Sodium citrate ingestion and muscle performance in acute hypobaric hypoxia.

Eight subjects were studied on four occasions following ingestion of a 300-ml solution containing either sodium citrate (C, 0.4 g.kg-1 body mass) or placebo (P, sodium chloride 0.045 g.kg-1 body mass), at local barometric pressure (N, PB approximately 740 mmHg, 98.7 kPa) or hypobaric hypoxia (HH, PB = 463 mmHg, 61.7 kPa). At 2 h after ingestion of the solution, the subjects performed prolonged isometric knee-extension at 35% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) measured either in N or HH. Results showed that ingestion of C led to an improvement in muscle endurance (P < 0.01). However, th

Magnetic resonance imaging based muscle strain rate mapping during eccentric contraction to study effects of unloading induced by unilateral limb suspension.

Age- and disuse- related loss of muscle force is disproportionately larger than the loss of muscle mass. Earlier studies reported that comparing concentric and eccentric contractions, there is a significant age-related decrease in force only in concentric contractions. Magnetic Resonance Imaging enables mapping of muscle deformation and has been used to study isometric but not eccentric contractions. We report MRI based strain rate mapping of the medial gastrocnemius in subjects pre- and post-unloading induced by Unilateral Limb Suspension. In contrast to isometric contraction, no difference i

Calcaneal tendon stiffness is not associated with dynamic time-dependent contractile output.

The ability to rapidly generate muscular torque and velocity is important in specialized activities and daily tasks of living. Tendon stiffness is one factor in the neuromuscular system that influences musculoskeletal torque transmission. Previous studies have reported weak-to-moderate correlations between tendon stiffness and rate of torque development (RTD). However, these correlations have been reported only for isometric contractions, which may not be relevant to contractions involving joint rotation (i.e., dynamic). The purpose was to investigate the effect of calcaneal tendon stiffness o

[Mechanomyography - results in a normal population and in patients with thyroid dysfunction (author's transl)].

Isometric contraction of the adductor pollicis by stimulating the ulnar nerve was determined in 20 normal adult subjects. We measured mechanical latency, electro-mechanical latency, contraction time, time to half relaxation and isometric twitch force. Besides that we registered the compound muscle action potential and the nerve conduction velocity. The median nerve was used to elicit the nerve action potential and to determine conduction velocity and relative refractory period. In 6 pat. with hypothyroidism and in 7 pat. with hyperthyroidism the above mentioned parameters were measured. There

Hip Abductor Rate of Torque Development as Opposed to Isometric Strength Predicts Peak Knee Valgus During Landing: Implications for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury.

Peak knee valgus has been shown to predict anterior cruciate ligament injury. The purpose of the current study was to compare peak rate of torque development (RTD) to peak isometric torque as a predictor of peak knee valgus during landing. Twenty-three healthy females participated. Hip abductor muscle performance was quantified using 2 types of isometric contractions: sustained and rapid. Peak isometric torque was calculated from the sustained isometric contraction. Peak RTD was calculated from the rapid isometric contraction (0-50 and 0-200 ms after force initiation). Kinematic data were coll

Relation between protein kinase C and calmodulin systems in cerebrovascular contraction: investigation of the pathogenesis of vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The protein kinase C (PKC) and calmodulin systems each play a role in vascular contraction. However, the correlation of these two systems in producing contraction has been unclear. To clarify the pathophysiology of vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage, the authors demonstrated tonic contraction of the cerebral artery in a study of isometric tension, and investigated the correlation of the PKC and calmodulin systems in producing the contraction. To develop better management for vasospasm, they also examined the effect of calmodulin antagonists on tonic contraction. The development of isometr

The Effect of Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage on Muscle and Cerebral Oxygenation and Performance.

The study aimed to investigate the effects of exercise-induced muscle damage on muscle and cerebral oxygenation. Twelve healthy men performed eccentric exercise on a leg press machine at an intensity corresponding to their concentric one-repetition maximum. Muscle damage indices, muscle and cerebral oxygenation, and vastus lateralis architecture were evaluated at baseline and 48 hours postexercise. At 48 hours postexercise, delayed onset muscle soreness significantly increased (1.0±0.3 to 4.2±2.8; p<0.01), while concentric one-repetition maximum, maximal isometric force, and rate of force deve

Residual force enhancement decreases when scaling from the single muscle fiber to joint level in humans.

BACKGROUND: Residual force enhancement (rFE), defined as increased isometric force following active lengthening compared to a fixed-end isometric contraction at the same muscle length and level of activation, is present across all scales of muscle. While rFE is always present at the cellular level, often rFE "non-responders" are observed during joint-level voluntary contractions. METHODS: We compared rFE between the joint level and single fiber level (vastus lateralis biopsies) in 16 young males. In vivo voluntary knee-extensor rFE was measured by comparing steady-state isometric torque betwe

Attenuated fatigue in slow twitch skeletal muscle during isotonic exercise in rats with chronic heart failure.

During isometric contractions, slow twitch soleus muscles (SOL) from rats with chronic heart failure (chf) are more fatigable than those of sham animals. However, a muscle normally shortens during activity and fatigue development is highly task dependent. Therefore, we examined the development of skeletal muscle fatigue during shortening (isotonic) contractions in chf and sham-operated rats. Six weeks following coronary artery ligation, infarcted animals were classified as failing (chf) if left ventricle end diastolic pressure was >15 mmHg. During isoflurane anaesthesia, SOL with intact blood

[The initial position of the contralateral leg affects the muscular power capability of testing and training on a leg press].

There are numerous studies on the factors influencing the maximum isometric force. These include, among others, the activity of the contralateral extremities in unilateral measurements. With reference to this parameter, there is still disagreement. Some studies suggest that activation of the contralateral antagonist leads to an increase in force production of the tested limb. In contrast, other research groups came to the conclusion that simultaneous contraction of the contralateral agonists have this effect. The aim of this study was to find out how certain starting positions and contraction

Effects of experimental muscle pain on shoulder-abduction force steadiness and muscle activity in healthy subjects.

We previously demonstrated that the steadiness of shoulder abduction is reduced in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS), which might be related to shoulder pain associated with the SIS. The aim of the present study was to examine the acute effects of experimental shoulder muscle pain on shoulder motor function in healthy subjects. The fluctuations in exerted force (force steadiness) and electromyographic (EMG) activity from eight shoulder muscles were determined during sub-maximal isometric and dynamic contractions with the shoulder abductors in nine healthy subjects (27.7 +/-

Valproic acid reduces muscle susceptibility to contraction-induced functional loss but increases weakness in two murine models of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Skeletal muscles in animal models of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are more susceptible to contraction-induced functional loss, which is not related to fatigue. Valproic acid (VPA) reportedly improves serological and histological markers of damage in dystrophin-deficient murine muscle. Here, we tested whether VPA would reduce the susceptibility to contraction-induced functional loss in two murine DMD models. Adult female mdx (mild) and D2-mdx (severe) DMD murine models were administered VPA (240 mg/kg) or saline for 7 days. Some VPA-treated mdx mice also performed voluntary running in a wh

Motor unit firing rates in postpolio and control subjects during submaximal contraction.

Postpolio patients have a deficit in strength recovery after isometric activity. The cause for this is unknown, but may be the result of higher motor unit firing rates during the activity, which leads to excessive fatigue of the motor units. The purpose of this study was to determine whether postpolio subjects recruited motor units at higher firing rates than control subjects. Twelve control and seven postpolio subjects were tested for maximal voluntary contraction of the quadriceps isometrically. Randomly, subjects performed isometric contractions for five 10-s periods freely against gravity
