Epidemiological evaluation of jaw cysts according to the new WHO classification: a 30-year retrospective analysis.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the epidemiology of maxillofacial odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts diagnosed for 30 years in a Brazilian population. A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was performed. Biopsy records were obtained from the archives of a Brazilian referral center between 1989 and 2019. Data regarding age, gender, anatomical location, and histopathological diagnosis were collected and categorized. Further, a literature search for similar studies was performed. A total of 6.994 biopsy records were evaluated, but only 367 (5.24%) cases were classified

Volumetric analysis of keratocystic odontogenic tumors and non-neoplastic jaw cysts - Comparison and its clinical relevance.

The keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is capable of causing vast osseous destruction. Histopathological examination is pivotal for diagnosis. The diagnostic process can sometimes be hindered by tissue inflammation of KCOTs with loss of defining criteria, resulting in misdiagnosis as an odontogenic jaw cyst. We discuss the possible merits of volumetric analysis when facing this particular diagnostic dilemma and for pathophysiological characterization of KCOTs. We included 114 patients, of whom 27 were histopathologically diagnosed with a KCOT and 87 with dentigerous (n = 41) and periapical

Immunohistochemical study of jaw cysts: different existence of keratins in odontogenic and non-odontogenic epithelial linings.

Keratins and secretory component (SC) were immunohistochemically examined in fresh tissue samples from 45 odontogenic and 35 non-odontogenic cysts. Lining epithelia of almost all cases contained keratins which reacted with polyclonal antibodies (Dako, Bio-Science), and no difference could be found between the two groups of lesions. By staining with two monoclonal antibodies against keratins, i.e., RGE53 (Bio-Science) and RKSE60 (Bio-Science), it was revealed that the epithelia of non-odontogenic cysts, which were columnar epithelium in most cases, had fully and positively reacted with RGE53, w

Expression of cytokeratins in odontogenic jaw cysts: monoclonal antibodies reveal distinct variation between different cyst types.

Immunostaining with monoclonal antibodies was used to study and compare the cytokeratin content of odontogenic cysts and normal gingival epithelium. Two monoclonal antibodies, PKK2 and KA1, stained the whole epithelium in all cyst samples. In gingiva, PKK2 gave a suprabasal staining and KA1 reacted with all epithelial cell layers. Antibodies PKK1, KM 4.62 and KS 8.12 gave a heterogeneous staining in follicular and radicular cysts. In keratocysts and in gingiva PKK1 and KM 4.62 reacted mainly with basal cells and KS 8.12 gave a suprabasal staining. Antibodies reacting with the simple epithelial

Long-term bone remodeling after definitive decompression for jaw cysts based on a three-dimensional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Decompression is an effective treatment for jaw cysts. Many studies have reported its effectiveness as a preliminary treatment followed by secondary enucleation. This study aimed to explore long-term bone remodeling after definitive decompression for jaw cysts based on a three-dimensional (3D) analysis. METHODS: This was a retrospective study. The clinical and radiological data of patients with jaw cysts who underwent decompression and were followed up for two years or more at Peking Union Medical College Hospital between January 2015 and December 2020 were reviewed. The 3D radiol

Surgical Treatment of Voluminous Jaw Cysts with a Buccal Plate: A Study of 20 Clinical Cases.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to present, with a series of clinical cases, some advantages of a modified surgical technique using fixed bone flaps in an approach to voluminous maxillary or mandibular odontogenic cysts (excluding keratocysts) and highlight the positive impact on the healing of mucus and bone tissues. BACKGROUND: The surgical approach of the enucleation of voluminous maxillary cysts is generally realized with a subtractive osteoplasty. The major problem with this kind of procedure is frequent fibrous healing (or scar formation) of the cavity due to mucosal invagin

Non-neoplastic jaw cysts: a 30-year epidemiological study of 2150 cases in the Italian population.

Non-neoplastic jaw cyst (NJC) is one of the most common lesions in oral cavity, but there are only few detailed and extended epidemiological data based on the 2017 WHO classification. The aim of this study was to perform an epidemiological analysis of all NJCs treated from 1990 to 2019 at the Marche Polytechnic University, and to compare these data with those published in the literature. This retrospective study considered 2060 patients treated from 1990 to 2019. The NJCs were classified according to the 2017 WHO classification, and the main clinicopathological variables were analysed (sex, ag

Determinants of MR relaxation rates in jaw cysts: implications for diagnostic values of the relaxation times.

OBJECTIVES: The MRI signal intensities and the relaxation times (T1 and T2) have already been used for comparisons among various types of cysts. The signal intensities (or T1 and T2) were suggested to be related to cyst content. However, such a relationship between the relaxation rates (1/T1 and 1/T2) and the aspirated content of jaw cysts was not given. Therefore, an investigation on the determinants of the relaxation rates in the jaw cysts may be helpful in elucidating the biological basis for the differences in relaxation rates among the categories of jaw cysts. METHODS: The aspirated cont

Jaw cyst-Basal cell nevus-Bifid rib syndrome: a case report.

Jaw cyst-Basal cell nevus-Bifid rib syndrome or Gorlin-Goltz syndrome involves multiple organ system. The most common findings include multiple odontogenic keratocysts in the jaws and basal cell nevus on the skin that have an early age onset. These multiple odontogenic keratocysts warrant aggressive treatment at the earliest because of the damage and possible complications associated with them. Recurrence in these lesions is the most characteristic feature that has to be taken in consideration while explaining the prognosis to the patient. A case report of a child affected with Gorlin-Goltz sy

Follicular cyst of the jaw developing into a keratocyst in a patient with unrecognized Gorlin-Goltz syndrome.

Gorlin-Goltz (GG) syndrome is an inherited autosomal dominant condition. Its diagnosis may be clinically confirmed by checking either major or minor signs that define the diagnostic criteria. It may occur that, although GG syndrome is a well-known condition, only the specific symptom could be observed by different specialists. Therefore, the patient cannot be placed into an always complex clinical panel. We introduce an example in this report. Throughout a 20-year clinical history characterized by the lack of proper diagnosis and missed follow-up operations, a patient with GG syndrome underwen
