The present study deals with the potential role of T. gondii in inducing an arthritic inflammatory process. Wistar rats were injected subcutaneously (sc) into the right footpad with viable T. gondii trophozoites emulsified in incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA). The control group was injected with IFA. PURPOSE: The authors studied the safety of intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in patients with uveitis.
METHODS: The authors prospectively randomized 26 patients with chronic iridocyclitis (22 patients) or pars planitis (4 patients) to undergo IOL implantation or no IOL implantation at the time of cataract surgery.
RESULTS: There was no statistical difference in visual acuity results at 1 year between the two groups. There was a trend toward better visual acuity in patients with chronic iridocyclitis without IOLs. Cocoon-like dense fibrous membranes enveloped the IOL in two patients.

OBJECTIVE: To study the frequency of autoantibodies to the 45 kDa DEK nuclear antigen, a putative oncoprotein, in a sample of patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), and to make correlations with disease subtype and complications such as iridocyclitis. Class I and Class II HLA associations with reactivity to the antigen were also sought.

A set of 200 patients with early onset pauciarticular juvenile chronic arthritis (EOPA-JCA) from Munich (165) and Prague (35) was investigated for the subtypes of HLA-DRB1*03, *08, *11, *12, *13 and *14. We followed 210 cases of JRA closely for 14 years. Thirty-six patients (17.2%) developed iridocyclitis; it most frequently occurred in young females (0-4 years) with monarticular or pauciarticular form of the disease. In 30% of the patients iridocyclitis was first detected after 16 years of age. Forty-two percent had active iridocyclitis on entry. We have studied the antigen frequencies in a group of adult patients with acute and chronic iridocyclitis and chronic, cyclitis. In patients with iridocyclitis a statistically significant increased incidence of HLA-B27 was noted, even in those patients without joint or systemic disease. Patients with chronic iridocyclitis also were noted to have an increased incidence of B27; however, those patients with chronic cyclitis did not. On the basis of HLA-B27 studies there appears to be a fundamental difference between adult and juvenile iridocyclitis.

BACKGROUND: How HLA-A26 modulates Behçet's disease (BD) ocular lesions such as iridocyclitis and retinochorioiditis has not been scrutinized.

Vitrectomies were carried out in 35 children with traumatic cataracts and complications of surgery for cataracts, caused by injury to the posterior lenticular capsule and incorporation of its fragments to the vitreous. Reported are the results of a primary eye care training programme for community-based leprosy control workers in the Republic of Korea. The 20-hour programme emphasized the detection and management of lagophthalmos (and its complications) and chronic iridocyclitis. Type I pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (PA-JRA) is characterized by a female predominance, chronic iridocyclitis and a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) test. In contrast, patients with type II PA-JRA are usually male, have a negative ANA test, but are HLA-B27 positive. BACKGROUND: Turner's syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality where phenotypic females have either a missing X chromosome or a structural aberration of the X chromosome. Several ocular diseases have been associated with Turner's syndrome in the past, including one case only of proven iridocyclitis.

This study of children with chronic arthritis confirms that patients at greatest risk for chronic iridocyclitis have a young age of onset and positive antinuclear antibodies (ANA). Children who are ANA negative have a low risk of iridocyclitis. When it occurs it is at a significantly older age.
