For the purpose of immunological diagnosis of onchocerciasis, the authors attempted to isolate an antigenic fraction from Ascaris suum which would only detect anti-Onchocerca volvulus antibodies. By use of isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gel rods we were able to detect traces of HbA (approx. 1%) as a sharp and discrete band. By overloading the gel considerable amounts of HbA (slightly contaminated with HbF) could be detected and isolated. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate intrahospital and interhospital clonal dissemination of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae.
SETTING: Eight tertiary-care university hospitals and 16 regional hospitals in Taiwan.
METHODS: Two hundred eleven confirmed ESBL-producing isolates of K. pneumoniae were collected from January 1998 to June 2000. The isolates were characterized by various typing methods, including antibiogram (9 antimicrobial agents), computer-based ribotyping, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and isoelectric focusing of beta-lactamase.

Toxic shock toxin (TST), also known as pyrogenic exotoxin C (Schlievert et al., J. Infect. Dis. 143:509-516, 1981) and staphylococcal enterotoxin F (Bergdoll et al., Lancet i:1017-1021, 1981), was purified from toxic shock strains of Staphylococcus aureus by preparative isoelectric focusing and by chromatofocusing. Alpha-1-antitrypsin phenotypes of umbilical cord serum from 741 Polish newborns were studied by isoelectric focusing. The frequencies of the PI alleles were: PI*M1 = 0.7199, PI*M2 = 0.1613, PI*M3 = 0.0965, PI*S = 0.0094, PI*Z = 0.0067, and PI*Var(F,I,L) = 0.0060. On polyacrylamide slab electrophoresis two ferritin species, termed fast and slow, were present in three control and four iron-loaded human hearts. The ratio of the fast to slow species varied between hearts and correlated with the distribution of isoferritins, which had pI values ranging from 4.8 to 5.6.
