Investigation of systemic isosporosis outbreaks in an aviary of greenfinch (Carduelis chloris) and goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) and a possible link with local wild sparrows (Passer domesticus).

CASE REPORT: An outbreak of systemic isosporosis caused mortalities in greenfinches (Carduelis chloris) and goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis) kept in an aviary in the western suburbs of Melbourne. The following year, a further outbreak in the same aviary occurred in a different flock of goldfinches. At the time of the second outbreak, dead and sick common sparrows (Passer domesticus) discovered near the aviary were also found to have systemic isosporosis. METHOD: The systemic isosporosis was investigated and described using histopathology, electron microscopy and sequence analysis of the 18s

SYSTEMIC ISOSPORIASIS (ATOXOPLASMOSIS) IN PASSERINE BIRDS AT THE ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF LONDON, LONDON ZOO.

Infection with systemic Isospora species (systemic isosporiasis [SI]) is common in passerine birds and may cause substantial mortality in zoological collections. Ten years of postmortem records of 26 species of captive, nonnative passerine birds maintained at the Zoological Society of London, London Zoo, plus seven free-ranging species found dead within the zoo, were reviewed to assess cause of death and occurrence of SI (presence of merozoites in tissue impression smears and/or polymerase chain reaction [PCR] testing for Isospora DNA). The records of 287 juveniles and adults were reviewed, of

[Light and electron microscope studies on cysts of Sarcocystis fusiformis in the muscles of calves infected experimentally with oocysts and sporocysts of the large form of Isospora bigemina from dogs. 1. The development of cysts and "cyst wall" (author's transl)].

In several experiments young calves were infected with Isospora bigemina (large form) sporocysts excreted by dogs which had been fed with raw beef containing Sarcocystis fusiformis cysts. On the 27th, 34th, 62nd, 76th and 150th day p.i. the calves were killed and the development of S. fusiformis cysts in muscles cells was studied by light and electron microscopy. On the 27th day p.i. in light microscope preparations numerous schizonts, merozoites and endodyogeny-stages were seen in various organs, such as the liver, lung, kidney, heart, small intestine, esophagus, skeletal muscles, diaphragm,

Human isosporiasis in an AIDS patient--report of first case in Malaysia.

An AIDS patient with multiple opportunistic infections (Candida, Pneumocystis carinii and Isospora belli) was identified at the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur. The patient presented with profuse diarrhoea associated with lethargy, anorexia and weight loss. Routine stool examination showed Isospora belli oocysts. The infection responded to treatment with trimethroprim-sulfamethoxazole but relapse occurred 8 weeks later. This represents the first documented case of isosporiasis to occur in an AIDS patient in Malaysia.

Isosporosis and unizoite tissue cysts in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Isospora belli, a coccidian parasite in humans, has been described as causing chronic diarrhea and acalculous cholecystitis in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Diagnosis can be made at the tissue level in the epithelium of the small bowel and by fecal examination. Disseminated extraintestinal forms are uncommon. We studied 118 adult patients with AIDS and chronic diarrhea using stool analysis and endoscopy with duodenal biopsy specimen collection. These samples were processed by routine histology and transmission electron microscopy. Isosporosis was diagnosed in 8 c

Regression models to assess the risk factors of canine gastrointestinal parasitism.

Gastrointestinal parasites, protozoa and helminths, remain a common important finding in dogs presented to veterinary medical practices. Moreover, dogs may play an active role in the transmission of enteric parasites to humans, given their cohabitation, making canine gastrointestinal parasitism an issue of major concern for public health. To get an overview of the current state of canine gastrointestinal parasites' prevalence in Greece, a total of 1036 faecal samples were collected from dogs either presented in veterinary clinics or in animal shelters. Samples were examined by a combined sedim

Case report: Nitazoxanide treatment failure in chronic isosporiasis.

We report a 60-year-old immunocompetent patient with chronic biliary isosporiasis who failed to respond to orally administered cotrimoxazole prophylaxis and orally administered treatment with nitazoxanide, a 5-nitrothiazole benzamide compound. Severe malabsorption was regarded as responsible for the subtherapeutic levels of nitazoxanide in plasma and bile, resulting in treatment failure. Intravenously administered cotrimoxazole stopped the shedding of Isospora belli oocysts in bile within 5 days, excluding initially suspected resistance to cotrimoxazole. Patients with malabsorption and cholang

Prevalence of Intestinal Coccidial Infections among Different Groups of Immunocompromised Patients.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium and Isospora are known as one of the main cause of diarrhea in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised subjects, all over the world. Incidence of enteropathogens such as Cryptosporidium spp. and Isospora belli considerably has increased, since immunodeficiency virus (HIV) rapidly disseminated. In addition, cancer patients are highly susceptible to opportunistic infections. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis and isosporiasis in immunocompromised patients in Tehran. METHODS: This study carried out on patients admitted to Imam Khomeini

Correlates of Co-Infection with Coccidiosis and Avian Malaria in House Finches (Haemorhous mexicanus).

Pathogens have traditionally been studied in isolation within host systems; yet in natural settings they frequently coexist. This raises questions about the dynamics of co-infections and how host life-history traits might predict co-infection versus single infection. To address these questions, we investigated the presence of two parasites, a gut parasite (Isospora coccidians) and a blood parasite (Plasmodium spp.), in House Finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), a common passerine bird in North America. We then correlated these parasitic infections with various health and condition metrics, includin

Intestinal protozoa infections.

This article reviews important intestinal protozoal infections in cats. Among intestinal protozoa, Giardia and coccidia are the most important infections. Giardiasis is a common problem in catteries, especially where young kittens run free on the floor. Overcrowding and high humidity favour the survival and transmission of Giardia. Diagnosis is made by fecal examination by direct or concentration methods. Metronidazole is the drug of choice for treating giardiasis. Among the coccidial parasites, Isospora felis and Cryptosporidium sp. are the common infections. Virtually all cats become infecte
