Ticks and tick-borne diseases on southwestern Indian Ocean islands.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases represent a growing global health concern, affecting both humans and animals, with an increasing number of disease outbreaks reported worldwide. On the southwestern Indian Ocean islands (SWIO)-including the Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, La Réunion, Rodrigues and the Seychelles-the diversity of tick species and the pathogens they transmit remain poorly understood, posing a considerable impediment to improving public and animal health. METHODS: Here, we present the first comprehensive summary of tick species diversity and tick-borne pathogens in the SWIO region

Burden of childhood obesity in Pacific Islands Countries and Territories.

Childhood obesity is a major and escalating health challenge in Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), where prevalence rates among children rank among the highest globally. This first paper in a three-part series synthesises evidence on the prevalence and sociodemographic distribution of overweight and obesity among children aged 2.0-11.9 years across 22 PICTs. Twenty-nine unique studies involving more than 33,000 children were included. Prevalence varied widely, from as low as 3.3 percent in the Marshall Islands to more than 50 percent in Wallis and Futuna and American Samoa, depe

Pb(111) islands adsorbed on epitaxial graphene: a magnetotransport study.

Proximity coupling is an effective approach for introducing properties into graphene that are not inherent to it. In particular, the adsorption of heavy metals can induce spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in graphene. In this study, we investigated the effects of adsorbed Pb(111) islands deposited at room temperature with an average coverage of up to 30 ML on the transport properties of monolayer graphene on SiC(0001) using magnetotransport. This investigation is supported by a structural analysis using scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. The Pb(111) islands act as elect

Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in domestic sheep in the Faroe Islands.

Little has been known about the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii in the remote isolated archipelago of the Faroe Islands. This study was conducted to estimate T. gondii seroprevalence in domestic sheep in the Faroe Islands. We tested samples from 122 sheep slaughtered for human consumption in October 2021 for presence of antibodies against the parasite using a commercial multi-species ELISA. The sheep originated from 14 land lots across the Faroe Islands. Four sheep were seropositive for T. gondii, corresponding to a seroprevalence estimate of 3.3 %. All four seropositive sheep were adult e

Pacific Islands cetaceans: a review of strandings from 2006-2024.

We report significant pathological findings from 272 stranding investigations of 20 cetacean species in the Pacific Islands region between 2006 and 2024. Full or partial necropsies of 209 cases (76.8%) resulted in one or more diagnoses associated with death in 137 cases. Natural disease accounted for 62% of stranded animals; approximately half were in poor body condition due to chronic illness. Morbillivirus and Brucella sp. infections caused mortality in 11 species, including striped dolphins and Longman's beaked whales. Toxoplasmosis, of anthropogenic cause in Hawai'i, led to deaths of 2 spi

Hurricanes threaten species and alter evolutionary trajectories on tropical islands.

Hurricanes are natural phenomena, but anthropogenic climate change will cause hurricanes to be stronger and more frequent in the future. It has long been known that hurricanes impact plants and animals, but only recently has the impact on biodiversity been mapped globally, showing that species at risk of extinction due to hurricanes are largely restricted to tropical islands. Tropical islands harbor many plants and animals found nowhere else, many of which are currently threatened, and tropical islands have already suffered a disproportionate number of species extinctions due to human activity

Turning islands into bridges: Communitybased response after a catastrophic earthquake.

The workforce rallying point model is intended to activate within the first 24 hours after a catastrophic earthquake. Its purpose is to provide employees with access to critical information and early response assignments following a Cascadia subduction zone-type event. The consequences from a catastrophic event could include loss of communication with departmental leadership, as well as loss of safe worksite facilities. A systems failure of this magnitude requires rethinking traditional centralised disaster response models. Building from lessons learned in past catastrophes, the City of Seattl

Emergence of Lyme Disease on Treeless Islands, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Lyme disease is usually associated with forested habitats but has recently emerged on treeless islands in the Western Isles of Scotland. The environmental and human components of Lyme disease risk in open habitats remain unknown. We quantified the environmental hazard and risk factors for human tick bite exposure among treeless islands with low and high Lyme disease incidence in the Western Isles. We found a higher prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato-infected ticks on high-incidence than on low-incidence islands (6.4% vs. 0.7%); we also found that residents of high-incidence islands

Climate change and infectious diseases in Australia's Torres Strait Islands.

OBJECTIVE: This research seeks to identify climate-sensitive infectious diseases of concern with a present and future likelihood of increased occurrence in the geographically vulnerable Torres Strait Islands, Australia. The objective is to contribute evidence to the need for adequate climate change responses. METHODS: Case data of infectious diseases with proven, potential and speculative climate sensitivity were compiled. RESULTS: Five climate-sensitive diseases in the Torres Strait and Cape York region were identified as of concern: tuberculosis, dengue, Ross River virus, melioidosis and n

Haemosporidian parasite community in migrating bobolinks on the Galapagos Islands.

Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) migrate from their breeding grounds in North America to their wintering grounds in South America during the fall each year. A small number of Bobolinks stop temporarily in Galapagos, and potentially carry parasites. On the North American breeding grounds, Bobolinks carry a least two of the four Plasmodium lineages recently detected in resident Galapagos birds. We hypothesized that Bobolinks carried these parasites to Galapagos, where they were bitten by mosquitoes that then transmitted the parasites to resident birds. The haemosporidian parasite community in 4

Haemophilus ducreyi associated with skin ulcers among children, Solomon Islands.

During a survey of yaws prevalence in the Solomon Islands, we collected samples from skin ulcers of 41 children. Using PCR, we identified Haemophilus ducreyi infection in 13 (32%) children. PCR-positive and PCR-negative ulcers were phenotypically indistinguishable. Emergence of H. ducreyi as a cause of nongenital ulcers may affect the World Health Organization's yaws eradication program.

Genome-wide DNA methylation profiling of CpG islands in hypospadias.

PURPOSE: Hypospadias is one of the most frequent genital malformations in the male newborn, and results from abnormal penile and urethral development. The etiology of hypospadias remains largely unknown despite intensive investigations. Fetal androgens have a crucial role in genital differentiation. Recent studies have suggested that molecular mechanisms that underlie the effects of androgens on the fetus may involve disruption of epigenetic programming of gene expression during development. We assessed whether epigenetic modification of DNA methylation is associated with hypospadias in a case

Yaws in Polynesia's Wallis and Futuna Islands: a seroprevalence survey.

We carried out a serological and clinical survey to determine the prevalence and clinical presentation of yaws on two twin islands in Polynesia: Wallis and Futuna. A total of 264 serum samples were tested for specific Treponema pallidum haemagglutinations assay and non-specific rapid plasma reagin: 52 were positive for one or both tests; only one young adult had skin lesion consistent with yaws; and there were no observed cases of secondary or tertiary yaws. Our results contrast with findings in neighbouring islands, such as Vanuatu, where yaws has been reported to resurge. This difference mig

[2007 cholera epidemic in Comoros islands: a step towards endemisation?].

In 2007, a cholera epidemic occurred on two of the three islands of the Comoros archipelago: Grande Comore and Moheli. This study is based on data from the files of the 1571 patients admitted to five cholera treatment centers (CTC). The outbreak lasted for ten months. A dramatic peak was observed in July and August corresponding to the traditional wedding season during which hundreds of guests including returning diaspora gather to celebrate "Grand Marriages". Initial stool cultures identified Vibrio cholerae O1, Ogawa serotype. The in-center fatality rate was 1.85%. Poor socio-economical cond

Hair methylmercury levels of mummies of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.

Ancient human hair specimens can shed light on the extent of pre-historic exposures to methylmercury and provide valuable comparison data with current-day exposures, particularly for Indigenous Peoples who continue to rely upon local traditional food resources. Human hair from ancient Aleutian Island Native remains were tested for total and methylmercury (Hg, MeHg) and were radiocarbon dated. The remains were approximately 500 years old (1450 A.D.). For four adults, the mean and median total hair mercury concentration was 5.8 ppm (SD=0.9). In contrast, MeHg concentrations were lower with a mea
