very short half-life because of enzymatic cleavage and renal clearance and thus is of limited therapeutic value. The GLP-2 analog teduglutide (Revestive/Gattex; Shire Inc.) has been approved for use in SBS since 2012 but has a once-daily injection regimen. Pha

Novel therapies and preventative strategies for primary and recurrent Clostridium difficile infections.

Clostridium difficile is the leading infectious cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and colitis. C. difficile infection (CDI) places a heavy burden on the healthcare system, with nearly half a million infections yearly and an approximate 20% recurrence risk after successful initial therapy. The high incidence has driven new research on improved prevention such as the emerging use of probiotics, intestinal microbiome manipulation during antibiotic therapies, vaccinations, and newer antibiotics that reduce the disruption of the intestinal microbiome. While the treatment of acute C. difficile

[Surgical management of abdominal aortic aneurysms with coexistent intestinal disease].

The management of patients suffering from abdominal aortic aneurysms with concomitant intestinal disease is demanding. Surgical procedures have to be evaluated meticulously with regard to morbidity and priority. We retrospectively investigated early and late results of nine patients (eight males, one female) with coincidental aortic and intestinal surgery during the last 9.5 years. The average age was 77 years (range 67-85). One-stage procedures were undertaken twice with implantation of aortic grafts to replace abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). During these emergency procedures, an aortoduode

The Establishment and Function of Schistosomiasis Surveillance System Towards Elimination in The People's Republic of China.

Schistosoma japonicum is the main schistosome species in The People's Republic of China, causing intestinal schistosomiasis, a debilitating disease of public health importance. The People's Republic of China used to be heavily endemic with schistosomiasis, but great progress has been made through the vigorous efforts of the national control programmes in the last six decades. Presently, efforts are geared towards eliminating schistosomiasis from The People's Republic of China by the end of 2025 through effective schistosomiasis surveillance, an important component in the drive towards schistos

Chronic norovirus infection in renal transplant recipients.

Norovirus infection is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis. In immunocompetent subjects, norovirus infection is a self-limiting disease of short duration. The present report provides first evidence that norovirus can cause chronic infection in renal transplant recipients. Two patients showed persisting norovirus excretion for >7 months and 3 months, respectively. The first patient was asymptomatic after an acute episode of gastroenteritis and eliminated the virus spontaneously. The second patient developed severe symptomatic chronic infection with diffuse abdominal discomfort, fever

Increased length of incarcerated small bowel as a risk factor for intestinal necrosis in obturator hernia.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated obturator hernia (OH) is a rare type of pelvic wall hernia. With the increasing adoption of reduction techniques for incarcerated OH, it is crucial to assess the extent of damage to the incarcerated intestine. This study aimed to identify objective risk factors for intestinal necrosis based on computed tomography (CT) findings. METHODS: From October 2004 to June 2013, data from consecutive patients diagnosed with incarcerated OH at Kameda Medical Center were collected. All patients underwent laparotomy and were classified into either the viable group (no incarceration

Comparison of human liver and small intestinal glutathione S-transferase-catalyzed busulfan conjugation in vitro.

The apparent oral clearance of busulfan has been observed to vary as much as 10-fold in the population of children and adults receiving high-dose busulfan. The only identified elimination pathway for busulfan involves glutathione conjugation. The reaction is predominantly catalyzed by glutathione S-transferase (GST) A1-1, which is present in both liver and intestine. The purpose of this study was to compare busulfan Vmax/Km in cytosol prepared from adult human liver and small intestine. Tetrahydrothiophenium ion formation rate per milligram of cytosolic protein was constant along the length (a

[Coeliac disease from pathogenesis to clinical practice: current concepts.].

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease affecting the small intestine in genetically predisposed subjects following the ingestion of gluten. Many advances have been made towards understanding the pathogenic mechanisms that underlie the development of coeliac disease. The interaction between genetic, environmental and immunological factors is the main pathophysiological aspect, but over the last few years growing importance has been given to the role of the intestinal barrier and in particular to the alteration of intestinal microbiota. Clinical manifestations mainly include signs and symptoms

STAT1 signaling shields T cells from NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity.

The JAK-STAT pathway critically regulates T-cell differentiation, and STAT1 is postulated to regulate several immune-mediated diseases by inducing proinflammatory subsets. Here we show that STAT1 enables CD4+ T-cell-mediated intestinal inflammation by protecting them from natural killer (NK) cell-mediated elimination. Stat1-/- T cells fail to expand and establish colitis in lymphopenic mice. This defect is not fully recapitulated by the combinatorial loss of type I and II IFN signaling. Mechanistically, Stat1-/- T cells have reduced expression of Nlrc5 and multiple MHC class I molecules that s
