First Nations and Inuit peoples have tobacco use rates three times that of the Canadian national average. Providing tobacco dependence education (TDE) requires an understanding of the factors surrounding tobacco use that are culturally specific to this population. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new cultural competence component for Canadian First Nations and Inuit peoples in a TDE curriculum at Dalhousie University School of Dental Hygiene, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. In 2011, the TDE curriculum was revised to include a First Nations and Inuit people's cul

BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Disease Group modelled a surprisingly high prevalence of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the Greenlandic population in 2016 of 290 per 100,000, higher than that in Denmark, a high-risk country of MS.
OBJECTIVE: Obtain accurate data on the burden (prevalence and incidence rates) of MS in Greenland, 1973 - 2014, overall and according to ethnicity.
METHODS: Greenlandic prevalence and incidence rates were estimated using validated data from the Danish Multiple Sclerosis Registry (Greenlandic citizens suspected of MS were until 2014 supposed to be transferred to Denmar

A baseline for exposure to organochlorine and metal contaminants has been established for mothers and newborns in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut areas of Arctic Canada. Maternal and umbilical cord blood plasma organochlorine levels are described for Inuit, Dene, Métis, Caucasian and Other non-Aboriginal participants. Overall, 523 women volunteered to participate by giving their written informed consent between May 1994 and June 1999, resulting in the collection of 386 maternal blood samples, 407 cord blood samples and 351 maternal/cord pairs. Nearly half of all the participants regularl

This article presents a PhD protocol for an Indigenous-led qualitative study exploring protective factors and recovery processes among Indigenous Kalaallit Inuit (Greenlandic Inuit) youth in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) following suicide attempts. The majority of the population in Kalaallit Nunaat is Indigenous Kalaallit Inuit. The study is grounded in Kalaallit Inuit values and inspired by selected principles of community-based participatory research. Thirty interviews will be conducted in Kalaallisut (Greenlandic) across five regions through in-person and online modalities, as structured thr

The Inuit (Eskimo) gene pool is in many respects similar to that of East Asian populations. Some polymorphisms imply frequent occurrence of disorders comparatively rare in Western Europe (e.g. lactose and sucrose malabsorptions). Low frequencies of alleles for slow isoniazid acetylation and sparteine/debrisoquine oxidation indicate slow elimination of a multitude of drugs. Autoimmune disorders (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, Graves' disease and psoriasis) are rare, possibly explained by the associations of these disorders with HLA-alleles rare in Inuit (e.g. HL

RATIONALE: Bronchiectasis not related to cystic fibrosis is common in indigenous populations globally, but it has not been studied in Canadian indigenous children.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe bronchiectasis in Canadian Inuit children and examine potentially causal factors.
METHODS: We described the clinical features of bronchiectasis in Canadian Inuit children residing in the Qikiqtani (Baffin) Region, Nunavut, Canada, by performing a retrospective chart review of children from this region. Patients had computed tomography-confirmed bronchiectasis and were diagnose

Food insecurity affects Inuit communities. One solution is to consume locally harvested foods, named country foods. However, some country foods are not eaten as often as before, and pressures including contaminants and environmental changes threaten the health of Arctic fauna, thus its suitability for local consumption. By combining Inuit Knowledge with laboratory data, our study assessed the benefits and risks of walrus consumption by Inuit in Nunavik, Québec, Canada. It aimed to increase understanding of: 1) the hunt of healthy Atlantic walruses (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus); 2) the safe prep

An ophthalmic examination of 87% of the resident population of Nain, Labrador (latitude 56 degrees 33'N) was carried out, and the findings in 330 Inuit, 236 persons of mixed racial ancestry (Inuit-Caucasian) and 80 Caucasians were analysed. Legal blindness was present in 1.2% of the survey population, compared with 1.6% of the study population of the Arctic Ophthalmological Survey of 1970-71. Of the age group 52 to 85 years, 10.8% were legally blind, compared with 0.6% of the same age group surveyed in the Framingham (Massachusetts) Eye Study. The leading causes of unilateral or bilateral blin

INTRODUCTION: The Public Health Agency of Canada adapted a Finnish diabetes screening tool (FINDRISC) to create a tool (CANRISK) tailored to Canada's multi-ethnic population. CANRISK was developed using data collected in seven Canadian provinces. In an effort to extend the applicability of CANRISK to northern territorial populations, we completed a study with the mainly Inuit population in the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut.
METHODS: We obtained CANRISK questionnaires, physical measures and blood samples from participants in five Nunavut communities in Kitikmeot. We used logistic regression to t

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections are thought to be uncommon in North America. Recently, HEV transmission has been reported following the consumption of deer meat. Because deer are closely related to caribou and caribou meat is a staple of the Canadian Inuit and the American Eskimo diet, the present study explored the seroprevalence of HEV infection in an isolated Canadian Inuit community.
METHODS: Stored sera were thawed and tested for immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgM anti-HEV by ELISA, and tested for HEV-RNA by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction.
RESULTS: The study c

PURPOSE: Glaucoma is the second cause, after cataract, of world blindness. Approximately half is thought to be primary angle-closure glaucoma (ACG). This review asks whether ACG can be prevented on a population basis. METHODS AND POPULATIONS: Review of published information from the Inuit of Greenland, Canada and Alaska, and descriptions of recent studies in Asian populations in Mongolia, China and South-East Asia.
RESULTS: The Greenland Inuit have the shallowest anterior chamber depths (ACDs) so far recorded. The proportion of blindness due to ACG was reduced from 64% to 9% over 37 years by

Nasopharyngeal carcinomas of the undifferentiated or lymphoepithelial type are most commonly seen in South East Asians. Identical tumors have also been described at a variety of other sites including lung, skin and salivary gland and have been referred to by a number of names including lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC). LECs of major salivary gland are extremely rare. They are particularly common amongst the Inuit populations of the arctic region including Greenland (Denmark), Canada and Alaska, as well as South East Asians. Within the Inuit group, this tumor represents the majority of all sali

Approximately 10% of all breast and ovarian cancers are dominantly inherited and mutations are mainly found in the BRCA 1 and 2 genes. The penetrance of BRCA1 mutations is reported to be between 68 and 92% and confers a 36-92% life time risk of breast cancer. Most mutations in BRCA1 are uniquely occurring mutations, but founder mutations have been described. In this study we describe a founder mutation with wide spread presence in the Inuit population. We have screened 2,869 persons from Greenland for the presence of a BRCA1 mutation (p.Cys39Gly) only found in the Inuit population. The overall

To identify the times of emergence of the permanent teeth of Canadian Eskimos (Inuit), 368 children and adolescents were examined. The presence or absence of all permanent teeth except the third molars was recorded and these data subjected to probit analysis. Female emergence times were advanced over males. Generally, the Inuit of both sexes showed statistically significant earlier emergence times than Montreal children, except for the incisors. The present results do not support hypotheses indicating that premature extraction of the deciduous teeth advances the emergence of their succedaneous

BACKGROUND: For young Indigenous people, suicide is one of the leading causes of death, and high rates in Arctic areas indicate serious health and societal concerns. More knowledge is needed, as suicidal behaviour predicts later death by suicide. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts and negative life events, including violence, sexual abuse, and parental substance abuse, in Sami and Greenlandic adolescents, within and between groups and gender.
METHOD: Working samples included 442 Sami and 399 Greenlandic Inuit (15-16-year-olds),

This study aims to carry out the first geometric morphometric analysis of the 3D size and shape of the full series of cervical vertebrae delving into variability related to sex and population background. For this reason, we analyzed the cervical vertebrae of both males and females belonging to Europeans, Africans, and Greenland Inuit. We 3D-scanned a total of 219 cervical vertebrae of males and females of three different modern human populations (European, African, and Inuit). A minimum of 72 landmarks and curve semilandmarks were positioned in each of the 3D vertebral models. Landmark configu

A recent study conducted the first genome-wide scan for selection in Inuit from Greenland using single nucleotide polymorphism chip data. Here, we report that selection in the region with the second most extreme signal of positive selection in Greenlandic Inuit favored a deeply divergent haplotype that is closely related to the sequence in the Denisovan genome, and was likely introgressed from an archaic population. The region contains two genes, WARS2 and TBX15, and has previously been associated with adipose tissue differentiation and body-fat distribution in humans. We show that the adaptiv

The history of Greenland is marked by different waves of Paleo-Inuit immigration from North America from 2,500 BC to the 12th century and from the 10th to 15th century, Norse settlers immigrated from Northwest Europe and flourished in Southwest Greenland with the introduction of domestic livestock. The different Inuit and Norse cultures created middens by dumping and accumulating domestic waste; a latent source of microbes, including potential pathogens, that might have been preserved due to the general wet and cold conditions in the region. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether ancien

Indigenous women living with HIV (IWLWH) are compelled to navigate a colonial health care system that fails to acknowledge First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultural practices related to childbirth and infant feeding. Infant feeding for IWLWH presents an even greater challenge because the Canadian infant feeding guidelines for WLWH recommend exclusive formula feeding to reduce the risk of vertical transmission through breast milk. Our study explored the knowledge, experiences, and values of Indigenous mothers living with HIV through an online Sharing Circle, where participants shared personal st
