The use of tetracycline hydrochloride as a rapid fluorescent stain for myelin membranes in vertebrates and invertebrates.

We report here the use of tetracycline as a fast and reliable histological stain of myelinated nerves. These results are significant in that they point to tetracyclines as potentially important probes to study the role of divalent and trivalent cations in myelinated nerves. The usefulness and specificity of tetracycline as a supravital probe for calcium and iron metabolism in myelinated nerves is currently under study.

Exploring the applicability of SYBR stains for whole-mount high-resolution confocal microscopy of chemosymbiotic invertebrates.

Localization of bacterial symbionts within host tissues and determination of their morphology are essential for unraveling the biology of chemosymbiotic marine invertebrates. Confocal microscopy offers the potential to visualize bacterial symbionts in whole-mount preparations of host animals or tissues with minimal sample preparation. Here, we investigated the applicability of SYBR stains for visualizing the distribution of symbionts in the gills of thyasirid bivalves and in the trophosome of the siboglinid Siboglinum fiordicum. We demonstrate that SYBR stains, particularly SYBR Gold and SYBR

Environmental DNA Metabarcoding Reveals Diversity and Spatiotemporal Variations of Benthic Invertebrates in Hun River Basin, China.

Freshwater biodiversity underpins ecosystem functioning and human well-being. As the most diverse taxonomic groups in freshwater ecosystems, benthic invertebrates are widely employed as bioindicators for aquatic monitoring and health assessment. In this study, environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding was used to reveal the diversity and spatiotemporal variations in benthic invertebrates in the Hun River Basin (the middle and upper reaches). Sampling was conducted in spring, summer, and autumn, with sites arranged to cover both anthropogenic activities and watershed environmental conditions. A to

Application of a high-throughput respirometry technique for assessing respiratory metabolism of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates.

Respiratory metabolism is one of the key ecological traits of organisms. As such, it is studied by ecologists from a wide range of disciplines, from macroecological studies to evolutionary biology, with the global changes context making the need for its understanding more pressing. Unfortunately, properly measuring respiration is a time- and cost-intensive endeavor, and gathering large datasets can be prohibitive due to the difficulty of measuring it. Here, we describe a fluorescence-based high-throughput closed-system respirometry technique for terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, able to m

Mercury bioaccumulation and speciation in coastal invertebrates: Implications for trophic magnification in a marine food web.

Studies on mercury bioaccumulation and biomagnification in coastal invertebrates in eastern Canada are limited, but these data are necessary to determine risk of mercury exposure effects in upper trophic level organisms. We quantified methylmercury (MeHg), total mercury (THg), and stable isotopes of δ13C and δ15N in 14 species of invertebrates in the Minas Basin. The overall mean concentration of MeHg (12.78 ± 11.23 ng/g dw) was approximately 10 times below the Canadian guideline for the protection of wildlife consumers like fish and birds of 157.20 ng/g dry weight (dw). Invertebrates at highe

Bioactive compounds from marine invertebrates as potent anticancer drugs: the possible pharmacophores modulating cell death pathways.

Marine invertebrates are extremely diverse, largely productive, untapped oceanic resources with chemically unique bioactive lead compound contributing a wide range of screening for the discovery of anticancer compounds. The lead compounds have unfurled an extensive array of pharmacological properties owing to the presence of polyphenols, alkaloids, terpenoids and other secondary metabolites. The antioxidant, immunomodulatory and anti-tumor activities exhibited, are possibly regulated by the apoptosis induction, scavenging of ROS and modulation of cellular signaling pathways to defy the cellula

Impact of ZnO and ZnS nanoparticles in sewage sludge-amended soil on bacteria, plant and invertebrates.

The effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and zinc sulfide nanoparticles (ZnS NPs) on the toxicity of sewage sludges in sewage sludge-amended soils was investigated with respect to plant- (Lepidium sativum) and soil- (Folsomia candida) species. The toxicity of porewater obtained from the tested soils towards Vibrio fischeri (Microtox®) was also investigated. Two sewage sludges (SSL1 and SSL2) with different organic matter content were amended with nanoparticles. Depending on the type of biotest and the type of sewage sludge, different effects of ZnO or ZnS NPs on the toxicity of sewage

Retention and distribution of methylmercury administered in the food in marine invertebrates: Effect of dietary selenium.

Methylmercury is transported along aquatic food chains from the lower trophic levels and selenium modulates the biokinetics of mercury in organisms in complex ways. We investigated the retention of orally administered methylmercury in various marine invertebrates and the effect of selenium hereon. Shrimps (Palaemon adpersus and P. elegans), blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) and sea stars (Asterias rubens) eliminated methylmercury slowly (t½ = ½ to >1 year) and the copepod (Acartia tonsa) faster (t½ ∼ 12-24 h). Orally administered selenite augmented elimination of met

Characterization of the Mollusc RIG-I/MAVS Pathway Reveals an Archaic Antiviral Signalling Framework in Invertebrates.

Despite the mitochondrial antiviral signalling protein (MAVS)-dependent RIG-I-like receptor (RLR) signalling pathway in the cytosol plays an indispensable role in the antiviral immunity of the host, surprising little is known in invertebrates. Here we characterized the major members of RLR pathway and investigated their signal transduction a Molluscs. We show that genes involved in RLR pathway were significantly induced during virus challenge, including CgRIG-I-1, CgMAVS, CgTRAF6 (TNF receptor-associated factor 6), and CgIRFs (interferon regulatory factors. Similar to human RIG-I, oyster RIG-I

Effects of a reservoir flushing on trace metal partitioning, speciation and benthic invertebrates in the floodplain.

Elimination of sediments from river reservoirs is a common management problem for hydroelectric power plants. Periodical flushing can have negative impacts downstream. This study investigated the impact of a flushing event on the physico-chemical changes in the downstream sections and on the consequences for the benthic macroinvertebrate community. A special emphasis was placed on trace metal fate, partitioning and speciation. The assessment of taxonomic diversity and the frequency of taxa with specific traits was used to estimate the impact on the macroinvertebrate community. Trace metals wer

Factors controlling the bioaccumulation of mercury, methylmercury, arsenic, selenium, and cadmium by freshwater invertebrates and fish.

Concentrations of mercury (Hg), methylmercury (MMHg), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), and cadmium (Cd) were measured in atmospheric deposition, stream water, and biota in two streams in western Maryland. Overall, concentrations were slightly higher in the water of the lower pH Herrington Creek tributary (HRCT). Bioaccumulation factors were also higher for HRCT compared to Blacklick Run (BLK). MMHg concentrations in biota increased with trophic level and essentially all the Hg was as MMHg in predatory insects and insectivorous/carnivorous fish. Thus, the overall trophic status of the organism was

Diseases Caused by Parasites with Invertebrate Hosts in China: Burden and Trends of Leishmaniasis and Schistosomiasis.

Parasitic diseases involving invertebrate hosts, notably leishmaniasis (transmitted by sandflies) and schistosomiasis (transmitted via aquatic snails), remain public health concerns in China. Based on the Global Burden of Disease 2021 data, the age-standardized prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) rates for both diseases declined significantly from 1990 to 2021. Men consistently experienced a higher burden than women. The age distribution of disease burden differed between the two conditions. Projections to 2036 suggest a continued decrease in schistosomiasis burden

Modelling Legionnaires' disease: Lessons learned from invertebrate and vertebrate animal models.

The study of virulence of Legionella pneumophila and its interactions with its hosts has been predominantly conducted in cellulo in the past decades. Although easy to implement and allowing the dissection of molecular pathways underlying host-pathogen interactions, these cellular models fail to provide conditions of the complex environments encountered by the bacteria during the infection of multicellular organisms. To improve our understanding of human infection, several animal models have been developed. This review provides an overview of the invertebrate and vertebrate models that have bee

Interpopulation variation in inbreeding is primarily driven by tolerance of mating with relatives in a spermcasting invertebrate.

The degree to which individuals inbreed is a fundamental aspect of population biology shaped by both passive and active processes. Yet, the relative influences of random and non-random mating on the overall magnitude of inbreeding are not well characterized for many taxa. We quantified variation in inbreeding among qualitatively accessible and isolated populations of a sessile marine invertebrate (the colonial ascidian Lissoclinum verrilli) in which hermaphroditic colonies cast sperm into the water column for subsequent uptake and internal fertilization. We compared estimates of inbreeding to

Algibacter onchidii sp. nov., a symbiotic bacterium isolated from a marine invertebrate.

A novel symbiotic bacterium, designated strain XY-114T, was isolated from the cerata of an Onchidium marine invertebrate species collected in the South China Sea. Strain XY-114T was an aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile and short rod-shaped bacterium (0.5-0.8 µm wide and 1.0-1.5 µm long) without flagellum. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain XY-114T belonged to the genus Algibacter with the highest similarity of 97.2 % to the closest phylogenetic relative Algibacter aestuarii KYW371T. Cells grew at 15-37 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 5.5-9.0 (optimum 7.

Leopold Auerbach's heritage in the field of morphology and embryology with special emphasis on gametogenesis of invertebrates.

Plexus myentericus Auerbachi and Friedreich-Auerbach disease are widely used eponyms that are associated with eminent morphologist Leopold Auerbach (1828-1897), whose life is relatively little known due to limited access to his German-written XIX century biographies and lack of English biographical papers about him in world literature. Hereby we focused on hardly known achievements of Leopold Auerbach in the field of gametogenesis and embryology of invertebrates. Auerbach did not only confirm unicellularity of amoebas, which was previously discovered. He described cleavage of fertilized eggs o

Transcriptome dataset of Babesia bovis life stages within vertebrate and invertebrate hosts.

Babesia bovis is a hemoprotozoan parasite of cattle that has a complex life cycle within vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. In the mammalian host, B. bovis undergoes asexual reproduction while in the tick midgut, gametes are induced, fuse, and form zygotes. The zygote infects tick gut epithelial cells and transform into kinetes that are released into the hemolymph and invade other tick tissues such as the ovaries, resulting in transovarial transmission to tick offspring. To compare gene regulation between different B. bovis life stages, we collected parasites infecting bovine erythrocytes and

Molecular Determinants of West Nile Virus Virulence and Pathogenesis in Vertebrate and Invertebrate Hosts.

West Nile virus (WNV), like the dengue virus (DENV) and yellow fever virus (YFV), are major arboviruses belonging to the Flavivirus genus. WNV is emerging or endemic in many countries around the world, affecting humans and other vertebrates. Since 1999, it has been considered to be a major public and veterinary health problem, causing diverse pathologies, ranging from a mild febrile state to severe neurological damage and death. WNV is transmitted in a bird-mosquito-bird cycle, and can occasionally infect humans and horses, both highly susceptible to the virus but considered dead-end hosts. Ma
