After application of various ionic and non-ionic contrast media in the myocardium and intestine of rats, significant changes of flow conditions in the terminal vascular bed were observed with intravital microscopy: Amidotrizoate causes severe disorder in microcirculation distribution (heterogeneous perfusion, functional shunts), while Ioxaglate, Iopromide, Iohexol, Iotrolan cause significantly less microcirculation reactions.

Mechanisms contributing to the rare but consistent neurotoxicity of contrast media currently in clinical use for the radiological examination of the subarachnoid space remain to be isolated. We assessed, by means of the (14C)-2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) autoradiographic method, the effect of three non-ionic, low-osmolar contrast media, namely metrizamide, iopamidol and iohexol, on the local cerebral glucose utilization in the rat brain after intracisternal application. A significant (-30%) global reduction of the brain's metabolic activity occurred following intracisternal metrizamide injection.

A 33-year-old woman developed persistent postural headache following epidural anesthesia (L2-L3 level). Iohexol myelography (L5-S1 puncture) demonstrated no epidural extravasation of contrast material (Figure A), but subsequent computed tomography (CT) axial images (B, C) revealed leakage of dye through the needle track of the L5-S1 puncture (arrows). No leakage of contrast medium was found at the site of the L2-L3 epidural puncture.

Low birthweight is linked to hypertension, chronic kidney disease and even end-stage renal disease. The indirect sinus lift for maxillary sinus augmentation is a common, less invasive solution for placing dental implants. However, the patency of the membrane not to get perforated during the procedure is questionable. A contrast medium, for example, Iohexol, held in the osteotomy site, can be a great guide to ensure membrane integrity.
