Surveillance and control of anthrax and rabies in wild herbivores and carnivores in Namibia.

Anthrax has been studied intensively in Etosha National Park, Namibia since 1966; in addition, since 1975, mortality due to rabies and all other causes has been recorded, totalling 6,190 deaths. Standard diagnostic procedures demonstrated that at least 811 deaths (13%) were due to anthrax and 115 deaths (2%) were caused by rabies. Of the total number of deaths due to anthrax, 97% occurred in zebra (Equus burchelli), elephant (Loxodonta africana), wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) and springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) while 96% of rabies deaths occurred in kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), jac

Plague and tularemia surveillance in hormozgan province, Southern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Plague and tularemia are endemic rodent-borne zoonoses in Iran. This study investigated their presence of these diseases in wildlife populations in southern Iran. Sheepdogs were also surveyed as sentinel animals to provide early warning of potential outbreaks. METHODS: In August 2018, sampling involved the capturing rodents and collecting blood from wild carnivores and sheepdogs. Rodent spleen tissues and ectoparasites were analyzed using real-time PCR to detect Yersinia pestis (targeting the yihN, pla, and caf1 genes) and Francisella tularensis (targeting the ISFtu2 and fopA genes

Multiple exostoses and an osteochondroma in a Pliocene canid from Langebaanweg 'E' Quarry (South Africa).

Langebaanweg is a Mio-Pliocene locality located on the West Coast of South Africa. It is renowned for its rich diversity of both terrestrial and marine vertebrate fossils. Several carnivorans have been identified from this site, amongst which is the recently described jackal-like canid, Eucyon khoikhoi. One of the skeletons assigned to E. khoikhoi exhibits anatomical deformities on several bones of the skeleton. Here, we use multiple methodologies (anatomical descriptions, CT scanning and histology) to investigate the bony overgrowths or exostoses evident in the radius, and we compare these fi

First identification of Trichinella britovi in a domestic dog (Canis familiaris) from Algeria.

Trichinellosis is a parasitic disease affecting various mammals (including humans), birds, and reptiles, and is widespread across multiple continents except Antarctica. The disease can be caused by several species of the genus Trichinella and there are documented cases of T. britovi globally. In Algeria, human cases of Trichinella have been reported and a study identifying T. britovi linked the infection to the consumption of jackal meat., with no reports of Trichinella spp. in animals. This preliminary study aimed to investigate the presence of Trichinella spp. infection among carnivorous spe

High overlap of zoonotic helminths between wild mammalian predators and rural dogs - an emerging One Health concern?

The concept of One Health emphasizes the interdependence of human, animal and environmental health and is of growing significance, in part owing to the problems related to emerging infectious diseases of wildlife origin. Wild mammalian predators are a potential risk factor for transmission of zoonotic pathogens to domesticated animals and humans. This is especially relevant in rural areas, where transmission of zoonotic pathogens can occur particularly efficiently when free-ranging dogs are present. The main aim of this study was to determine helminth infections among wild mammalian predators

First detection of Sarcoptes scabiei from domesticated pig (Sus scrofa) and genetic characterization of S. scabiei from pet, farm and wild hosts in Israel.

In this report we describe for the first time the detection of Sarcoptes scabiei type suis mites on domestic pigs in Israel and examine its genetic variation compared with S. sabiei from other hosts. Microscopic examination of skin samples from S. scabiei-infested pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) revealed all developmental stages of S. scabiei. To detect genetic differences between S. scabiei from different hosts, samples obtained from pig, rabbits (Orictolagus cuniculus), fox (Vulpes vulpes), jackal (Canis aureus) and hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor) were compared with GenBank-annotated sequences of

High morphological plasticity and global geographical distribution of the Pacific broad tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus (syn. Diphyllobothrium pacificum): molecular and morphological survey.

The most important causative agent of human diphyllobothriosis in South America, Diphyllobothrium pacificum, is transferred to the original genus Adenocephalus Nybelin, 1931; revised and redescribed on the basis of the evaluation of an extensive material collected mainly from northern fur seal, Callorhinus ursinus, from St. Paul Island, Alaska. Detailed analysis of morphological and morphometrical data shows a high variability in most of the characteristics traditionally used in diagnosis of diphyllobothriid tapeworms. Trichinella infections in different host species of an endemic district of Serbia.

Trichinella infections are endemic in the Balkan region of Europe. Though trichinellosis and agents thereof are serious problems for human health and animal husbandry, only a limited number of Trichinella isolates from Serbia have been identified at the species level so far. The aim of the present study was the surveillance and monitoring of Trichinella in domestic pigs and wild animals from the endemic district of Branicevo. Investigations performed during the 2009-2010 period revealed Trichinella infections in 344 out of 282,960 (0.12%) domestic pigs. Among wildlife, Trichinella infections w

Minimal risk of Rabies lyssavirus spillover from bats in Israel: findings from long-term surveillance.

Rabies, caused by viruses of the genus Lyssavirus (family Rhabdoviridae), remains a persistent public health and veterinary challenge in Israel, a small but strategically positioned country at the crossroads of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Over the past 18 years (2006-2024), more than 670 confirmed rabies cases have been reported in humans, wildlife, farm animals, and stray dogs, with the latest human fatality recorded in November 2024, following a bite from an unvaccinated dog. While domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) and golden jackals (Canis aureus) account for the majority of cases, little is k

Rabies in the African Civet: An Incidental Host for Lyssaviruses?

In South Africa, canid rabies virus (RABV) infection is maintained in domestic and wildlife species. The identification of rabies in African civets raised the question of whether this wildlife carnivore is a potential reservoir host of RABVs of direct and ancestral dog origin (dog-maintained and dog-derived origins) with an independent cycle of transmission. Genetic analyses of African civet nucleoprotein sequences for 23 African civet RABVs and historically published sequences demonstrated that RABVs from African civets have two origins related to dog and mongoose rabies enzootics. The data s

High prevalence of Hepatozoon-infection among shepherd dogs in a region considered to be free of Rhipicephalus sanguineus.

Blood samples and ticks were collected from 100 shepherd dogs, 12 hunting dogs and 14 stray dogs in southern Hungary, in order to screen them for the presence of Hepatozoon spp. by PCR. Out of 126 blood samples, 33 were positive (26%). Significantly more shepherd dogs (31%) were infected, than hunting (8%) and stray dogs (7%). Three genotypes of Hepatozoon canis were identified by sequencing, differing from each other in up to six nucleotides in the amplified portion of their 18S rRNA gene. In Dermacentor marginatus larvae/nymphs and Dermacentor reticulatus nymphs, H. canis was present only if

Serological and molecular survey of Leishmania parasites in apparently healthy dogs in the West Bank, Palestine.

BACKGROUND: Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is caused by Leishmania infantum in all Mediterranean countries. The Leishmania parasite is transmitted by the bite of a corresponding sand fly vector and primarily maintained in nature by wild and domestic reservoirs, including dogs, foxes and jackals. Infected dogs are the primary reservoir host in endemic regions and are the most significant risk disposing humans to infection. The present study aimed at assessing the prevalence of infection with Leishmania and identification of Leishmania infantum in domestic dogs in the West Bank, Palestine.

The rabies situation in the Middle East.

Rabies is a public health problem of significant importance in the majority of Southern and Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries. In some of these countries, there is a considerable death rate due to rabies. Dogs are the main source of human infection, while cats constitute the second most important group of domestic animals followed by cattle, sheep, goats, camels, donkeys and then wild animals. There are around 300 reported human cases in these regions annually, with several hundred thousand post-exposure treatments. Laboratory confirmation of rabies cases is not always perform
