Genotype-Phenotype Correlations in the Hyperparathyroidism-Jaw Tumor Syndrome.

Establishing genotype-phenotype correlations in disorders of hereditary endocrine neoplasia is important for clinical screening, genetic counseling, prognostication, surveillance, and surgical strategy, and may also provide clues about disease pathogenesis. Important genotype-phenotype correlations are recognized, for example, in pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma and multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A. The presence of such correlations has been less clear in other familial endocrine disorders associated with primary hyperparathyroidism including multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, and the hype

The Unforeseen Diagnosis: Hyperparathyroidism-Jaw Tumour Syndrome Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Hypercalcaemia and its systemic sequelae are a relatively common finding amongst patients in the field of endocrinology. Primary hyperparathyroidism, a frequent cause of hypercalcaemia, is often seen among middle-aged female patients, typically resulting from an underlying single-gland adenoma. Although patients may present with symptoms (nephrolithiasis, musculoskeletal discomfort, dehydration, or mood disturbance, to name a few), hypercalcaemia is rather frequently identified incidentally. In younger patients, a familial form of primary hyperparathyroidism must be considered, with a positive

Long-term success of dental implant-supported dentures in postirradiated patients treated for neoplasms of the maxillofacial skeleton: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: The reconstruction of oral function in irradiated patients with craniofacial tumors is a significant challenge. The aim of this study was to detect long-term success of dental implant-supported dentures in postirradiated patients treated for neoplasms of the maxillofacial skeleton. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2004 to 2011, 36 irradiated patients underwent oral function reconstruction using implant-supported prostheses. Bone augmentation was completed using vascularized bone grafts in 22 patients. Fourteen patients were treated by hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO). A total of 198 den

A Rare Case of Central Odontogenic Fibroma of the Mandible.

The benign tumor central odontogenic fibroma (COF) accounts for less than 1% of all the existing odontogenic tumors. The mandibular or maxillary cortical plate is seen to show asymptotic diversification. It has been characterized as a benign jaw neoplasm. Radiographically, it primarily manifests as a multilocular radiolucency. Histologically, it comprises fibroblasts and mature collagen fibers. The popular choice for the management of COFs is enucleation, followed by the extraction of associated teeth. COFs have maintained a track record of showing rare chances of recurrence following surgery.

Ossifying Fibroma of Non-odontogenic Origin: A Fibro-osseous Lesion in the Craniofacial Skeleton to be (Re-)considered.

In the cranio-facial skeleton, a heterogeneous group of well characterized fibro-osseous lesions can be distinguished. Whereas fibrous dysplasia can affect any skeletal bone, ossifying fibroma and cemento-osseous dysplasia exclusively develop in the cranio-facial region, with most subtypes restricted to the tooth bearing areas of the jaws. Herein we present a series of 20 fibro-osseous lesions that developed mostly in the frontal bone and in the mandible, presenting as expansile intramedullary tumors with a unique histologic appearance and an indolent clinical course. We provide evidence that

Ameloblastoma of the anterior mandible.

Ameloblastoma or adamantinoma is the rarest of the three forms of tumor of the odontogenic type. They are benign, locally aggressive neoplasms arising from ameloblasts, which typically occur at the angle of the mandible, and are often associated with an un-erupted tooth and must, therefore, be differentiated from a dentigerous cyst which will be centered on the crown. When in the maxilla (less common), they are located in the premolar region, and can extend up in the maxillary sinus. Ameloblastoma is reported to constitute about 1-3% of tumors and cysts of the jaws. The tumor is by far more co

Oral cavity and extra-oral plasmablastic lymphomas in AIDS patients: report of five cases and review of the literature.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a distinct disease entity of the diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, which often occurs in HIV-positive patients. The immunophenotype of this lymphoid neoplasm is characterized by the presence of plasma cell-associated markers VS38c and CD138 antigens and the absence of B-cell markers such as CD20 and CD45. The most frequent site of involvement is the oral cavity and the jaw, while several reports describe the development of PBL in extra-oral sites including the lymph nodes, the anal canal, the soft tissue, the skin and the gastrointestinal tract as less frequent. Ameloblastic carcinoma of the mandible: A case report.

Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) is a rare, primary epithelial odontogenic malignant neoplasm. It is the malignant counterpart of ameloblastoma. It comprises 1% of all cysts and tumours occurring in the jaws, arising from tissues associated with odontogenic epithelium. The objective of the present study was to describe a clinical case of a 63-year-old male with an enlargement in the mandible on the left side. Panoramic radiography revealed a radiolucent area with poorly defined borders, and an incisional biopsy was performed for the histopathological study using immunomarkers such as SOX2 and Ki-67

Unicystic ameloblastoma - A case series.

Ameloblastoma is a benign, locally aggressive neoplasm that constitutes about 1-3% of the tumors of the jaw. Wide surgical excision with adequate safe margin is the most common treatment of choice. The study aimed to manage cases with unicystic ameloblastoma while preserving the continuity of the mandible (without resection). This article presents a series of cases ranging from 18 to 40 years old patients of both sexes with unicystic ameloblastoma, especially in the mandible showing more male predilection than female. All the cases presented in this article were treated by enucleation and cure

Sequential Removal of a Large Odontoma in the Angle of the Mandible.

Odontomas are the commonly occurring benign tumors of the jaw, which are odontogenic in origin. Lesion originates as the dental components are laid down in a disorganized manner, due to failure of normal morphodifferentiation. They are considered as hamartomatous developmental malformations rather than a true neoplasm. Mostly, these asymptomatic lesions are discovered as an incidental finding. Large odontomas may give rise to local disturbances, such as eruption delay of permanent teeth, asymmetric tooth eruption, malpositioning, displacement, resorption, or occasional devitalization of adjace

Central odontogenic fibroma of the maxilla.

Central odontogenic fibroma (COF) is an uncommon tumor that accounts for 0.1% of all odontogenic tumors; it has been defined as a benign neoplasm of the jaw. Clinically, the lesion grows slowly and leads to cortical expansion. Radiologically, the most common finding is multilocular radiolucency. The lesions are associated with the crown of an unerupted molar, premolar, or incisor tooth and in some cases, with root resorption or displacement. Histologically, the lesion is characterized by mature collagen fibers and numerous fibroblasts. COF responds well to surgical enucleation with no tendency

Central cavernous hemangioma of mandible: Case report and review of literature.

Intraosseous hemangiomas are one of the rarest lesion of jaw bones (0.5-1%) occurring most commonly in vertebral column, skull bone, and rarely in mandible. Mainly occurs in the second decade of life with female: male predilection (2:1). Origin of hemangiomas is still debatable. World Health Organization considers it as a true benign neoplasm of vascular origin, and many authors believe it to be a hamartoma. It is very difficult to diagnose due to variable clinical and radiological features. A biopsy is not done on a routine basis due to a higher risk of hemorrhage. Management is very difficul

Clear cell calcifying epithelial odontogenic (Pindborg) tumor involving the maxillary sinus: A case report and review of literature.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare benign odontogenic neoplasm of the jaws, accounting for less than 3% of all odontogenic tumors. It rarely extends into the maxillary sinus. Till date, six cases involving maxillary sinus have been reported. In this paper, we report the seventh case of a 52-year-old male with CEOT in maxilla extending from distal surface of the right maxillary canine to retromolar area and involving maxillary sinus with no association with impacted teeth. The diagnosis was confirmed by aspiration cytology and histologically, the tumor was composed of shee

Childhood craniofacial Burkitt's lymphoma presenting as maxillary swelling: report of a case and review of literature.

Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is an undifferentiated malignant lymphoma comprising of uniformly primitive lymphoreticular cells. The tumor was seen originally in patients in Africa. African type BL usually occurs in the jaws of young children. In American cases, abdominal involvement predominates. Strong evidence implicats Epstein-Barr virus in the development of BL. BL is found most commonly in childhood, with a peak incidence in African cases at 5 to 8 years old and in American cases at 10 to 12 years old. The disease shows a preference for males in a 2:1 to 4:1 ratio. BL is the most rapidly growi

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of the epididymis in infancy: case report and review of the literature.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign tumor that usually involves the upper or lower jaw, but it may also arise in other sites. We describe a case of MNTI located in the left epididymis of a 6-month-old boy. Left orchiectomy was performed. Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies revealed two types of cells: small, poorly differentiated cells that were positive for neuron-specific enolase protein and vimentin, and larger epithelial cells that were positive for melanoma antigen (HMB45) and frequently contained large and elongated melanosomes, similar to thos

Embryogenesis of the gingival cyst.

The embryogenesis of gingival cysts derived from the dental lamina was studied histologically in paraffin prepared sections of 10 pairs of human fetal jaws and in individual celloidin sections of human fetal skulls. Cystic degeneration in the dental lamina was noted as early as 10 weeks in utero prior to the separation of the developing tooth bud. Rapid proliferation and growth of such cysts was seen in 15-20 week old embryos during the morphodifferentiation stage of tooth development after fragmentation of the lamina had occurred. Islands, strands and nests of dental lamina epithelium were di

Radiolucent Lesions of the Jaws: An Attempted Demonstration of the Use of Co-Word Analysis to List Main Similar Pathologies.

(1) Background: Many radiolucent jaw lesions exist, and they often show a radiographic resemblance, rendering diagnosis a challenging act. Closely related lesions should be frequently mentioned together in the academic literature, which might be helpful for junior practitioners in determining their differential diagnosis. The usefulness of bibliometric analysis in this respect has yet to be demonstrated. (2) Methods: This study evaluated academic publications on radiolucent jaw lesions, as indexed by the Web of Science Core Collection database. The mentions of radiolucent jaw lesions were extr

Cystic lesions of the mandible and maxilla--radiological evaluation and differentiation.

Cystic lesions of the mandible and maxilla are easily recognizable with various imaging modalities: different conventional X-ray films, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In this article, the author defines and classifies the most-encountered kinds of odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts and presents in each case the various parameters that should be analyzed in order to reach a radiological diagnosis: location of the lesion within the mandible, its relationship to adjacent structures, its shape, etc. Nevertheless, there remain cystic lesions that cannot be differentiated from
